Stephanie Meyer haters would dislike that season 8 would be doing a "homage" to a story they consider an inferior ripoff. Bangels would be upset that Buffy seems to be favoring Spike in the picture. Since I've never read any of Meyer's books or seen any of the movies, and I have no horse in the Bangel vs. Spuffy race, I was completely unaffected. Georges' cover for #37 and Chen's for #38 are the ones that concern me the most. So the #39 cover will get us "amped up." That's good, I guess. Not sure if we'll be amped in a good way or a bad way. Meh. I don't like Stephanie Meyer (because of her as a person, not her mediocre writing), but I really like the cover. I think it's about time the similarities between the stories (and those particular characters) were pointed out. I'm also a Bangel shipper, and it didn't bother me, but I'm also a Spuffy shipper, so that explains that, lol. I always thought of "amped up" as a good thing. Now "worked up" has always been a bad thing to me. But I'm not sure. Some phrases have different meanings to different people.

So... here's my theory. I don't wanna spoil anything for anyone but if you look @ 38's cover.... The Scooby’s are going back to Sunnyd' to see an old frenemy who has something they need. What if, by returning to the actual past where the Scooby’s formed, blah blah blah, and something happens... something changes... and history is altered, and the possible S5 we all knew and cried over didn't happen the way it was supposed to and the key never became Dawn, then yeah, she would technically die - but I don't think that's what's going to truly happen because we know Joss, and he would NEVER warn us like that if Dawn WAS going to die... so I think "something" will happen and Dawn may be the focal point for issue 37-ish but out of nowhere someone else will die. It would make Season 8 unforgettable, IMO if the Scooby's all lived and just saved the day, it would be a fun adventure but not truly carry any weight with me and I would look back at S8 as cool or fun... but if someone in the gang does die... then S8 would be real, it would mean that this battle was more serious and dangerous than other apocalypses because one of the ORIGINAL Scooby members has been lost forever. Just a theory though...

I think it's simple. Dawn is essentially a magical construct. Destroy the Seed, kill all magic, kill Dawn. The obvious pick for the betrayal would be Willow, who's so into magic that she wouldn't want it to go away. But I think in truth, it's Xander who's going to ally himself with the Master, trying to save Dawn from being unmade.

Wow... bad kitty! Bad kitty!
So, will Bad Kitty persuade Angel to make the wrong decision... in fact, persuade him to make the same wrong decision twice in a row?
I doubt Dawn is dead here... it would be a shame for her to go by getting slapped down by some nameless Mook Demon. Although that's how Anya died...
Looks like that really is the Master, and there may be an alliance of necessity coming up.

Liking the preview. A simple, non-convoluted explanation for how/why the Master lives. Hope that's not the end of Dawnie...
Allie mentioned in an interview that this gryphon creature can be seen in the "No Future For You" arc. Has anyone gone back and looked?
Also, does anyone else think this cover is a tribute to the classic "Superman holding Dead Supergirl" cover?

Wow. I really hope Dawnie isn't dead but it sure doesn't look good for her right now does it? I really don't think Xander could take another loss. I truly am worried what will happen to him/what he will do if he loses yet another woman he cares about. Not to mention the endless ways Dawn's demise could send Buffy off the deep end. Hopefully this is just a mislead and she is simply knocked out or something...

So, Faith has the Scythe. Is this meant to come as a surprise? We haven't seen it since "Retreat," except for that one scene last arc where we see it sitting in a corner somewhere when Giles mentions the god-killing artifact he was looking for.
Buffy lost it when the goddess dropped her, and it wasn't there when she woke up. Did Faith go pick it up (and leave Buffy lying there unconscious)? She couldn't have, since Angel had taken her prisoner. Does Buffy know she has it? Did Faith (and Giles) take it because they think they might have to kill Buffy with it?

Or the Scythe was there, somewhere (probably buried in the snow), and Buffy retrieved it after she landed (probably ungainly, in the mode of a face plant). Then it was stored in the hut/house that the Scoobies were regrouped at. I'm sure Willow could easily "Accio Scythe" (yes, stupid Harry Potter reference) it, after they got on board the ship.

In the Q&A after that issue came out, I specifically asked Scott if Buffy had retrieved the Scythe after she woke up in the snow. He replied "She did not." The decisiveness of that reply made me think it might be a plot point... like maybe she didn't, but someone else did.

And given important that Scythe is to the Slayer army, it's not something that is easily forgotten. But still, Scythe retrieval sounds easy enough.

Can't shake the idea that Faith and Giles took it for reasons of their own, especially in light of the hint that it's the god-killing weapon, and that Giles and Faith have their own agenda.
It's nice if Buffy trusts Faith enough now to let her have the Scythe. Makes sense, since Faith has to fight an army of demons and Buffy just has to face the Master, whom she has killed before without it.
BTW, is that Andrew there behind Faith, killing demons like a champ?

Or Twilights men found it in the snow while they are searching for slayers and bring it with Giles, Andrew and Faith to Twilight. Then Giles get it back while everybody busy with fighting demons. Buffy didnt need it anymore ,she got super powers

I'm worried by the fact that Faith has the Scythe now, and the Chen cover for #40 has Buffy holding the broken Scythe and crying.

From Batman and the X-Men to Mighty Mouse. frunosimpsons.blogspot.com/2010/03/parodias-y-referencias-43.htmlI think I will have to re-read the entire season; since Retreat I've been getting increasingly confused with each issue.

Actually, the most iconic covers of the sort are the ones with Fabio on them. Look at a random sampling of romance novels, and you'll find that pose on a lot of them.

Huh? I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm talking about comic books.

I was being snarky. The Supergirl cover may be the most iconic to you, but for most people, the cover with Dawn doesn't necessarily have to be a homage to any particular cover or genre. A point I was making is that the cover is very reminiscent of the covers of romance novels.
