giving it that name is going to make the movie come under the very judgmental eyes that the fans of the game are going to have

giving it that name is going to make the movie come under the very judgmental eyes that the fans of the game are going to have Very true. There's also the fact that the majority of people are going to dismiss it because it's a video game movie. Not only do I love the Prince of Persia series, but Jake Gyllenhaal is one of my favorite actors, so I actually have high hopes for this movie. Also, I just read that the Prince of Persia merchandise being release throughout the year to promote the film includes a Dagger of Time replica. Do want! EDIT: www.amazon.com/Prince-Persia-Sands-Dagger-Replica/dp/B0035MTMIG/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1273128044&sr=1-13Never mind. It's awful cheap looking for $22.

Well, it's another video game movie, which does make me wary, but its produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, so there's that. I know people are gonna give it stick for Jake Gyllenhaal being the lead actor, but I think he would be alright. Give him a chance, ppls. Might check this out when it comes out. Looks good

giving it that name is going to make the movie come under the very judgmental eyes that the fans of the game are going to have "The Sands of Time" is also the name of the trilogy (now saga, I guess, since the new game will take place between "The Sands of Time" and "Warrior Within"). I think that people are just going to have to realize that it's a very loose adaptation of the games, featuring many elements from all three games, but with a new spin on it. Characters aren't going to be direct ports of the video game counterparts, not just because of name changes. Dastan seems more like the Prince from the latest incarnation than the Prince from "The Sands of Time" saga (more quippy and mischievous than emo).

I just bought my tickets online to see this at midnight! I'm excited. Is anyone else planning to see it soon?

Planning on it, but I think I'll wait until after Memorial Day weekend. Too much craziness to stomach, considering I'm already donning my tiara and heels (not really) for Sex and the City 2 (which I've already heard is going to be awful... *sigh*).

I just got back from seeing it and I loved it! My Jake was pretty great and I liked Gemma Arterton a lot more than I thought I would've. A lot of the things that were changed annoyed me, but I'm usual pretty anal about that kind of stuff. Spoilers for the film and several of the games: I also loved the references to other games in the series.
First and foremost, Prince Dastan's personally greatly resembles the "Prince" from the 2008 game. He even wears a very similar scarf throughout a large part of the movie! Also, the "prince" from PoP08 was a thief and that's how Dastan started out in the movie. He actually moved on to become a real prince, though.
Gemma Arterton also bares more physical resemblance to Elika than Farah, who she was very loosely based on. The part where Tamina was prepared to die to destroy the dagger also reminded me of Elika's death to trap Ahriman.
Then of course there's also the fact that Dastan's armor is based upon the Prince's outfit from Warrior Within. The arm of the user of the Dagger of Time also glows like the Dark Prince's did in The Two Thrones.
I didn't like the "hourglass" at all. Me thinks they were going for epicness, but meh. Another thing I didn't like was Dastan's brothers. The actors weren't that great in my opinion and the characters annoyed me a few times. Also, for a film that keeps ramming the whole brotherly love-thing down your throat, I think Dastan could've actually gave a crap when his brothers die. I don't want to watch him sitting around and cry for two hours, but still. One tear maybe? A sad expression at least? I don't think that's too much to ask for.
The ending was kind of bad. So they end up getting married? Blahh. They should've ended it more like the game. I don't think I could give a numbered rating. (I'm not good at that.) I'd love to see it again, though. I'll probably get the DVD when it comes out.

Sounds like a Disney-fied ending if I ever heard one. And therein lies the main problem. This is a franchise that was built on games that were rated T and higher. To dumb down the themes to something that a PG-13 audience can grasp means that a lot of stuff gets toned down or whitewashed entirely.

I watched this yesterday by myself (I actually really like watching movies by myself on occasion). My review is up HERE. In short, I didn't like it. I wanted to like it, since I loved the games, but the movie failed in so many areas for me. Details in the review.
