Maybe I will gain some enthusiasm when people start posting more. I just re-read it and the flying doesn't do anything for me. I didn't need Buffy to be this type of super-hero, I have Marvel & DC for that. I dunno. It just kind of takes her out of one genre and puts her into another, y'know? It's like changing Catwoman into Supergirl.

I don't think the goddess deliberately gave Buffy her powers back... I think it just happened when they touched. Apparently it only worked for Buffy, since the goddesses were picking up other Slayers with no apparent return of powers.

I don't know if the flying is a new power, or if it's a power that Slayers have always had that's just been unlocked due to the "power surge" Buffy just got.

I wonder where the Scythe is. Buffy dropped it when she fell into the goddess's hand. I thought maybe it got absorbed into her somehow, and she's now carrying the essence of Slayer power inside her... but I kind of doubt it.

I wonder why the snow was gathering on Buffy's eyes but nowhere else on her?

Re: The moment that would piss off fans... I've a feeling that in saying so, Allie pretty much defused the bombshell. Just about everyone was buzzing about how it had to be a significant death of a main character. It just had to be. What else is Joss known for? Glad he proved otherwise, and that he's not a one-trick-pony, as I've argued before. As for why it could conceivably piss people off, well, Buffy's flying, and as far as we know, we're not going to get the answer as to why/how for at least a couple of months. Considering the general impatience that has been exhibited by the fandom, it could piss some people off. I think Jeanty, who's a little more removed from fan reaction in terms of the writing, was a little more accurate about his assessment of the whole issue at hand. That it would be a "WTF?!" moment. And indeed, it was a moment where I echoed Buffy's speech bubble spontaneously.

Yeah... I was expecting some eviscerating tragedy in this issue, the way Scott was selling it. I'm glad I was wrong. And Leah and Satsu: still safe. :-*

Buffy's flying WILL piss off those people who are already annoyed at the "over-the-top comic-bookyness" of season 8... those who passionately hated Mecha-Dawn and the Forest People and that stuff will not like this.

I think it's Joss's revenge for not getting to write Wonder Woman. Will next issue feature Buffy in her satin tights, fighting for her rights and the old red white and blue? (Actually, I fully endorse Buffy in satin tights.)

I thought the issue was ok. Retreat has not been my favorite arc, but I think it was necessary as Scott Allie said to make the cast smaller. I am not sure how I feel about Buffy flying, I guess I will have to see how they plan on handling it going forward. I assume from reading the issue that none of the other slayers or Willow got their powers back. It seemed Buffy got a super surge of all the power that left the slayers. I wonder how they will handle this going forward. Will we go back to Buffy being the one and only Chosen one? Or will she somehow find a way to share those powers with everyone and then go back to regular slayer strength and power?

I think Buffy got not only all the Slayer's powers, but Willow's as well. I think she now can fly because she was given the powers that the wiccans gave up. Awkward...

That's an interesting point. Did Buffy get ALL of the power that the goddesses took from the Slayers and Wiccans? If so, she really is a superhero.

I'm very excited about what's coming up for Buffy. She's by herself and has some sort of new power that she (and us) don't understand. Can't wait to see how it's solved. This two month wait is going to suck. There is finally a plot point I'm interested in again.

well, well, well.

As someone who really wasn't a fan of the last issue, Im surprised I really enjoyed this one...its one of the first times I was actually 'on the edge of my seat'...(technically the edge of my bean-bag ;D) since the conclusion of WATG.

I think the end was severely over hyped by scott however, but I don't feel particularly let down, im just happy no ones dead...I shat myself with the 'xander?' moment.
I'm not hating the flying mumbo jumbo either...and if it is the case that by being touched by the goddess she absorbed her powers back, then maybe the flying is explained by the fact she also absorbed some of Willows powers as well, powers that the goddesses also stole. I'm hoping if this is the case though, Buffy's isn't filled with magical powers like willow and it ends with the flying.

I think this will result in some EPICNESS with the final buffy/twilight show down...I can't wait.

I really felt like this was an episode of the show too, we usually get the 'scoobies stuck unpowered and helpness' moment in every season and I enjoyed the last few pages with Buffy talking to the left over potentials.

I'll probably be back after a few re-reads to give more views on the issue, but in general I thoroughly enjoyed it and really liked the more focused character moments alongside the big fighty set pieces...something the last issue was missing and simply focused on the action.

Oh and one last point, LOVED the art work. Best since WATG!! The panels of buffy looking up at the goddess and the last 3 pages in the snow... :-* :-* :-*

This issue was okay. Liked the drama the issue had. I guess Riley was a good guy all along which is cool. The ending was weak but at least the lame gods looked a little threatening here. I liked Buffy and Xander, but it makes me wish Dander never materialised.

On the villain front, Twilight is sooooo boring right now. I'd much rather a developed character over the mystery identity; and christ Warren and Amy are shite characters. What a waste of paper. This roster is the worst line-up the show ever had.

I'm finding him more interesting now, actually. Did he know beforehand that Riley was a spy? If so, why did he keep him around/let him live?

