So far one of my favorite things about the Angel comic book is the art. The character likenesses aren't great a lot of the time, but the art is incredibley detailed and expressive. I've heard a lot of people say that they don't care for it, though, and more than a few have said that they hated it with a passion. I'm just curious to see what percentage of people dislike it.

Didn't like it at first but it grew on me. Angel's is better than Buffy's except for the painted covers.

If I had to choose great art or great story...I'd take the great story...but they gave us great art instead. (sorry, it's true)

Love the interior art. Franco is a master penciller. Also, his covers *rock*. I wish I could frame each of his covers, except for--perhaps--#2.
As far as the other cover artists, this is how I feel.
Tony Harris was okay. He's had the best painted covers so far which actually isn't saying that much. Angel and Spike's faces both looked a bit 'uglier' than they should, but it's cool. I'd much prefer him to the absolutely *awful* Andrew Robinson.
Andrew Robinson... ugh. His #3 cover was bleh, but it is a friggin masterpiece compared to his cover for #4. Could that have been ANY worse? I almost thought it was a joke when I first saw it. Why does Angel have clown feet? Why does Angel look nothing at all like Angel? Why why why? His #5 was an improvement, but still... neither Angel or Spike look like Angel or Spike. Angel looked like Bruce Wayne and Spike looked like Eminem.
Stephen Mooney: Sometimes great, sometimes "not so." He shades way too heavily. For his #6 cover, he shaded all the faces with his inks but left the clothes to be shaded by the colorist, which made the heads inconsistent with the bodies they're 'floating' on. His #3 and #7 covers were perfect, though.
The two main cover artists for the First Night covers ain't bad though. Good stuff, for the most part.

I think that the art really reflects the show's tone. Dark and awesome!

Interesting. I expected just the opposite response. It seemed to me like more people hated the art than liked it, but maybe that's just because the critics were much more vocal than then supporters. Or maybe the people who didn't like it originally changed their minds.

I'm really really not enjoying the art work. I know its fitting the mood of Angel but for me it can be too dark, likeness isn't the best iv seen, inking isn't brill and well the covers are just well ew drawn really badly for the covers i would have at least though they would have got the likeness of the carries down but they just keep disappointing me. :\

Although I know that some people don't like the artwork, and thats cool, to each their own and all that jazz lol. But I gotta admit that I really do like the artwork. I've enjoyed it ever since I read "Spike: Asylum" and "Spike: Shadow Puppets". To me it feels like its realistic enough to make recognize the characters, and yet cartooney enough to make it seem like a comic book.

I really don't like the way Illyria looks. Her face is so long and her eyes are so small.

I really like the art, I think the differences in style (between Angel and Buffy's art) is really reflective of the differences in the two stories. Angel's art really fits the tone of the series perfectly.
I'm really not a fan of the covers though... None of them have really sold me yet.

I agree... I like the Urro covers, HATE the interiors. I just with Jeanty did both Buffy and Angel, impossible I know

At first I wasnt sure about the idea of Urru doing the art. I liked his stuff on the Spike series, but sometimes it could be a bit too muddy. And when I saw how he drew the dreamAngel in Shadow Puppets I was dead set against him.
Glad to say I was wrong. The art has been great. Very atmospheric and has improved from issue to issue. He really hit his stride in issue 3 and hasnt looked back since.

It took me most of the first issue to get used to it, but now I love it! Like others have already said, the darkness and grittiness of it really fit the feel of the show, and the amount of detail is amazing. Really stunning stuff, and the fact that it has a great story to back it up makes it even better. Only two really minor things have bugged me about it so far: the length of Nina's hair (should be shorter), and that Urru occasionally draws a panel where a character has nearly round[/b] eyes -- O O -- making them look like someone caught in the thrall of a hypnotist. But it's when people are resorting to nitpicking at things like that that you know you're doing good work...

the length of Nina's hair (should be shorter) Maybe in the hell dimension, Nina is forced to suffer really bad hair. And really big breasts. MB x
