I cannot wait[/i] to get this. I was never a huge Book fan, but I always found him lovable, and likable. And his mysterious background made him all the more interesting. I have a feeling that this story won't disappoint. 'Serenity: Float Out' didn't really impress me all too much, so I'm thinking that this will.

This has been on my pull-list since it was announced. I'm really excited about it but I think I've known for a while now what Shepherd Book's past is going to look like.

I'm really looking forward to this. Book was very much a holy man of mystery.
Having re-watched my Firefly/Serenity DVD's, my bet is Shepherd Book was at one time an operative for the Alliance, or one of the men with blue hands.
He has mad weapons skills, and is utterly fearless. I seriously doubt Jubal Early could have taken Book face to face, and Early did state "he's no shepherd" after he knocked him out. And it was Book that shot down The Operative's hit men, which indicates to me he was no stranger to a warrior's ways.
My belief is that Book became repelled at what the Alliance called on him to do, and escaped to the monastery. And when Mal stated he wanted to discuss Books past, Book coldly tells him "No, you don't".

Operative was my thought. I wasn't sure I wanted to post it due to spoilers, but yay. I think it's the obvious choice, but the Whedons have surprised me before. A lot.

"When I talk about belief why do you always assume I'm talking about God"? This is going to be goood! We already kind of know 'WHAT' Book was. The show and movie told us without actually telling us. Gave us enough information to do that ourselves but we don't know 'WHO' Book was pre-Firefly/Serenity. We were introduced to the character near the end of his life. I really hope this lives up to expectations. A lot of fans have been waiting for something like this for a while now! CAN'T STOP THE SIGNAL!

Any word on if this will be included in a collected book, perhaps with the Wash one-shot?

Any word on if this will be included in a collected book, perhaps with the Wash one-shot? It's already a hardcover, unless a Serenity Omnibus type book is in the works I doubt it'll be collected in anything else.

I'll definitely be getting this, still need to catch up on the Wash comic's. Has anyone here read them? What are your thoughts?

Really excited about this. If it's half as decent as Wash's one-shot I'll be happy.

I'm definitely excited for this. I still need to read the other Firefly/Serenity comics, but I've always wanted to know more about Book. We were given so many hints/teases in the series and the movie. It'll be nice to have this out finally.

Preview, here: www.wired.com/underwire/2010/10/serenity-shepherd-book/Agree that this is already better than Floating Out. The only thing I liked about that oneshot was the art and Zoe's big reveal. I did not expect this to include what it did... Book had always been one of my lesser favorites in the show, but this comic may change that. Amazing writing and art. Cannot wait to read more.

I've loved Chris Samnee's work for a while now (just from his sketches and loose illustrative style, since I haven't actually read anything that he's drawn before), and I love how he manages to capture likenesses with his dramatic but minimalist approach to the characters.

Does anyone know if the stuff in this book takes place before the actual Firefly series? I haven't read the Better Days arc or the Wash One shot yet and I'm wondering if I should before picking up this.

Yeah, this book is supposed to basically cover Shepherd Book's life, from way back when he was a kid, I think. So yeah, some parts of it will have taken place before Firefly.
The Wash one-shot takes place after Serenity, so I doubt it'll matter to this story at all. "Better Days" will probably not be entirely necessary to enjoy this. Who knows... but if you feel like you must check it out, go for it.

I haven't read the Better Days arc or the Wash One shot yet and I'm wondering if I should before picking up this. Don't worry about it. Float Out is set after this, as Wexina said. And Better Days isn't really important at all. (Although it's probably my favorite Serenity story in comics so far.) That said, I really haven't enjoyed the Serenity comics too much to date, but this one looks outstanding.