Why does he accept being treated so disrespectfully by Amy and Warren?

For a guy who has all the world's governments doing his bidding, aren't statements like "we can't trust anybody anymore" and "sometimes we fight a losing battle" kind of odd?

How did he know beforehand how the goddesses would react?

As for Amy and Warren... they've seen him order henchmen executed for small mistakes. Why do they feel so comfortable wising off to T and even shoving him out of the way so they can bicker?

I'm more curious than ever now to find out who he is and what the hell he's doing and why.

Ok-- just got the issue. Stupid work.

I thought the artwork (especially likenesses) were great this issue. The last few panels had me focusing on the story 'WTF' moment more than art, honestly.

More Bander. w00t

I was really thinking "where's Satsu?" the entire time.

Thanks, Emmie for pointing out the obvious buildup to Buffy flying. I'm not sure why it wasn't obvious to me, perhaps it was the depiction and abrupt stop.

Some interesting theories going on: Did Buffy absorb the Scythe? Did Buffy just get her powers back? Or others' powers? Where did she get the power to fly? Willow? If she got Willow's powers, shouldn't she get furry once a month too? If Buffy has Willow's powers, how will Willow get re-powered? Is that the betrayal?

I thought Twilight was more interesting this issue. He felt more human, defining his character from a less super-villainy-aspect. Hard to do while wearing a mask and without a "real" identity.

Andrew, I don't think he was pushed away by Amy, but rather, he was acting in a way congruent to his previous statement: "We can't trust anyone anymore". After Amy ignored him, he amended that to an unspoken "I can't trust anyone anymore" and retreated to his tent.

Interesting to note, the first word from Buffy's mouth this issue was "Advance!" and the last we see Twilight he's skulking back to his tent alone.

Overall I enjoyed this issue. I'm a little bummed that we have to wait 2 months for the explanation of Riley's spydom and Buffy's powers. But this should spur more conjecture and comments than previous issues.

Don't forget, we learn Twilight's identity next arc!

She was there in the front row, in one of those scenes where Buffy is giving a speech to the Slayers.

That could be the betrayal... if Buffy now has everyone's powers and there's the possibility of re-distributing them back to their original owners... what if Buffy chooses not to, and gets rid of them instead?

But wasn't Amy pushing him away at arm's length while he was saying "We can't trust anyone anymore. Tell me..." As if she was saying "not now, I've got to fight with Warren."

She was, but I thought it was telling that he was talking about trusting people, and then turned around to be alone. With Twilight's power, I don't think it was Amy's physical force pushing him away, but the emotional act.

Well, the reason he turned and left was because he was tired and frustrated by Amy and Warren's irritating bickering. I was just amazed that he would take such a disrespectful gesture without comment... it doesn't seem in character for a megalomaniacal supervillain. And why didn't Amy have any fear of antagonizing a guy this powerful?

I'm confused. To me the last few panels looked like Buffy was growing, then in the last one it looked like she was a giant stumbling down the mountain -- flying never entered my mind. After reading everyone's comments I went back and looked at it again and I still get giant Buffy stumbling down a mountain not uber-Buffy flying. ???

She's flying. Hence the pinwheeling legs... a very Buffy thing to do, since she apparently hates flying. Also, the opening statement of the lettercol makes it pretty explicitly so.

Rebecca: As for where else Satsu was, she's the Slayer who's briefly holding the Scythe, and the girl who pushes Buffy out of the way and takes a shot at the soldier aiming at Buffy. Which brings us back to #4, where Buffy's direct orders were to go for the wound unless the people got stupid... well, it's kinda funny that right now, when Buffy's finally acting sympathetic again, Satsu shoots a guy, trying to shoot her beloved. It's also possible that Satsu was the girl driving the jeep, based on hair color, and her features look very much like Satsu's. However, the clothing color matches up with Kennedy's (from #29, and later on). BUT, Kennedy is the girl who asks Faith "Are we going to get our powers back?"... but now the problem is that Kennedy is wearing a green shirt, instead of the orange one... which leads me to believe that at multiple times, the coloration for Kennedy and Satsu got switched. Oh, and a bigger temporal problem is that the scene where Kennedy is talking to Faith, the mystery Slayer is still out on a jeep with Buffy, which makes me pretty sure that it's Satsu who's driving. Plus... Asians are hardcore crazy drivers... yours truly included. :)

Satsu's in it quite a bit actually, although she doesn't get many closeups or lines.

She's driving the jeep when Buffy and Willow go to rescue Riley;

She's listening to Buffy's speech about collecting the injured on the battlefield;

On the next page, she's changed her clothes and is standing by Buffy and holding the Scythe;

Later in the same scene she spots a sniper about to shoot Buffy, shoves Buffy out of the way and shoots the sniper (this is when Buffy falls into the goddess's hand.)

So yeah, she was there, looking after her girl. [image]

At the moment, there are still plenty of girls who have the power. Only the girls who gave away their powers are powerless.
