It's that time of the month....
Here are the submissions for Issue 5's contest! This is a part of the Angel: Interaction Contest, featuring award winning cover concepts for IDW Publishing's Angel: After the Fall comic series.
Choose one concept that you feel is the best. Consider how it would look on the cover of the comic, and choose wisely!
::The Submissions::
9700 - The characters I’m envisioning are Angel, Wes and Gunn. This would be more of a character-driven cover than action-packed. Let the readers feel for their favorite characters again. Sometimes you lose that personal relationship in comics as well as the emotional side of the battle so I’d love to see it taken back there with this one.
Obviously, as of right now it’s not clear what the battle lines are since I’ve only read the first issue but what I do know are that these are our core characters from the show. Wes and Gunn fought side by side with Angel for years, they were basically his family, and now they are merely shadows of the men they were. This, to me, would be the hardest fight. To look into the faces of those you loved and know that you are the only one capable of doing what has to be done for the greater good.
Angel is in the center with his former friends flanking either side. It’s a close up of their faces. If we wanted to really break some hearts, the burned, demolished remains of the Hyperion could be the backdrop for this cover symbolizing that there truly is no going back.
Angel’s expression would be that beautifully stoic mix of anguished self-righteousness he’s mastered so well. He knows he’s right, but he hates that he is. I’m picturing Wes as spiritually defeated yet determined to at the same time. W&H owns his soul but his humanity might still be up for grabs? And Gunn, his face is all fury. He’s a fierce force to be reckoned with and there is no sign of the man he used to be in those dark eyes. Whether any of the emotions the reader feels are true or could be manipulated will only be told inside the book.
9861 - My concept for the cover is based around Gunn's denial of being a soul-less monster, and his hate for Angel. Basically vampire Gunn(with vamp face) looking into a mirror and seeing his old self (possibly classic Gunn) and then above him a bunch of photos of Angel would be tacked onto a wall, and a stake would be sticking out of one of them to make it clear he's rather not happy with Angel.
9863 -
Connor with sword reflecting Angel! Picture Connor holding a sword...battle-ready. But with Angel's reflection on the sword (or even an enemy, or enemies).
9862 - Two sides, on one we have Angel and his dragon, on the other side Spike and Illyria. Spike the warrior has returned, he knows what he must do now. Gone are the silky pajamas, instead he's wearing easy to fight in clothes, the only old item he's still wearing is his black duster. He's twirling a wicked looking axe with his hand and his face is dead-serious. Angel has a look on his face that clearly says that he knew that it was going to come down to this. Illyria and the dragon are glaring at each other with anticipation.
9518 - Angel and Gunn are now on opposite sides. The cover shows their vamped out faces in a stare down, fangs bared, only side head shots visible on the cover, ready to attack each other any second.
9859 -
In the background we see L.A on fire and smoke covers most of the city, Angel's dragon can be seen in the distance blowing fire down at the streets below.
In the foreground is the roof of a court house which is damaged and a few flames burn on top.
The main focus of the cover is Illyria standing on top of the court house in the "Blind Justice" pose. She has in one hand a sword that has blood on it, and in the other hand she is holding two severed demon heads with blood dripping from them.
instead of a blind fold the wind has blown a section of Illyria's hair is
covering her eyes.
This cover would show that there is no more law and order in L.A and if you want justice you have to go out and get it yourself.
9615 - Gwen and Illyria are the focal points of this cover. Illyria, a vibrant Blue and Gwen an electrifying Red. These are two very powerful women – neither needing a weapon to dominate a battle – each with their own unique abilities. Could be that they are evenly matched. The question is – are they allies or enemies? Their positions/stances on the cover should leave us wondering just that.
9697 - Fighting for years and still trying, Angel will not stand down. Beaten and kneeling, in complete darkness, with light only dimly lighting him, we see a close-up of Angel with the focus on his hand. Struggling to get back up, he squeezes the stake he holds, with blood from his own hand dripping through. A symbol of strength, what essentially gives vampires life. Angel will not give up. No matter how painful it may get.
9783 - The cover is a close-up of Angel's head. There are various cuts and bruises on his face, and reflected in his eyes is Spike's vamped-out face, mouth open letting out a battle-cry.
9638 - Gunn is standing in a pool of blood, looking furious. In his still bloody hands he holds a Wolfram & Hart flyer. He is posed so that he is glaring up at the viewer!
8384 - It's a postcard. Where it once said 'Welcome to L.A.' it now says 'Welcome to Hell-A' (the LA being written over in red marker). The sun has been colored over with black, hints of red and orange are added to the sky, and demons/vamps have been drawn in. The corners of the postcard are ratty, torn, even charred a bit. Perhaps there is even a tear so big that one can see a glimpse of the front page of the comic... All I know is that L.A. isn't the tourist attraction it once was, and what better souvenir to commemorate this change than a distorted postcard?!
9842 - Spike an Angel face off once again. Angel, in human form, armed with a sword, looks down at spike with confident malice; Spike in vampire form, holding a stake, looks back at Angel with the fury of William The Bloody. Illyria stands in the background between them holding a battle axe. Does the outcome interest her? Will she step in to ensure that it turns out as she wishes? In the sky above them, descending into the ruined remains of Los Angeles, Connor arrives on the back of the dragon, ready to join the fight.
9539 - Angel stands alone in a dark lit ally. His face is tilted down looking and the puddle of water at his feet. Angel just ran his sword thought the water and created a line causing ripples in the puddle. The sword is also dipping water in the puddle causing ripples. As you focus on the water you can see images of both friends and foes on different sides. The faces in the water are hard to make out who is who? Who will choose to stand by him in his darkest and finest hour?
9113 -
Angel is walking down a street with his trench coat billowing behind him. He is in vampire face and snarling with anger at what the city he was supposed to protect has become. The huge palm trees lining the street are on fire with the flames reaching into the sky. The burnt out shells of cars also line the street. Some are overturned. From one of the destroyed cars a pair of red eyes peers out. Directly behind and above Angel sits the Hollywood sign, perched on its hill. Someone has crudely painted it a bright blood red.
9841 - We see Angel and Spike standing on a road, full length, with their backs to us. Each holds a weapon by his side. The road splits, forming two winding paths, a signpost marking the way. In the horizon the red glow of L.A., a city now plunged into hell, beckons them forward. Lines have been drawn, sides have been chosen, but which path will they choose to follow? Will they walk a path together as allies or separate and walk each path alone.
