Apparently at the end of the recently released Riley one-shot, there is a message that says:
"...the return of the Angel series to Dark Horse in late 2011, in tendem with our Buffy Season 9 relaunch"
I don't have the issue yet to confirm, but if anyone else can, that'd be great.
Thoughts?

This is good news, but... strange. Scott has made it pretty clear that DH didn't have much interest in doing non-canonical Buffyverse stuff anymore. Considering how worried we are about Joss's ability to give season 9 the attention it needs, how will he keep track of two canonical series?
Or is it more likely that Angel's story will simply be one of the parts of season 9 itself, and Buffy and Angel will no longer be treated as separate stories?
I hope that Brian Lynch's Spike series will be able to jump over to DH (or be re-started, at least). But if so, would he be able to bring along characters like Beck and Jeremy and Non and Betta George? Who owns those characters? Fox or IDW?

I said this in the Riley thread, but this is how I currently weigh in on the issue: Well, then... this could be a good thing. Or not. I guess it depends on loyalties. Me, I'm more concerned with good storytelling. If having both franchises under the same roof again will guarantee that, then fine with me. I'm assuming that switching in Mariah Huehner and David Tischner into the main ANGEL book was a calculated move to actually sync up the two continuities. Which would then allow S9 and ANGEL to run in the same continuity and time frame. Mucho confused am I...

Depressing.
Well goodbye Spike series...goodbye flashback comics...good bye mini series.
I know some people might be happy that Joss would have more of an influence...but in IDW Angel has always been it's own comic. Now it is just gonna be a mini-Buffy.
And not only that, but I think that IDW's Angel would have been a long ongoing...but Joss will want to end it in concurrence with Buffy and will prob end it before IDW would have had.
Please IDW - say it isn't so. I always loved the way IDW presented the comics, and the hardcovers, and how good they are with the fans....and just the whole damn thing. We would not have had ANY Angel comics for the last 5 years if it wasn't for them.
No After the fall....no Spike:Asylum...no Blood and Trenches....no ongoing...no episode adaptations. Over 80 Angel comics in the last few years that we would not have had if it wasn't for IDW and their love of this universe. I hope people do not forget that.

Wow, putting cart before the horse, literally, there's no way to know what DH could or would do with Angel. To say that it would become a mini-Buffy I don't think that's fair. We're talking over a year away! Is this news huge? Yes but let's not get too sad yet. Plus we will always have what IDW has done already. Hasn't everyone been complaining anout what they've done to Angel since ATF? uh yeah they have. So who knows what can come from this. Could it be worse? Just asking.

The one upside there would be if they used idw's angel to launch into dh's, that way they'd both be canon, we won't have read these stories for naught, and to see what other direction angel could possibly take.

I'm gonna call this as "Dark Horse is going to use Angel in S9 in some form of his own book for that story" until we get more information. In my opinion, we should not jump to conclusions based on a partial sentence.

My thoughts are this ... If Dark Horse can properly utilize Angel the SERIES and not just Angel the CHARACTER, give us a good story, art and writers, then I could warm to this.
There's no question that having BtVS and AtS under one roof will make things easier, from a continuity/story standpoint. I just hope they aren't reacquiring the rights simply to use Angel. By reacquiring Angel, that also means they are getting the show back, not just the character. Gunn, Illyria, Connor, Spike, etc. are all coming back. Give us a proper Angel series and not just the character interacting with Buffy again.
I think most will agree that Angel is much more interesting when he's the star of his own series.
Hopefully, with this sudden bomb dropping, Dark Horse will release some of their plans for the license in the coming months. Will there be an official launching of Angel Season 6, or will Angel simply be joining Buffy: Season 9?
IDW has done some great things with the Angel license over the years, and that's something I will always appreciate. With this move though, I doubt there is much hope for Spike to become a true ongoing series, as I don't see the logistics of Brian continuing with it at Dark Horse.
I just hope we learn more about what they're planning soon, and how IDW will wrap the license up on their end.

I agree with hellbound, at this point it's something to consider but not over analyze. Hopefully if the obvious implication is what happens, it will be done smoothly and respectfully. I can't imagine idw would let one of it's top selling books go without a good end.

I can't speak for Lynch but if Joss came to you and asked you to write for spike under a different publisher, wouldn't u do it? I of course am under the impression the artist' and writer are independently contracted.

That's from Chris Ryall himself at the IDW Boards. I leave it without comment.

[/quote Well ultimately I would think that would be Joss' decision. Who says they won't? Plus remember this is a business. A for profit business. If the interest is there, they just might. All I'm saying is give this info a chance. Let it sink in. I have other IDW titles I follow. Maybe the contract just expires and there's no renewing it. Hence the flurry of other Angelverse stories. They knew it was coming. Remember as much as we love this verse and everything in it, it is still a business.

I'll happily warm to this change if DH handles Angel properly. There is certainly cause to worry though. A lot can go wrong with this and a lot of good can come out of it. We'll just have to wait and see.

We'll just have to wait and see. Both these publishers love their fans. Whedon loves his fans, they would not exist, albeit for us. As fans go we are lucky they put so much regard in our opinions. So yes ,all we can do is wait and see and give all involved a chance to please us.

This is not jsut about Angel but about Connor, Gunn and Illyria etc Joss had Angel conveniantly forget about them (and his own son - the most important thing in the world to him!!!!) and just go back to the lovesick puppy of Buffy season 1. from 10 years ago!

I hope Brian Lynch is at least offered the chance to continue writing Spike at Dark Horse.
I see people on the IDW board already predicting that with Spike back at Dark Horse, Scott Allie is going to make sure he either gets dusted or just ignored, because he hates the character.
Why people seem to think Scott makes the decisions on what happens to characters in the canonical Buffyverse, I have no idea.

If this is news true I'm very excited I'm sorry IDW, but you've just messed up too many times. But I echo AndrewCrossett's statement I hope Brian Lynch gets to keep writing his Spike series, I love Brian's Spike. I'm hopeful he will as Joss Whedon let him use Willow and all.

I hate the character of Spike for hogging airtime in Bs6, Bs7, and As5. But still, I don't think Scott has that kind of power! People are so silly.

I haven't really been happy with how the Angel series has been handled post-After the Fall, but I respect IDW for continuing the series and giving all of Angel's supporting characters the spotlight. So yeah, whatever this news means, if in fact Dark Horse is getting the Angel property back, give us Angel the series, not Angel Buffy's bitch.
