So! I was re-reading Spike: After the Fall, and really looked into Illyria's character development. Looking over Issues 3 & 4, Illyria has amazingly great character moments. Some things that I really loved were:
- Illyria kissing Spike. Now, besides the fact that I enjoy Spike/Illyria, this moment is so great. Right before the smooch, Illyria tells Spike that she knows he has been sleeping with Spider. She even shows a bit of jealousy within her words. Illyria then leads on to kiss Spike. Once she does so, Illyria states, "I am your priority again." This says that Illyria wants Spike's attention; She likes having his full gaze upon her, and is jealous when it isn't. Illyria isn't familiar with her emotions, but she obviously feels something deeply for Spike, which leads to her kissing him(Which Illyria must know is a form of expressing feelings of care and love to someone else). In the end, I think Illyria is jumbled with confused emotions, and isn't completely sure of her feelings toward Spike.
- Illyria kills Jeremy. Now, this moment is so heartbreakingly sad. You feel so filled with sadness, for Jeremy, that you could maybe overlook what I'm going to write about here... Illyria says, "His absence will only strengthen our flock." Something Illyria says in Issue 1, when she murders a handful of demons. From what I can see here, Illyria cannot see the difference between killing a strong, harmful demon, and killing a human, like Jeremy. She's still so new to our world, and this can't help, but remind me of Anya's situation in Buffy. However different Anya and Illyria may be, they both were thrown into a strange world, which they had no idea how to live in. Once Illyria sees that Spike does not approve of her slaying Jeremy, Illyria says, "I was right to do it." ... (Now with a softer, and much more emotional face) "Tell me I was right to do it..." Illyria, as far as I can make out, is pleading for Spike's approval; She suddenly realizes that what she did was wrong, and feels guilt here, for what she had caused. The panel with her expression is so horrible(sad), and reminds me of Anya's "I don't understand!".
Well, I just felt that I should type my ideas out to you guys. Please, feel free to jump on in, and tell me your opinions on these moments.
With that...
I want to say 'Thank you' to Brian Lynch for writing some of the best moments in Angelverse history.
