I was reading back over The Long Way Home, Issue 4, and remembered something. So that leads to the following theory, which may have been theorized a long time ago, maybe back in April. But anyways:
In late Season 2, and Season 3, it was shown that Snyder and The Mayor both knew about the Hellmouth. Well, how would the Mayor know? What if the President had known? Then he had the Mayor and Snyder watching Buffy without telling them about her powers? Maybe once she blew the school up, Mr. President had more sources watching the Slayer? And once Sunnydale was gone, he then told the entire story to the military, putting them on her case.
And in Issue 4, the General guy says: "Where do you think that power comes from? Oh wait: You already know." So the military / army knows that Buffy was taken back in time and shown how the first Slayer got her power. With that demon mist or magic or whatever?
The only thing tha General seems to be completely wring about is saying the Skayers aren't human. They're human, but their power has unhuman origins.
So, is it possible that the government has been having Slayers watched for a while now? I mean, even before Buffy was chosen?
And am I crzy?

The Mayor knew because the Mayor was responsible for building the town of Sunnydale, he was over 100 years old by the time Season Three came around. He had built the town for demons to feed on. He had his own agenda, and wasn't synched with the government, president in anyway

Omg never really though of that. I think ti could be right. I never understood how Snyder knew and the fact that it didn't tell you what was going on with him then he got ate and all. But i think you have a point.
I mean the Slayer is the most deadly assassin really, and the President would what well more need to know about it. And with them having some one (or thing) watch her all the time would make them feel more in control which is what the government want anyhow. Its not like secrets of Buffy being the slayer was hidden much.
I think it would make sense if the government and such knew of Buffy and of the Slayer. Also if Buffy went all power mad (like General Voll said) Then the government would try to step in and stop her. And i don't think even the government are that stupid to not notice demons running around killing so i think they would know of demons and such so then they would most likely know of the slayer.

I like your theory but I don't think it is true... This area of the buffyverse never really got explored as you know, Snyder got all gobbled up by The Mayor and all so...

I think the government could have been watching the slayer, as i said before the government like or try to be in control of everything and i would think they would want to be in control of the slayer. Maybe we will find out more about the government in S8, since the army are kinda declaring war with the slayers. And Snyder and the cops knew of demons and such so i would think the government would deffo know of them.
And yer the Initiative where fully aware of demons. It surprised me they though the slayer was a myth. Its not like Buffy kept her being the slayer a tight secret by the end of season 3 i think just about everyone in SunnyD High knew of Buffy and what she was.

I don't think he thought that far ahead, but now he may use things from the past to make everything seem more "connected". I wouldn't be surprised if the Initiative were to return and play an active role this Season.
If the General knew all about slayers and their origin, I'm sure it is also known the rest of the US Gov't. It seems as if they have been keeping tabs on Buffy for a while now. I'll bet ever since Season 4.

Yer i think if Joss didn't think that far a head he would probs blend it in to this season. It would be nice to see the Initiative back, maybe they could see it the same way as the army that the slayer is a liability and join forces. But i think if Riley was still with them he wouldn't go with the idea him once dating Buffy and all.

Maybe Riley will be an enemy of Buffy's this time around. He is a changed man anyway. I'm sure that after catching Buffy sleeping with Spike...and then only hearing about the destruction of Sunnydale he might see Buffy in the same light as the military does.
Remember that Riley is a soldier after all, he could be manipulated or something. If it indeed comes down to that anyway.

That would make a good twist in the Buffy verse if he did. Maybe his wifey Sam would have some influence on his turning against Buffy. But i would think that Riley would trust Buffy's judgment though i mean he did date her and trust her, i don't think he would see her as a threat but then again anything is possible in Buffyverse.

The Government knew simply because of one person. Maggie Walsh. Buffy was a part of the Government for a while, they knew she was the slayer, they knew that slayers existed, because obviously they have been fighting demons themselves, and have probably run across some slayers before. I dont think they president would know because The Council is in England so there would be no association with them and the slayer. I dont think your theory is true, but its very interesting!

If the president wanted to know more about the slayer then I'm sure he or she would find out. If they knew of the slayer then they would know of the watchers council too. I don't think that the council being in England would make a differences to them finding out what they want.

They Could obviously find out what they wanted. But would the Council associate themselves with the American government? I doubt it.

There's one thing wrong with the whole if the mayor knew then so did the president. to my knowlege, mayors don't talk to the prez directly. do you really think Bush talks to any of the mayors in the country? Even if the mayor told the prez, i'm sure he'd think that the mayor was a freaking lunatic.

Of course the government would be watching the slayer. They were watching Angel in the 1930s so logic dictates if they knew about a vampire with a soul they probably knew about slayers. Also I think all of season 4 with the initiative proves that. With government it's about power...who has the big guns and I'm guessing that in the buffyverse the government has been looking for ways to control the slayer world for decades...the initiative proved that they couldn't control it...now they are going to destroy it. edit: Hah just noticed this thread is a year old

The Mayor hired Snyder to be principal. So he probably told him that it was on a hellmouth. Im guessing thats how Snyder knew.
