It always strikes me, when watching scenes with Caleb from Season 7 of Buffy, just how much he talks like Malcolm Reynolds. How his lines are written, his speech patterns, etc.
I wondered if it was a Joss thing, a Nathan Fillion thing, or a combination of the two ... but I'm just starting Season 3 of Angel now, and Fred is sure sounding a whole lot like River.
(It's actually getting kind of annoying ... I really hope they move her past the "scared little girl hiding in corners, babbling nonsense and occasionally blurting out something brilliant" trope soon.)
Does this kind of character similarity show up throughout the Whedonverse?

I don't know if happens anywhere else in the Whedonverse, but it is quite common for writers, muscians etc to have this trait in their work. It's sort of their signature with these similarities.

I have noticed Caleb sounding an awful lot like Mal at times, but that has never distracted me from enjoying the character (probably because I love Nathan Fillion so much).
As far as Fred sounding and acting like River? Nope. Never noticed that one.
I think many of Joss' characters do have similar traits, but that is okay by me. Because even in their similar traits, there is enough that also makes them unique.

I certainly notice similarities between Dollhouse and Buffy. Faith and Echo (once she goes super bad ass), Topher and Willow, Adelle and Giles.
But it never bothered me too much.

I always saw Boyd as being Giles since he wanted to always protect Echo in Season 1. Just like Giles always wants to protect Buffy. Topher was like a combo of Willow and Xander.

There are some similar characters in each Jossverse, but there was enough of a difference in each character so that it didn't bug me. And don't worry about Fred, she's not " the scared little girl hiding in corners, babbling nonsense and occasionally blurting out something brilliant" for too long. Once she gets settled into living in LA again, she's different and really awesome

I always felt that Special Agent Booth from Bones was quite similar to Angel...apart from the fact its the same actor. When watching Booth, I notice similar characteristics between him and Angel. It's always amusing for me to try and notice them. One of my favourites was when he was ranting about wanting to burn the Jeffersonian and it reminded me of Angelus... But that's probably all just me

But Booth loses his patience more easily and goes to the rant-and-whine place. And Angel's threats are better.

I do notice similarities a lot, but it doesn't really bother me. There are usually enough differences allowing them to be their own characters, also, I like the characters so if you want to make a Faith or Buffy or Fred 2.0 i won't complain, lol.
