I loved Slay Alive for its unique look and easy to use navigation. The new one looks just like Buffy Forums, which I couldn't deal with. I might be the sole voice but please, please reconsider. I've been posting here for years, and all that history is gone for something that looks like and operates like a forum of lesser quality. I don't mean to get down on you Phil, because I'm sure you must've worked hard... but the old version of Slay Alive was utterly unique. Please, please, please reconsider this.

It is already done... Paid for, and everything. I like the new site and I think it looks great. You have to give it a chance Pat. CBG isn't done with all the skins and stuff he has planned. Wait two months and if you still can't stand the new site. Then I bid you fairwell, though I have to say... If you are leaving slayalive just because of the way it looks? Then maybe you arn't as dedicated and good member as I thought you were.

I'm not dedicated to Slay Alive, I'm dedicated to Buffy and Joss's work. Also, I'm dedicated to the conversations I had here for years, all of which are not a part of the new site. It's not only the way it looks, though aesthetics are really important to me when choosing a forum to frequent. It's the fact that this is Slay Alive. Slay Alive is what the users contributed over the years. I love Phil, but I just don't understand the need for a blank slate. If it ain't broke, well... you know the rest.
As you can see, the site is not looking so hot. We've had issues like this a few times in the past as well.
Here's the thing: the software and service we are using is a free forum provided by Proboards. It's run by ads, and I basically have no control over that, nor do I have ownership of the forum. It's still owned by Proboards and I do not have access to the site's back-up. The back-up is the information data for this place, i.e - membership accounts, the posts, everything you see. All I own is the imagery I made for SlayAlive. If something were to happen @ Proboards, this forum could easily disappear. Because there is no back-up, and I cannot have one made. They don't accommodate that.
Second: I disliked the long URL, so a couple years ago I purchased web-hosting from Yahoo, to simplify it into www.slayalive.com and host our images and files. But it's conflicted with Proboards often, when they make changes on their end, it doesn't cross over to my purchased plan with Yahoo. It's all confusing. Which is what has happened now. Our emails and down yet again, and so are the image files hosted by Yahoo.
Phil gave reasons why in the very beginning of this thread. This site will still be Archived... You will still be able to see the previous conversations. As far as not being dedicated to SlayAlive, fine... no skin of my nose... If you don't follow us to the new site, I don't really have a problem with that. I have had maybe three conversations with you. But Phil has put alot of work into the new site, and he is still working. Why don't you respect that and give it a chance, instead of taking one look at the not-finished product and making a snap judgment.

No need to get at Pat, he is allowed to speak his opinion.
I'm sorry you don't like the set up right now. This coming from one of our longstanding members makes me sad. But, there is a lot that has gone into this decision. I really need to be the owner of my site, and it's database. Which was not possible with Proboards. They wouldn't work with me, and I couldn't even BUY the database! They don't do it. Even for money! This means they have control over our content, and control of me. We could be deleted in an instant for breach of terms and other stupid things.
It made me really discouraged from SA for almost this whole year. I mean, you must have noticed a decline in my presence here. Server crashes, not updating the news header or layout on time. I stopped caring. I was -thisclose- to giving up the administration to Emmie and the mods and leaving because I felt like I could not continue to grow the site knowing in the back of my mind the truth. The truth that this site really isn't mine, nor is it any of yours because Proboards "owns" the data. They profit from having their ads plastered all over my creation and I can't even have my users and data - DATA THAT WE GENERATED!
So, I decided to just move. And that's what has happened now. It -will- be for the best. Give it some time. It's been two days. Content on the new site is already generating, and it will only continue. Pat, did you know you have the option of a blog there? And CMS publishing on the front page? Your reviews are front page material and I had planned on auto-publishing them there when you did them. (Same for Wenxina and Emmie, etc.)
The new site is nothing like BuffyForums! (No shade thrown at them ) But, it's not. They don't have vB Publishing Suite. Neither does Buffy-Boards or ANY other Buffy site. Just SlayAlive. So we are still unique! And unless aforementioned sites spend a couple hundred on this software - they'll never get it. I spent all this green so we could have great features at our fingertips. It's there, it just has to be utilized now.
As for the "look" of the site, you know that it's always going to be an evolution. This forum has gone through 50 different layouts. 50. Once I get the hang of editing vBulletin it'll look great! I honestly like the clean look it has now.

Thanks Phil. Gotta love logic.

Makes sense to me. I'm still not sold on the new look, but I at least understand what went into the decision.

Sounds Wolfram & Harty.

I appreciate it. The look of the blog does confuse me a bit, so I kind of breezed past it. I'll try to throw myself in and see what happens.

I get the use of a clean look, but for me the layout is a bit confusing. There's a lot of text going on, where the old format was a mixture of texts and pictures that was easy to navigate. Just my two cents.
Thanks for reaching out though, Phil. I appreciate it. I have indeed been a member here for a long time, and I'll try the new forum and see if it can possibly grow on me.

It's gonna be an adjustment, Pat. I admit that I was hesitant at first, too, but I think it'll be cool. We just gotta dive in and have fun with it.
As for losing old conversations, yeah the history of SA is something I'll miss. But it's on Archive. Basically, I look at it like Dead Threads from a few years ago. We get to start fresh.
I've been thinking for all the comics threads that I might do a reread and post new reviews there. New content, new perspective after so much time has gone by. That's a good thing.

Would it be possible to put a link, maybe at the top of each forum on the new site, pointing to the old archived forum on the old site? That would make it a lot easier to refer to the old conversations, and even copy-and-paste a quote to reply to something on the old site.
I'm gonna get depressed looking at all those empty forums for the old season 8 arcs where the conversation is basically finished. It will be like looking at the empty corner in January after you've taken the Christmas tree down.
