As you can see, the site is not looking so hot. We've had issues like this a few times in the past as well.

Here's the thing: the software and service we are using is a free forum provided by Proboards. It's run by ads, and I basically have no control over that, nor do I have ownership of the forum. It's still owned by Proboards and I do not have access to the site's back-up. The back-up is the information data for this place, i.e - membership accounts, the posts, everything you see. All I own is the imagery I made for SlayAlive. If something were to happen @ Proboards, this forum could easily disappear. Because there is no back-up, and I cannot have one made. They don't accommodate that.

Second: I disliked the long URL, so a couple years ago I purchased web-hosting from Yahoo, to simplify it into www.slayalive.com and host our images and files. But it's conflicted with Proboards often, when they make changes on their end, it doesn't cross over to my purchased plan with Yahoo. It's all confusing. Which is what has happened now. Our emails and down yet again, and so are the image files hosted by Yahoo.

So here is what I have been planning, for about a year...

This forum is going to close. This forum, powered by Proboards. It will be locked, and used as an archived board. Nothing will go away, nothing will be deleted! Simply, registration will close and log-ins will be turned off. So you'll only be able to view, not post.

Before you freak out, keep reading! SlayAlive isn't going anywhere! I am purchasing a license for vBulletin, the most powerful forum software on the planet, and will be creating a new SlayAlive, better than what we are now. The cons of this are pretty big: everyone will need to cross over to the new forum, and register. There will be no threads. It will be a blank slate, a new beginning! Everyone will be able to contribute, and help me build the new forum from the ground up. And it will not be that difficult, I have a few things planned to get us jump-started with posting.

So yes, we will be starting fresh, but here are the exciting things that will come with this new beginning:

  • Every member will have a blog space, the blog feature of vB allows EVERY member to have their own member page as well as a blog. All of which is on the forum.
  • Buddy Lists, and social networking functions.
  • Photo Albums
  • Social Groups (ie Spuffies, Bangels, etc)
  • Event Management
  • Article posting
  • Single member log-in for Blog, Forum, Chatroom, articles etc.
  • Connecting via facebook
  • Meta keywords and a tag cloud for popular topics
  • Better security
  • I will own the site, as opposed to how Proboards owns this forum now
  • Integrated Chat
  • Mobile version of forum
  • Possibly write an App for iTunes!
  • Instant Messaging, as well as PM, and email
  • Larger avatars
  • More options for layouts and themes


And much more!

This change will be gradual, not abrupt. I want to make sure the change over is done with ease, and that everyone understands what is going on. Nothing is going away, we just will post someplace new instead!

This change will not start for another month or so, but I think it's important to let everyone know well in advance.

I like this idea. In the move i think we should also weed through our membership and take the people that haven't been on in a year or so off.

Actually that won't even be necessary. People who do not register with the new SlayAlive, simply won't have a membership.

Ooh, sounds very interesting. I feel excited about this, the new features sound very awesome. But, I like my high post count and karma. It was quite hard to achieve that much for me. But that said, I'm looking forward to this, so I'm not that much worried about it. Exciting!! :)
