This is my first regular post here.
I've been reading bits and pieces of Whedonesque articles for many years, but don't often get all the facts straight when it comes to Joss Whedon and his own personal opinions about his shows...except for "Buffy", "Dollhouse" and most especially "Firefly"
That is why I must ask these two questions, and I apologize if they are a little unusual:
Based on what the man has said over the years, including what his fellow producers / writers have also commented on, I've always had the impression that Joss Whedon simply never cared much for "ANGEL", as a series or as a character. Sure, fan response and franchise potential helped to give him his own series, but it's my understanding that Whedon's involvement with it was spotty at best. I've heard many times that Whedon was "talked into the Angel character" by David Greenwalt..Things like that don't exactly ring positive.
Look at his own episodes pre-season 5 that he contributed, and they seem like Joss is forcing his "Buffy" voice and tone into "Angel" characters and situations. They make for good comedy, but they stick out. Writers like David Fury have said he was never around much either. Then of course whenever I see ANGEL mentioned (IF it's mentioned at all, since most talk is about every other show he's done except this) it's often a throwaway comment or some cheap Spike/Angel comparison. To sum this up, my first question is basically:
What exactly does Joss Whedon think about "ANGEL"?
My second question is sort of a reaction to this impression I get:
It seems ANGEL is consistently ranked as lowest of all the Whedon shows by fans, and with the popularity of "Twilight", fans seem to consider Angel (the character, not the series) to be responsible (ie, to blame) for the Edward Cullen phenomenon - Angel is the template and is derided for it, though it seems that people who seem to make that kind of complaint have ignored his series and how much the character changed over time.
ANGEL, as a series was more a Tim Minear, David Greenwalt, Jeff Bell show than a definite Joss Whedon show in feel. Given (again, my perception) Whedon's lack of involvement it's no surprise that his overall personality and tone isn't as palpable as it is on Buffy, Firefly and I suppose Dollhouse. It makes me wonder if that's a part of why fans seem to dismiss or rank it so low so often. Whedon's own comparisons between Spike and Angel seem to help fuel that from what I've been reading over the years. Spike, despite being briefly an "ANGEL" series character was and always will be a "Buffy" series character.
Then of course is the (to me, pointlessly petty) idea that one is a spinoff of the other so it will never be considered equal to the original show. That one idea gave me a deep resentment for "Buffy" as a series for many years, because it wasn't even a comparison (I've always seen both shows as too different to compare, so I never do compare them) as it was a cop-out. For me the resentment came out of spite, nothing more. ANGEL is my favorite series, but I don't see either show as being better, or less than. As time has gone by, that resentment as completely faded and doesn't exist at all anymore. I've been marathon-watching Buffy for the second time, since I did so earlier this year and am in early season 4 again. When you're pretty much friendless, a show like this makes that isolation much more bearable, and that's what drew me to ANGEL in the first place - to say I relate to the title character is an understatement...though he is admittedly infinitely better looking than I could be even if I had the best surgeons. I've no problem admitting he's a beautiful man, because well, I'm not blind.
Anyway....To sum up my second question:
Are Whedon fans too loyal, in that if Joss doesn't appear to invest in something his more hardcore fans don't either? Sort of "In Joss We Trust", taken a bit too far? Or a spinoff question being because Joss' overall feel isn't as strong the fans sort of react to that?
I'm not saying/asking all of this to start arguments or anything of the sort, I just genuinely want to know.
Good night, all.
