There is actually something really repulsive about the woman on that cover. I can't look at it for too long

There is actually something really repulsive about the woman on that cover. I can't look at it for too long I think that's the point. She's killing someone and she doesn't look all that good. Bad make-up or skin. She looks very ill.

I'm a little apprehensive about this issue really, because being a Spike fan I see this storyline as being a potentially disastrous one. Please let him be in character, please IDW!

Well we must have some psychics on the board because I just finished issue 36 and to my surprise, Anne has made her triumphant return with a run in with james. That will be fun to see playout.
As for spike and his soul we are still not made clear if it's truly gone but spikes recent oocness is attributed to possible lack of soulness.
Bad news for dez lovers. The souleater gets her and puts her down for the count.
Finally a weird sidenote... The title for the issue is virtually the same. It's called prophet for profit chapter 3 of connorland as appose to 2. But overall a good issue I think you can see the change in writer through the dialogue.

This issue was OK. At this point Williingham's run had gotten to a place where I like it, just don't love it. I sort of see it as his interpretation of the characters to a certain extent, while the current circumstances address some of the other OOC things about the book.
Too bad for Dez, but I really am more concerned about our main characters anyway.

Oddly enough I think Laura Kay weathermill may stick around for a bit.

Dez died? Omg, that's so amazing. I actually fell out of my chair when I read that. Wow. At least Armstrong's mess is officially taken care of. We can all thank this arc for that, if nothing else.

Yup ding dong the dez is dead. You could tell the way it happened was set up because the writers figure we won't miss her.
Now it's time for the main event: James vs team angel.

Aw... Dezzy died...
Well anyways, I guess we won't ever figure out what happened to her sister. I actually always wondered about that.
I'll write up a spiffy summary in a short bit.

I Wonder if they'll clean up any other stuff from After the fall/ Aftermath like the rest of the lords. I mean i know they took out a couple but they never finitely said that they were no longer a threat. At least with W&H back in issue 17 you assume W&H are taking the backburner since they seemed not to exist.
Then again since the lords are sort of connected to W&H maybe they'll get dealt with in 38 and beyond.

M'kay. Summary Spike and Illyria manage to subdue Liss. Laura and the rest of the team keep Angel away from Liss so that his soul remains safe. Laura asks Angel to run a cold bath and pour Aranthia Acid from her office into it while Connor obtains one of Laura's daggers. Polyphemus then informs Spike and Illyria (while they carry Liss to the bathroom) that the Soul Eater hasn't fed since she ate Hubble's soul and she requires another to survive. After placing Liss under the acidic water, Laura instructs Angel to cut Illyria's throat with the dagger. Illyria is not afraid of this and tells Angel he should not worry about her. After Illyria's blood is spilled, Laura explains that Illyria's blood is very powerful and the mixture will burn away the soul Liss is still feeding on and she would eventually go into a resting state and starve to death within a few hours. Illyria demands to be left alone while she tends her wound.
Meanwhile, just outside of the Hyperion, Ragda of the Sisterhood of Jaru Hull is outside with other warriors. They prepare an opposition due to the world being greatly affected by the "Old Ways". The Sisterhood expects dire consequences should they fail.
Five hours later, Spike and Angel discuss the possibility that Spike may indeed be soulless. Spike admits to feeling "off his game" as of late and his recent tryst with celebrity vampire Felicia Valentine is brought up as an example. Spike is adamant that he is still on the good side while Angel feels that Spike may be reverting to his fragile mental state when he first obtained his soul. The conversation is interrupted when Dez is attacked by Liss, who apparently was waiting for her moment to strike. Liss consumes Dez's soul and drops her dead body to the ground. Now restored, Liss attacks the rest of the team, knocking a still-healing Illyria into the bathroom wall and striking Polyphemus to the ground. Before Liss could eat Laura's soul as well, Angel beheads Liss and stabs her in the lower spine, effectively immobilizing the Soul Eater. In the aftermath, Ilyria and Polyphemus are seemingly unharmed and Angel realizes that Connor is missing.
At a shelter, Anne Steele is setting dinner for a group homeless teenagers with James as a guest and the donor of the food. After Anne comments that James must be an angel for all his help, the teenagers start choking on their meals. Realizing the food had been tainted, Anne demands to know what James is up to as she isn't new to the world of demons. James states that she has never dealt with anyone like him before and he mentions how his plan to impregnate humans with demons is a step process. He then opens up a portal where several demons enter. James tells Anne that he will bring death and rebirth to this world, that pain is "enlightening", and this would only be the beginning.

LOL! What is up with the pregnancy obsession? James wants demon babies. Illyria wants demon babies. Everyone wants demon babies. BABIES ARE EVIL ZOMG.
How about some thought provoking moral quandaries? I miss those.
As for the Spike story, they're backed themselves into a corner. His OOC behavior isn't explained by soulessness as he's still OOC compared to the soulless Spike of the show. Oh well.

As for the Spike story, they're backed themselves into a corner. His OOC behavior isn't explained by soulessness as he's still OOC compared to the soulless Spike of the show. Oh well. Oh God, who cares about Spike, he's in like 10 books a month. Dez died this issue, get some perspective people! Tongue-in-cheek comments aside, I'm actually not very impressed with how Aftermath has been completely washed away. Okay, so it wasn't a very popular story (although all the venomous hate for it was a tad overdramatic IMO) but guess what, IDW, you published it and you should have more respect for your own work. Poor Kelly Armstrong, who came in and did her best to introduce and flesh out new characters to the Angel mythology, only to have them lazily retconned and killed off immediately after. Someone on Whedonesque described IDW's handling of Angel as "wishy washy", and it's totally true. Since the end of AtF, they've floundered embarassingly, unable to commit to any kind of longterm direction. They're just publishing the first crap they can think of, then retconning it when the fans hate it. Dez was a decent character, and Armstrong did a good job of establishing her backstory and personality. If you want to kill her off, fine, but do it in a way that's respectful to the character. How about you have her go into a feral rage to protect Connor, and find herself unable to turn human again (as foreshadowed in Aftermath). That way, her human self is "dead" in a genuinely tragic and heroic way? It's a sad state of affairs when Illyria of all people comes out and says "Hey guys, shouldn't we be mildly upset that a member of our family is dead on the floor? Guys?" I defended Dez and James for so long, insisting that they had potential, but why bother when IDW obviously have no investment in their own creations. The rest of the issue was pretty bad as well, although for some reason I find it too fascinating to stop reading. It was nice seeing Anne again finally, although her dialogue was horrible and stilted. James continues to interest me as a villain, although the whole Potentate-retcon is unclear and lazy.
