I'm certainly not a huge Riley fan, but I'm vaguely excited for this. Personally, it's my predication that Sam is going to die, but I hope I'm wrong.

Chen's cover is beautiful but incredibly boring, Moline's cover is perfect. I love how it depicts Riley as a fun action hero.
Fandom (myself included) was always way too harsh on Riley. Glad to see Joss (or whoever's idea this was) defying the haters and giving him the attention he deserves.

Wow. Very boring. That's probably my least favorite Chen cover. Likenesses are below her standards too.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Chen cover. Added to the OP too. It's rather uninspired... and I'm waiting for the usual "feminist" battlecry of "Why are the bloody bazoombas so damn inflated!" I actually kinda like Moline's... as Paul pointed out, it's very action hero-esque... and really, I'm actually kinda hoping that this issue will be that. A good fun romp with some thrills, spills, twists, and the requisite heartache. Nothing too ambitious for Espenson until she's proven her mettle...

It's great to know more about this issue and see some of the cover art. I always liked Riley and it will be fun to read how he got mixed up in the events of Season 8 and what happened to his wife. As for the art I have to agree that Jo's cover is no where near as exciting as Moline's. Her's isn't bad but it's not on the same level as most of her other work.

yeah, i can't say that the chen cover is anything exciting. i'm glad espenson is back. i can't say that i was a huge fan of riley in the show, but in the comic medium, i can say that i'm finding him more interesting now.

Wow. Very boring. That's probably my least favorite Chen cover. Likenesses are below her standards too. I think it looks pretty good actually. Ivana Milicevic has a very distinct looking mouth and I think Chen captured that in her portrayal of Sam. I liken it to drawing SMG's nose. Riley still looks like Riley. Agreed, it's not the most exciting cover, but I think it's decent. I can't wait to find out what happened to Sam... ::twiddling my thumbs in anticipation::

Moline's cover is cool. Dynamic action, interesting depiction of the characters, love the sense of movement and excitement. I also think that's his best take on Buffy that we've seen. Much better than his drawing her in ToYL. Her character is better captured there where as in ToYL she and Erin were nigh interchangeable. Thanks for the heads-up on the Chen cover. Added to the OP too.and I'm waiting for the usual "feminist" battlecry of "Why are the bloody bazoombas so damn inflated!" It's the art that's perpetuating the cliche. So how about continuing to point that out because it's a valid criticism? And yes, once again Chen surgically enhances the women. Apparently Sam's traded in her protective gear for a breast lift and a push-up bra. Everyone knows women in the demon fighting spy biz need to distract their enemies with their well-endowed mammary glands! YOU CANNOT RESIST THE POWER OF THE SIDE-BOOB. IT WILL LULL YOU INTO SUBMISSION AND PWN YOUR ASS. FINISH HIM, SIDE-BOOB. FINISH HIM! Sorry to say when I look at Chen's covers I see her surgically enhancing the characters. Riley gets his scar removed (but this seems like a continuity error for the entire season so whatev), the men get prettified, and all the women get an out-of-this-world boob job. Joy. /sarcasm Remember back when Season 8 started and Joss said he handpicked the artists to not draw the women in the comics typical Tits 'n Ass style? I think Chen needs to take a remedial course. She's like an English major in college who's forgotten how to do Algebra. Bad marks, Chen.

Erm... Em... are you forgetting that I usually make that criticism too? Just too tired to bother anymore... Chen does inflate the chest... apparently it's her thing. I'm not going to bother flogging the dead horsie. Plus... Chen doesn't do T&A... just Ts. The A is the doing of Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon. Now that was some A. Oh, and hey... where have you been? PMs waiting in your mailbox!

yes! ive been waiting for an issue to answer some questions about Riley. and Chen's cover is not THAT bad. The cover has decent enough likenesses. I actually searched up screencaps 'cause I disagreed with E that the likenesses were bad. But Chen has her artistic cliches showing, just like we all know Joss only lets folks be happy in a relationship so he can destroy them for maximum angst. Chen's artistic cliches include: - Overly prettifying the men. Riley looks like he did from a Season 4 promo in this cover. Not the rough rider of As You Were. - Women get their bodies surgically enhanced. Boobs! Curves that won't quit! - Pose-ishness. Yep, that's a word. (Okay, not but whatever...) Chen doesn't draw dynamic covers. The characters are posing as they would in a promo pic. This is most typical when she has the characters breaking the 4th wall to look out at the reader. One of her best covers that breaks this cliched tendency is #20 After These Messages where all the body types are naturally presented, the likenesses are awesome, and the characters aren't looking at the reader, but watching the Buffy cartoon on the TV. When a cover hits all these marks, it's not Chen's best. So this Riley one-shot cover? Not her best work. Lacks dynamic action, unnatural body depictions and artificial posing. It's not terrible art out of all the art in the world, sure. It's just nowhere near her best and when measured against her better works, no it's not great. Great covers make a statement besides "I'm Riley, watch me pose. This is my wife, Sam. Check out her tits." The cover for "After These Messages..." says "We're Buffy, Willow and Xander and we love hanging out together, sharing popcorn and watching TV. Whoa! We're on the TV as cartoons--check out how meta-layered this is!" A great cover tells a story. Actually, a good cover tells a story. Moline's cover tells a story: "Married action heroes Riley and Sam fight 'n sync! Buffy is mournful and out of touch with connection."

Hey, hey, hey I never said they were bad. I can still tell it's Riley and Sam, but I think they're flawed, not perfect likenesses like she usually does.
