Alrighty then. So how does one get one’s mitts on these goodies? Details for participation are as follows. Please try to follow the guidelines as closely as possible. ONLY members of SlayAlive are eligible to participate as part of each of the prizes consists of karma points AND a signature badge that winners can display proudly.
Deadline: 12:00pm CST, July 15th, 2010
Prompt: Buffy Season 8 is unique in that it is the official canonical continuation of the series in comic format. As such, it is the job of a comic book artist to translate the characters into 2D avatars that retain the essence of what made them spark on screen. No menial task, I assure you.
Over the last 3 years, we’ve seen different takes on these characters by several talented artists. Now, it’s your turn. Your entry should be your OWN spin on a character/several characters. BE CREATIVE! Remember, it’s the ESSENCE of the character that is most important. All entries must be ORIGINAL. No scans or manipulations of the work of others. You’re on the honor system here. Caught plagiarizers will be disqualified.
Media: Pencil, pen, ink, color pencils, woodcuts, digital, whatever… use your media of choice. Entries can be either in color, or black & white.
Size: Since entries will be submitted digitally, we ask that you submit a hi-res image of your entry. Hi-res images are preferred, as they will better represent the quality of your work, and look better when displayed on the forum. Submissions should be in JPEG format.
Submission: Entries should be submitted via e-mail to me at wenxina@slayalive.com. Please include your real name, SlayAlive username, and mailing address in your e-mail. All entries must be anonymous, with no identifying marker included on the art piece itself. Entries should have “SlayAlive Art Contest” in the subject line for easy identification. ONE (1) submission PER member, so make it good.
Judging: All eligible entries will be collected by me, and forwarded to Georges Jeanty, who will be the sole judge in the matter. All entries will also be displayed in this thread for all to see. Winners will be alerted via e-mail, as well as on the thread. Physical prizes will be shipped to the provided mailing address at NO COST to the winner. An image code for the signature badge will be included in the announcement e-mail. Karma points will be added accordingly.
Any questions can be addressed to me at the given e-mail address.
Thank you, and GOOD LUCK!
~Xi

ENTRIES
::WINNERS::
First, I have a statement from Georges, who was very impressed with the quality of entries:
OMG! What talented people! I really need to step up my game after seeing all these entries! The hardest part about judging this contest was that I could only pick 4!
Let me start out by saying everyone who entered is wildly talented and your love for all things Buffy is obvious! I said I'd be judging this contest on creativity and you guys delivered!
I'll get to the winners in a minute, first I want to comment on some of these entries. I wish now, we had established an age range and what medium to work in. Looking at all these entries, I marveled at how vastly different they are in medium and content. Since I'm always moaning about likeness and how hard it is for me to nail them, I love the Black and White piece (Buffy with the scar). And the colored one where the Scoobys are surrounded by Vamps looks like it came from a comic! (did it?) I love the digital painting on the one with Buffy and Drusilla. I'm doing a Dru piece right now and am going back and forth with Juliet Landau about it, so that one motivated me to work harder! The Finger puppets one is great. Joss would love that one. The Oz one would make a great poster...hmmm. Buffy surrounded by the scaly monster is a great likeness! The Faith one is a great pose. Work a little more on the face and you got it! Still a lot of Tara love going around (that girl just won't die.. in our hearts!)
Okay, on to the contest and while it sounds like a cliche, you are all winners because we all have at least one thing in common, we love Buffy!
And now the winners... after these messages..
Doncha just hate when American Idol does that?!
None of the entries were titled so I'll try and give a description for the winners.
3rd place: The Twilight symbol mirror image. I mentioned I would be judging mostly on creativity and this one was creative! I love the duality. With a little work, this would make a great cover. Was that a water color piece? (Ed. note: That's #8)
2nd place: Black and White Caricature of Buffy with the scar and stake. I see some computer effects here, which is cool but what got me with this one was the face. That is a great rendition. If you draw that well by hand you certainly have a future in art my friend! I love the tones you laid down on the face and figure. Was that done with markers? (Ed. note: That's #16)
1st place: This one scared me. I forbid you to show Dark Horse this page... because it's so good! I don't know what you do for a career but you would certainly have one in comics. Bravo! Now cut it out, you're making me look bad! (Ed. note: That's #2)
GRAND PRIZE: Cirque Du Slay. This was hands down the most creative of the bunch! I love how you did this. It makes me wish I had done a Circus type cover for the series! It's so obvious! All of the characters are there! For me this one received the award it did because of creativity. We could argue about the likeness, but hey, even in their clothes I could tell who they were.Well done! I hope you've chosen a field in the arts because you are really good!
There you have it. Again, I want to thank everyone who participated and a special thanks to SlayAlive for hosting it, and to Dark Horse for giving such cool prizes.
I would personally like to thank everyone who entered and hope you had, above all, fun drawing. You've gotten a glimpse into what I do every day, and I love it!
Thanks for participating, and who knows? Down the line maybe we can do something else? Now, back to Season 8!
~Georges
Thank you all for your hard work and participation. I'll be mailing off the prizes this week, except for the Grand Prize. Yours will be coming straight from Jeanty, so you know that no one has ever laid their grubby mitts on your prize. Congratulations to all the winners. Well-deserved!
