I don't know if someone has already talked about this, but I wanted to bring up the topic of Sheperd Book.
I know not a lot of people really like him for various reasons. Some because Mal simple doesn't, others because religious leaders make them uncomfortable any and so forth. I honestly really liked his character because of how terribly mysterious he was. I was thoroughly disappointed when he died and we still knew nothing about him.
So I pose these questions:
What do you think he was hiding? Do you think he was a Sheperd to hide his past? Any any other general theories about him before the comics about him comes out.
Again sorry if this has already been talked about, and I really don't know if any information about it has been released already. I would love someone to point me in that direction if it has.

Yea it seems like that. But in that one episode where he was shot, (sorry can't remember it right now) whatever he showed them from his pocket seemed to make him a little more important then that. They almost seemed scared of him if I remember correctly.

And you call yourself Browncoats Joss and Ron Glass revealed 5 huge secrets about the so called "Shepard Book" 1) Dark Horse is releasing a new Serenity comic titled "A Shepards Tale" and will reveal a few of his secrets from his past. 2) A part of Book's body is not real, fake. Perhaps his weird hair. This is a good reason why he says that he is "more or less intact" 3) Also Joss said that Book found God in a bowl of soup whatever that means. 4) Shepard Derial Book is NOT his real name. It is the name of the person that he first killed. 5) Shepard Book or whatever his real name is best know for his biggest failure. Could his failure be with River escaping the acedamy, was he sent aboard the ship to bring her back or is his biggest failure during the war. Perhaps at Serenity valley was he on the alliance side? fireflytalk.libsyn.com/rss

No what it was is that people were always asking Ron Glass at conventions and reunions what Shepard Books secret was and he was sworn to secretcy, he alwasy got annoyed not being able to given away info on Books past so he asked Joss if he could give away some answers and there it was. I found out from a Firefly podcast Here is the link: fireflytalk.libsyn.com/rss

My guess is that he played a role with the Alliance similar to the Operative's. He was apparently important to the Alliance, but he wasn't a public figure or someone would have recognized him.

Maybe he's Twilight. That could be the big secret. The ultimate Buffy-Firefly tie-in!

I think I heard somewhere he was a crooked cop, though I don't remember if one of the cast or Joss said that or just random fandom speculation. Maybe he's Twilight. That could be the big secret. The ultimate Buffy-Firefly tie-in! ...Okay...Not going to happen...I know... LOL, to be honest that makes a lot more sense than some of the theories I've heard!

Yes he jokingly said it was Book's hair, my most interesting guess would be a fake leg or arm. I wonder what the whole "finding god in a bowl of soup2 thing is? The Shepaerds Tale comic comes out at the end of the year.

Okay am I completley lost/wrong or in Serenit: Better Days when Shepard Book is weilding the ship/robot thing that they stole, he gets a message that he tries to ignore put the machine puts it forworred anyway and it says that his "employment is terminated". What is all that about? Is this menat to be hints at what he was or who he was working for. Or am I completley losing it? I also really like the tease at Books hint of how he would spend the money (rich mobster with a cigar and tons of woman and then everyone just looks at him....."only kidding, I'd probably give it to the abbey"

Just watched Serenity. I think Book was an Operative. Links with the Aliance, very cool and collected but quick as a flash. Skilled with weapons, and he says exactly what Mal needs to hear in Serenity, probably from experience beyond just Religion. Only one thing will get you through this: BELIEF. Also exactly what the Operative has.

I don't think Book was as disliked as he was overlooked. Even though he was a regular character who contributed a good bit to the plot, he didn't really get as much screen time as the other main characters and he was only a secondary character in the movie. I thought he was a great character and when I finally finished watching the series, after a considerable amount of moping, my first thought was, "But what about Book?!"
I think he was a really ruthless, well-known Alliance member who killed a bunch of people and decided to change his name and become a shepherd out of guilt. Still, I guess we'll have to wait for the comic to find out (gah, I can't wait!).
