HC FC $100.00 432 Pages 8.5" x 12.75" ISBN: 978-1-60010-861-7
SALES POINTS: Collects the entire "After the Fall" storyline co-plotted by Joss Whedon in one oversize hardcover! Thanks to an awesome Q&A that Chris Ryall did with Whedonesque (*****WARNING MAJOR BUFFYVERSE SPOILERS******), we now know that a complete After the Fall collection is making its way to us sometime in the future. I never need much of an excuse to add more Angel stuff to my shelf, so I'm very excited. I can't wait to learn more about it, and when it will be released. I wonder if it will just contain issues #1-17 or everything Brian has done in relation to the series (#1-17, Spike: AtF, #23-27 and Last Angel in Hell). Hopefully it will contain all the extras from the HC as well, and maybe even some new ones. It would also be nice if Alex Garner returned and did a new cover for it, or someone else provides a new cover, either way.

Awesome! That'll be handy to have when one wants to read After the Fall straight through.

It should definitly have Spike after the fall too, and issue 23 would be nice but not necassary. The other issues aren't really after the fall-ish to count, but we could get lucky! Hopefully they'll have new extras (since I plan on buying all the individual HCs anyway).

I think Brian said once before that if IDW were to release a giant collection of ATF all in one book, he'd like for the Gunn issue to be on the end of it. So I'm not sure if IDW would include the Gunn issue, but we know Brian thinks its a good idea. And why the hell not? If they are going to release a super-super-definitive edition, they should go nuts. Spike After the Fall should be at the start, and the Gunn issue should be at the back. I don't think I would buy it because I already have the four hardcovers already.
It's gonna be one thick, heavy book though.

I wasn't going to buy it, but it'll probably look the sex so I don't think I'll be able to resist.
If it happens, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD fix the errors from the last volume though. I'd definately buy it just to have Angel's dying words were correct lol
I think ATF, Spike ATF & Gunn's Epilogue would probably make the set. I don't think the Dru issues and beyond really fit.

I hope they get a long introduction from Joss, the Complete ATF should have that. What else?
I don't know if this is a good idea, but how about getting Runge to redraw the one-and-a-half last pages of #11. Those pages really didn't look any good (to put it politely). I'm a bit torn between being faithful to the original published material and fixing things that are wrong.
And Spike:AtF should be there, the question is where. The reading order I find best for C:AtF is #1-8, S:AtF, #9-17, #23.
The hardcovers contain a lot of extras already, could there be any more available to put into the C:AtF? If so, then do it. Maybe some words from the artists?

[missing word in brackets] Angel's final thoughts: "But I think I'm only going to have (to) die once" There's also another mistake earlier in the final book where Illyria's talking to Wes and says "You're Aren't Coming Back" If these were fixed in a deluxe collection I'd pick it up for sure.

Eh... First night disrupts the main story but it is where it's supposed to be with George's wrap-arounds. Spike ATF has no place in the main run and must not go first. His introduction was in ATF#2, his own story builds from that not the other way around.

Right, there is no way to reasonably re-order the stories. They sprawl. It's not a line so much as a tree with one main branch with off-shooting branches. I'm still not a fan of the off-shootiness.

I agree with henz and Emmie. I've seen a lot of complaining about how Angel "isn't in chronological order". Why should it? Lots of stories have non-linear story structure and AtF isn't meant to be read chronologically. First Night and Spike assume that you've read #1-5 of AtF; rearranging it would be confusing for a new reader. First Night is clearly a series of flashbacks (with a framing device set during #5-9) while Spike is a bona fide spin-off. It's weird to me how people seem to consider it an "episode" of Angel, it's not, it's a chapter of the Spike series ( Asylum-ongoing) that happens to be set during AtF. It's a companion piece to Angel, not part of it. As such, I wouldn't want Spike to be included in this uber-collection. I'd rather have a " Spike trilogy" HC. Not sure if I'd get this Angel collection, considering I already have two copies of the series (issues and HCs) but who knows, IDW do like to tempt me with their sexy collections, those money-grabbing swines.

