I watched the trailer, and couldn't help but see Buffy. But I will still go see this, as it does look like it could be good! really? I mean I can see that it kind of films like a buffy feature film would. I think that would be the camera work that Joss would want. But character wise I think she's made a nice departure! Tyler, I think that its getting a limited release

Oh by the way, guys, try to read the book beforehand! The book is awesome.
And I have to agree with cowboyguy, when I watched the trailer I couldn't help but see good old Buffy.

Even in her acting, the coldness, detached.

I've watched the two trailers a couple of times and it just looks really good, I'm getting pretty excited for it. I hope that it gets released in my city and that I don't have to travel for it(which I will, if I have to). I'm excited to read the book as well.
This finally looks like a film that could lift up SMG's career...seeing as how there are no ghosts or animated dogs in it...I'm very excited for her and to see it, although all I see is Buffy when I watch it.

Thats funny, I never saw Buffy when I watched the trailer. Except for the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar played Buffy. I really do hope this boosts her career. I can't wait to see it. I'll probably have to wait until it comes out on DVD since its going to be a limited release and the movie theater I go to only shows the most popular movies that are out. I love the casting by the way, David Thewlis is an O.G.!

WOW. I LOVED THE BOOK! Can't wait for the movie. I wish SMG was a brunette for this role though. The character was described as having brown hair, I think it would have been better fitting. Can't help but think that the film folks wanted viewers to have the response Cowboy described in the post above. Maybe they are trying to capitalize on the Buffy Buz that sees to have been recently renewed with Season 8, Palley and Twighlight...

I'm re-reading the book to refresh myself on everything. All I remember from it is that she masturbated in front of a schizophrenic . When is the movie getting released?

I believe it is getting released in mid-March...the official website is said to be fully operational this month so hopefully we'll get some more information. Now that I've read most of the book I'm very interested in what they're going to modify.

The movie has already premiered in Brazil. So far, most of critics gave positive reviews for both the movie and Sarah's performance. Other praises go to the direction by Emily Young and the photography. I haven't seen the movie yet, but, from one of the reviews it's clear that... the masturbation scene is there. I'll put links with some of the reviews bellow, translating the parts about SMG. There are some spoilers (minor, in my opinion). "The cast is headed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, that is finally able to separate her image from the vampire slayer. It's clear how hard the actress tries to express exactly how peculiar her character is, as she didn't hesitate to make very embarrassing scenes, such as the one where Veronika arouses herself* only by looking at a guy that, as herself, was an inpatient. The effort pays off and the actress achieves one of her best performances in movies." *Could either be "arouses herself" or "gets excited [on a sex way]". Full review: www.cinemacomrapadura.com.br/criticas/1448/veronika_decide_morrer_(veronika_decides_to_die_2009)"The cast, however, is above the movie's standard. Sarah Michelle Gellar, in one of her career's few dramatic rules*, is intense and very secure, never overdoing the character's suffered tone." *In movies, I suppose. www.cinemacomrapadura.com.br/criticas/1449/veronika_decide_morrer_(veronika_decides_to_die_2009)"...[the ones who go watch the movie] might be surprised by [...] the audacious scenes Sarah Michelle Gellar puts herself through to disassociate her image at once from the blondy who slayed vampires." www.omelete.com.br/cine/100021612/Critica__Veronika_Decide_Morrer_.aspxAnd the only negative review so far: "Sarah Michelle used to do well at TV show 'Buffy...', in which she spent most of time chasing weird beings. Here, when she actually could show some dramatic abilities, she can't convince as a depressive person, neither as someone who just got back the willing to live." www.domtotal.com/noticias/detalhes.php?notId=129136That guy clearly never watched Buffy.

Thanks for the info.
But
"by looking at a guy that, as herself, was an inpatient"
what is 'inpatient'?

Thanks for the info. But "by looking at a guy that, as herself, was an inpatient" what is 'inpatient'? Sorry. I didn't know how to translate the word, so I looked up on the web, and that was the suggestion given. The guy is a patient at the mental institution.

you guys may hate me for that (god, I hate myself for that), but yes, it premiered here in Brazil august 14, and I still didn't see it. I LOVE the book, read it last year, and I've been waiting for the movie forever, but the swine flu thing is getting kinda dangerous here too (the university I attend to is closed for over a month now), so going to the movies is a no deal But maybe it comes to dvd here first, and as soon as I see it I'll comment on it ^^ By the way, not all of the reviews are positive, but that's expected, because even though Paulo Coelho is a big monster best seller, he's not taken seriously by a large part of the "so-called intellectual" community, which includes literary critics and movie critics and stuff. Veronika is the only book I've read, so I can't tell if those haters are right about Coelho.
