So, yeah, pretty bland.
I think we all were a little set up to have big hopes for this issue, what with the impending doom for Dawn and Zander, and the betrayal of someone close to Buffy (which I totally, hands down, thought was Willow) and then the whole thing with Dawn was a joke and the betrayer was Angle -yawn- it's been done.
Also, I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way but - I'm sick and tired of Spike being such a wimp! He's useless! He is knocked aside EVERY TIME! I want to see him kick some ass - the likes of which we haven't seen since he beat up Robin in The Lies My Parents Told Me.

No, you're not the only one. I've also been feeling that way about Spike. It's funny, because at the start, he was pretty deadly with his fighting skills (killed two slayers and Harsh Light, anyone? The episode where he owned Buffy), but now, his fighting skills are laughable. And you think a vampire would get stronger and better in their skills as they get older. S2 Spike = deadly fighter. S5 Spike & onwards = useless fighter

S5 Spike & onwards = useless fighter Well to be fair Spike got lucky in at least one of those slayer fights. And in Harsh Light of Day he had the ring that made him invulnerable, assuming I'm recalling the right episode. I think people overestimate Spikes fighting skill and fail to understand that in the Buffyverse a character is only as dangerous as they need to be for the current situation. I think there is another message to take as well. Spike is out of his league when it comes to what is happening now. Everyone is out of their league except for Buffy, Willow, Angel and The Master.

Peroxide Princess, you forgot about the episode “Destiny” on Angel season 5 where Spike has kicked Angel’s arse. It could be symbolical – the free will (Spike) is stronger than the destiny (Angel). I haven’t read the issue yet, but reading the summaries, I’m assuming Spike is not able to fight Angel right now – Spike is a regular vampire while Angel is duped with these super-twilight powers. But even that Spike still tried to defend Buffy facing Super-Twangel fearlessness. If Angel was a common vampire I’m sure Spike would kick his arse again. I think the final battle should be between Angel and Buffy (and/or Willow & The Master)– they are with equal superpowers there (and it is a kind of opposite mirror image of their destructive space-frak). But I hope Spike will have some role in it… and he won’t be killed in the end.

He folks, I don´t have the issue now but I read the review und buffyfest and it leaves me with a question: Was Angel possessed all the time by the Twilight/Griffin or is this a development that takes place in Issue 38?

I just read some comments on whedonesque and I got the impression, that Angel was possessed all the time. Thanks for clearing it up.

I think Angel was possessed all the time. All these superpowers have been given to him by the Twilight Griffin aka The New Universe and it made him its servant. But from the very beginning Angel was thinking he’s doing that in the name of the “greatest good”– that’s why Angel fought against Buffy and her Slayers’s army, plotted Gigi, and killed a lot of innocents Slayers and people. And Angel did the whole world-destructive sex with Buffy under the Twilight influence again. I haven’t read the new issue either, but according the summaries the Twilight-Griffin finally turned Angel into his submissive thrall and into a kind of zombie. I hope the Twilight influence wouldn’t affect on Buffy this time… yeah, I really hope so! Buffy always was my hero, I hope she would resist this time of Twangel influence…

I got the impression that he was the zombie all the time, from the comments,
(scenario like: he heard the outcome, he wanted to prevent it and in that moment when Angel gave in, the Twilight-Griffin in non-physical form took over his body)
so that´s why I was asking.
But thanks for clearing it up. *karma*

I think we are supposed to be wondering about that still. I don't think it has been 100% confirmed how much control Angel had before his full possession in issue 38. It does appear however, that his level of free will is greatly reduced. It's either that or he has been playing Buffy since he realved himself and now he is showing his true intentions.
Also, I don't think we need spoiler tags, the issue has been out for over a day.

Okay.
That would be cool, if Angel is indeed controlled, even if it is just subconsciously growing over the time, because it would explain his growing will to kill people along the way. ( I know he did that before - Drogyn, etc. - but it would make the story round, like the icing on a cake)

I'm still hoping that this season concludes with happiness for Buffy and Angel after all they've been through together this season.

It doesn't sound like it'll end in happiness for anyone.

Yep... they're going to take us through a story that lasts nearly five years, and then give us an ending that makes us feel like crap. I can't wait!

I find myself waiting in some trepidation for the next issue which is supposed to make me feel 'ill' or 'devastated' and wondering if it is time to really call it a day with this series. But, I probably won't !

The pacing seems off somehow. It seems hard to believe all this horror is going to happen in the next 22 pages.

after a lot of moments to deliberate i realize that im ok with this issue.... its not the best one from the season but its an ok one.... the story didn't go too far, but it moved.... it just build up more hype to the next issue.... and it looks like its gonna be apocalip..... wait for it........ tical..... so lets wait till december 2(the probably date i'll read the issue.... but as far as this issue go, i think xander will simply leave and will take dawn with him.... i think angelus, ops, twilight will have THE fight with buffy(like season 2 - well the time that aired the episode was fanomenal for me), and probably willow will enter in the fight too... and giles, will make the ultimate sacriface and save the world... i think it will be the best way for the character to go.... lets see, lets see... and spike became the one with the good jokes??? bad bad bad... we need him to go smackin some evil monters(or twangels or psyco or kitty)

Well what I got out of the issue was that up until Angel and Buffy rejected Twilight Angel was doing everything he he of his own free will. Whistler pointed him in a direction and then he made his choice to (in his mind) help Buffy. In 38 The Griffin /Twilight is angry at mommy and Daddy so he possesses Angel to get to Buffy. And since the griffin thing was able to posses or speak through other people before, it is significant that he's now chosen Angel as his vessel. I think it's the super-powers. So I really do not think the Griffin/Twilight thing possessed Angel before. Plus Angel goes all green and googley eyed, showing the possessing taking place.
I do not see what Griffin/Twilight as Angel, did as a betrayal at all. It's not Angel. I think another betrayal comes up. I think to protect Dawn, Xander kills Giles and Buffy is forced to kill Xander, devastating her sister.
Maybe.
I think we definitely got the "I am off to sacrifice myself for the greater good" speech from Giles

I see a triangle of happenings in the finale: we have Buffy (and Spike) in the center while the three points are that Willow wants to protect the seed, Twilight (through Angel) wants to have the seed, and Xander will want to destroy it. Three possible outcomes that will totally put Buffy though a loop because truly and someone wil end up dead because of this. Who? Guess we'll see!