Heh, Paul. I actually still dislike the fact that the story structure is all over the place. You can tell pieces were added after the fact. Like the way #23 sprung up because of the Aftermath Gunn cock-up. It's one thing if the non-chronological order is deliberate. But what's done with AtF isn't a la Memento. It's just cause things weren't actually thought out before the stories were told.
The stories don't connect in any clear overarching sense. I'd agree that it makes sense to separate the Spike AtF series except that the development in Spike AtF is important for understanding AtF in regards to the spell in the basement and also Illyria's emotional develoment and vulnerability.
All the stories don't fit together readily, but all are necessary to get the full picture of the story. It still irks me, but then I guess it doesn't irk people who are big comics reader fans in other fandoms. I just see it as symptomatic of the story-sprawl of IDW at the moment.

Its not really that different from the tv shows... If you want to watch Buffy and Angel in chronological order with the crossovers you really need to look at when they aired which was all over the shop for season 7 and 5 respectfully... Not saying its good or bad either way just part of the creative process I guess, nature of telling these stories etc etc
ps i didnt buy any of the HC editions because i figures something like this MUST be on the way.. so hooray!

It still irks me, but then I guess it doesn't irk people who are big comics reader fans in other fandoms. I just see it as symptomatic of the story-sprawl of IDW at the moment. I think it's just how comic books work, to be honest. I don't have much of a problem with it, because I'm used to following Marvel comics like Civil War, where stories span multiple titles and you kinda need to read all of them to get the full picture. For me, the structure of AtF is fine, with one exception; I think First Night should have been a spin-off rather than part of the main series. It stalls the momentum of the series, and feels like an awkward road block. Had it been separate like Spike, we would have had a tidier main series, and two enjoyable spin-offs. Spike's spin-off nature doesn't bother me at all. I actually think Season Eight should be following IDW's example. Had they split their story up a little ("No Future for You" and "Predators and Prey" should have been spin-offs), I think the main series would be leaner and more satisfying, and those stories would have got the attention they deserved. IDW go too far, they have too many titles and the main title is badly organised (#18 - 27 were a narrative mess). But spin-offs and tie-ins are common in the comic medium, and maybe Season Eight should embrace that instead of clinging desperately (and futilely) to the television "season" structure. On the other hand, Joss believes a series should be self-contained. This is his quote from Buffy Magazine #93: As far as a separate story goes, we will resolve how [S8 and AtF] can both be going on. It might end up a little too much like the X-Men, who are always doing different things in every comic, but hopefully we will work out more continuity than that. I'm not going to make it like you have to read books from both companies. I don't think it's fair to people and I don't think it's fair in a single company. I hate it when they finish a Spider-Man arc in Iron Man. I get pissed off! There will be no Buffy Civil War! Well, maybe. I disagree with him; his Astonishing X-Men run was self-contained and it didn't work. It came off feeling non-canon because it didn't mesh with the rest of the universe. Some people believe AtF and S8 take place in separate universes because of the lack of continuity. Writers shouldn't be afraid to let their stories branch out into other books. Btw, how interesting is that Joss quote in light of the recent Twilight revelation? Buffy Civil War? Oh my god! ;D

Gunn was out for the count at the end of ATF, and Aftermath shows him randomly driving around. Brian came in to explain the sudden change with issue 23.
I don't think Spike ATF should be included, but I'd like Gunn's epilogue to be in there.

ps i didnt buy any of the HC editions because i figures something like this MUST be on the way.. so hooray! Good on you, mate. ;D I think you could see this coming way back when they announced the very first HC. There was no need to break a 17-issue series up into four $20+ HCs, other than to try to squeeze every last nickel out of it, so it only made sense that they'd eventually release a single large edition, too. Maybe with a tiny bit of extra new material added, to try to entice the people who'd already spent $90 on the first 4 HCs to drop another $25 or so on this new one. If you want it as a single volume, but don't want to pay HC price, I'd suggest waiting awhile, because I'd almost guarantee that they release a cheaper TPB version of this somewhere down the line... (Just to be clear: I'm all in favor of capitalism, and IDW has the right to try to make as much $$$ off of this very successful series as they can. I'm just surprised they didn't seem to get much criticism over that initial release of HCs, which I thought was... excessive.)

I'm going to go after the single HCs when this comes out, since people might start selling of the single HCs cheaper.
And in case this new HC has extra material, I'll wait a year until the prices goes down, and then buy. In case it has no extra material, I'll buy it anyway, but much later (just in case they have made changes, I would like to see them).
