It would be weird to make this character that we've known for all of one issue (the baby) suddenly become this semblance of great importance. That would be alot of biuld up just to introduce the prince IMO. But I guess Conner in Angel became important overnight so it could happen..

I saw it as a 'grass greener on the other side' way. Imagine Willow and magic as a woman in her mid twenties still drinking and partying, then suddenly she runs into her old love and he has settled down and has a family and is clearly happy, clearly grown up, even though you are happy, you may be jealous of the 'other life' which your ex love has gone and achieved.

By the way, re reading retreat part 2 again. All the scenes of Giles with the baby, what if the brutal heart breaking conclusion to the retreat ends with Giles giving the baby to twilight or something along the lines of when Wesley kidnapped connor, thinking he was doing the right thing.....

Ok, so just ex is settled kind of way. I don't know, she just seemed more distraught than, for instance, I would be in that situation. Maybe it will have more significance in the following issues. I'll keep my eye on it :D

Why would Twilight want the baby? lol. I have no doubt that Giles may be the betrayer, but I don't that would qualify as betraying Buffy herself, leading to the so-called 'betrayal room'.

We've seen Willow's future and... it aint tea and kidlings people!

We just don't know how much 'contemporary Willow' has witnessed or knows about it. From her reaction and lame words it's pretty clear that what's on her mind is more than either relationship or gender envy (Ack!).

I'm guessing the baby is just Jane's BSG chuckle up.

I thought this was a good issue. I never would've thought that Oz had a kid and I love how Xander thought that his child was the dog.

I, for one, really like that they showed Oz with a family, and gave Willow this sort of lack of anything. Even Kennedy was missing from this comic, which strengthens the point that Oz, who has been living without magic, is very happy, and Willow, who is living with magic, is not. I think it's good that they show how even though Willow has been saving the world, she's still restless and unhappy.

And I really like the baby, he's sooooo cute :) And the scenes with him and giles are very funny. When Giles says, "Yes, hello, baby," you can totally hear his voice.

Hey guys, my laptop died and I had to get it fixed so that's why I've been MIA the past week.

Anyway, #27. It's probably been all talked-out by now but I'll share my thoughts. Best thing about the issue was the wolf mythology about channeling energy into the Earth. That fits so well with Willow and Giles' conversation in "Lessons" and I loved the consistency.

Quote:

GILES
That doesn't belong there.
WILLOW
No, it doesn't.
GILES
That's the flora kua alaya. A native of Paraguay, if my botany serves.
WILLOW
Is there anything you don't know everything about?
GILES
Synchronized swimming. Complete mystery to me.
Moves closer.
GILES
Yep. Paraguay. Where does it come from?
WILLOW
Paraguay.
GILES
Who brought it through the Earth?
WILLOW
It's all connected. The root systems, the molecules...the energy. Everything's connected.

I'm really interested to see how this mythology will apply to the Slayers. It was really nice seeing Oz again; all those who complain about the number of returning characters should note that Oz's role here was totally justified and appropiate. It wasn't just some gratuitous cameo, he's the perfect person to advise Buffy right now. His new family were very welcome additions to the character. However... the fact that they hammered home how happy he is does make him a bit of a target. I can see Bay and Kelden becoming victims of Twilight in the next few issues. Remember Willow talking about how Tara died because she was close to Buffy? Oz might be paying a similar price.

Enjoyed this issue so much more than the last one. Only slight disappointment was Riley and how little he did. He's been in about three panels all season, I want to know more about his motives. It's frustrating that now the character is finally doing something interesting he's being almost totally ignored by the writers. In season four they were ramming him down our throats whether we wanted him or not. Oh well... [image]

I noticed this too. It's all Connected. I remember that in the show, every once in a while they would make an effort to show that the best way possible to cope with being magickal was to become at peace with it. Just like Buffy & Giles training with crystals in beginning S5, just like Willow rehab in S7, just like Oz here describing his methodology now.

So really, I can't imagine the writers making that focus a bad thing. If by doing so, if Buffy et al actually suppress their magicks, it will be for the good.

Also, remember that back story about the Briton who didn't keep suppressing his magicks and went mad? Maybe this is what happens to Willow. I could see her trying it, and failing miserably, and setting out on a path more closely aligned with Saga Vasuki and her Future counterpart.

Oh, and that whole ignore Riley thing from the writers? I have a feeling... that this is all setting him up for a big push with Riley at the end, hopefully showing him as the whitehat I know he is.

Just had a thought and didnt know where else to put it.

Has anyone else read Joss's astonishing Xmen? Because in the final couple of issues he uses this really awesome technique. Which, has been done before in Buffy the show.
In Chosen - Buffy's pep talk to the girls is cut short (but we don't realise this until late in the episode when it replays what we saw, but continued where we left off)

Astonishing Xmen - There is a conversation going on.
Later in the issue when the Xmen kick off and their plan falls into action, the same page is shown, but this time, it is shown that thanks to Emma they were all talking to each other telepathically. But we at the time never saw the REAL conversation going on

I think the final arc will have a flash back to when Buffy went to Fray's world. What did Fray see? What did Buffy read in those books?
Buffy knows that Frays world wasnt great, and it seemed that Buffy was the one who banished magic. I think Buffy may have been setting up chess pieces which will all be clear in the final arc. Obviously there are some wild cards (the betrayal, twilights identity) but ultimately when it gets to the final arc, I think Joss is going to pull this little flashback technique to make our jaws drop as we realise something else has been going on right in front of our eyes.

I dunno. I mean, to be blunt, "It's been done" in this verse already. Almost exactly. I can't imagine Joss recycling it so blatantly.

Finally, I got the issue!

I REALLY enjoyed this issue, ALOT. Those who have heard my thoughts on the season so far will understand because I felt that this issue is exactly how ALOT of them should have been: more exposition. Because a lot of Buffy the TV SHOW, was exposition and this is proof that it could translate into comics and still kick ass.

1) Oz and his baby. Though it really wasnt this huge shocker for me personally, it throws a curveball for Willow and hopefully will help set her on her path which hopefully leads away from Kennedy. Willow figured out that she is clearly unhappy with the path she is on and the way her life is, and I am thankful that it finally dawned upon her.

2) I as well think that Riley is working as a double or triple agent, whatever. He was really trying to steer Twilight away, but at the same time I think that Twilights lack of suspicion of him makes me feel that Twilight knows of Rileys two timing.

3) I forgot all about this Prince that was supposed to emerge, but upon hearing Oz say that his family could end up a target and knowing Joss's love for heartbreak, I believe that the baby might die. Hence, a big wolfy war.

AND WTF IS WITH XANDER AND DAWN!?

OK, so at the end of #26, it's made very clear that this trip to Tibet/ Oz was to rehabilitate Willow from magic once and for all. However, it really seemed to me that once they arrived in Tibet, Buffy was protecting Willow from that truth and turning the focus on the slayers and how magical they are. Anyone else pick up on that?

Actually the trip to Tibet was so the Slayers could learn from Oz how to suppress their natural Slayer magic. Willow isn't inherently magical, so she just needs to not cast spells. (Which, of course, will be very hard for her.)

Willow may actually be somewhat magical now. There was the little thing about how all the magic she absorbed in her fury in S6 still being within her because purging her of magic could possibly kill her. Hence the whole control subplot in S7.
I say "may", though, since this is open to interpretation.

Well, according to Dracula, Willow stinks of magic, so it's interesting to wonder if it hasn't been absorbed into her essence permanently.

That might make all the difference if willow goes off the deep end again, because rather than to gain more power she already has it and would just have to let loose.
