I'm not sure this is enough to start a new thread about ... but watching "Waiting in the Wings," I feel there mus be many allusions that I'm not getting. Some of it seems to be drawn from "Phantom of the Opera," but not all.
I figure there must be at least one and probably several classic stories, probably 19th century romances, that Joss is mining for ideas here. But I don't have the kind of education that would allow me to name and trace them.
This idea of a theater director who uses magic to enslave/imprison his prima ballerina, for instance, or the endless corridors. They sound and look familiar, but I don't know where they come from.
Can anybody help me?

I'm not sure. From what I remember, the episode was written because of Amy Acker's dance background (which was never actually used for the episode), but now that I think of it, the idea of a cast trapped in performing the same show does seem like it's originated from an older tale. Now I need to go do some research

I think the plot may be loosely lifted from the movie The Red Shoes, which is an old ballet movie made in the 40s.
The plot of this movie is very similar to the ghosts' (that Angel and Cordelia encounter) story. A young woman dreams of being a prima ballerina. She is taught but controlled by her ballet director (I think it's her director, anyway) but has a torrid affair with a male ballet dancer, which incurs the director's wrath.

I've heard that it's based on The Red Shoes before but having never seen The Red Shoes I don't really know.
