BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #26

Written by Jane Espenson, pencils by Georges Jeanty, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, covers by Jeanty and Jo Chen.

Team Buffy has become all about sneaky in a world where Slayers are now feared and hated, and vampires would rank at the top of a popularity poll. All hands are on deck as Scotland's brand-newest Slayer headquarters comes under attack; but, when things get more than a little fried, Buffy has to punt. There are yaks. Presenting Buffy on the defensive in "Retreat."

40 pages, $2.99, in stores on July 1

Thanks to our on-going Q&A with Dark Horse Editor Scott Allie, we know that Issue 26 is titled Retreat.

This is the first of the much anticipated Oz arc! Here is what else Mr. Allie has to say about this arc:

Oh, man, the #26-30 arc is COMPLICATED. I think when you see Jane's cover you'll freak out. Note that it's the first arc to run a full five issues on one storyline. Right now, the way Jane's dived into it—and the first script is complete, and Georges is starting on it now—I feel like every question I've had will be answered, no stone unturned, every iteration of these characters' problems explored. So I think Jane will find the time to address the tension of having Willow, Kennedy, and Oz in the same place. It's not a major point of the plot, some kind of triangle between them, but it will be an element.

I await the cover(s) with baited breath, and they will be added as soon as they are released!

This arc sounds potentially staggering. The Buffyverse is best when it's complicated. Other than finally having Oz return and the situations that will bring with Willow & Kennedy, it will be interesting to have a five issue arc and see how the story progresses with an additional issue. I felt the 'Time of Your Life' arc could have benefited from an extra issue, while it was good, it did feel a little compressed.

The title is great and I'm anticipating the cover by Jo Chen. I'll be tough to top the five covers for 'Predators and Prey'!

Predators and prey had some great covers =]
However, a five issue oz arc makes me think this is probably going to be my favourite arc by far. He was one of my favourite characters on the show and i just hope he translates well to comics

The title plus what Scott said make me think that Willow may go back with Oz, even briefly... I'm curious !

Retreat, eh? That sounds... excellent. I'm curious to what the entire arc will be called, but I gotta say I'm glad with this title. It's short and poignant, just the way I like 'em.

I wonder to what the actual 'retreating' bit will refer to. I don't expect it to Willow and Oz getting back together like ligeia suggested (hey, Willow's gay now, so I don't see that happening anytime soon), though. Joss mentioned something about the whole world of demons and vampires and magic starting to boil over -- maybe it'll have to do something with that? Like, they (the Slayers) are going to have to retreat because of all the anti-Slayer stuff going on after being 'outed' to the whole world and being seen as nazis and everyone hating them?

And it's fricking awesomesause that Georges will be doing the pencils. I think he'll draw a really good Oz, and he did mention he thought he was good at drawing him himself as well. I want to see the coverrrrrrs. Well, it'll be like, a month from now 'til we get to see them, right? Right? How am I ever going to survive this month?

I promised myself I wouldn't check anything spoilery anymore from this point on, specifially the Q&A's with Scott Allie, but I'm glad I did this time! Retreat, yaaaaaay!

I think that would be great if Willow went back to Oz for that arc... maybe get intimate with him..... and then go back to being gay.

Because, oh yea, that would make SO much sense....in, you know, that whole "no, not even a little" kind of way.

Ok I'm one of the few that think that Willow's bisexual..but leaning toward the gay side. I'm open to her trying different things and doing what she wants to do. If she wants to get back together with Oz briefly then I think that's cool. If she wants to have sex with Kennedy, then I think that's hot.

Whatever floats her boat is what floats mine.

BTW. Buffyfest blog (who's at Comic Con) reported that, due to the new ToTV, there will be no new S8 issue in June - which means a one month delay for the Oz arc.

Well, assuming that S8 is keeping to its intended schedule, this isn't surprising, since according to Scott Allie, 2009 will see #21 through #31. That's 11 issues... meaning that there would be a skipped month. But at least we now know where the delay will be. And thankfully, it won't break up an arc again. :)

Yep :)
Sad about the month delay, but end the end, it'll be worth it.
And this means I need to buy TALES OF THE VAMPIRES.

Retreating could be a literal term for the Slayer Squads retreating, what with their new found unpopularity with the government, and the sudden popularity with vampires.

How many times must tbhis be stated!? Joss himself said that he views sexuality as more fluid than anything else. To him, people can share affection regardless of their gender or orientation.

Willow clearly was in love with Oz, thats true. She even hinted toward the possible reuniting of them in Season 4.

I think retreat means many things, one of which will be Willow going back to Oz.

If she didn't take back Oz then, why would she now?

I agree that it's doubtful that Willow will go back with Oz, but not because I don't think she's capable of it because of his gender, but because she's happy with Kennedy.

I think the title "Retreat" is far more ominous and far more related to the overall plot than a Willow/Oz/Kennedy triangle which Allie said is only an element of this issues, and really doesn't sound like the focus. My best guess is that the werewolf community and the slayers are retreating from Twilight and his agenda, as the world hates slayers even more and Twilight manoeuvres all his little chess pieces. I really don’t think it has anything to do with Willow taking Oz back.. It hardly seems like it’ll be a main focus of this arc. And given how it’s gearing up for the climax of season eight, I really don’t think it should be? Why on earth would a Willow/Kennedy/Oz love triangle take precedent over the Buffy/Twilight arc? It's played no part at all in the main themes and arcs of season eight? It'll only be incorporated in this arc because it makes sense for there to be- given Willow's past with Oz, Oz's feelings for Willow, Kennedy's feelings for Willow, Willow's feelings for both Oz and Kennedy, and Kennedy's well known behaviour to become overly protective of Willow when she thinks Willow's too close to someone else (Time of Your Life being a great example of this.)

Of course Willow won't be going back together with Oz and of course she's bisexual no matter what some of us may want to believe.

I highly agree. I myself, however, think that Twilight will start rounding up any known allies of the slayer - and enter oz - or something, which eventually leads to the betrayal.

I'm curious to see the title of the entire arc, mostly.

And also, doesn't Seth Green read the comics? So he should be excited to see himself drawn into the book.
