WINNER: Congrats to Erin Waggoner. Erin is a long-time Buffy / Angel fans and an early and active member of the BCC. Erin's entry was voted number 1 out of all the entries submitted at SlayAlive.com. Erin's winning submission is:
"Closeup of Gunn and Gwen. Gunn is close to Gwen's neck, running the back of his hand down it sensuously as though he will kiss or bite. Gwen's hand is in front of her chest, electric sparks surrounding her fingers if need be...while she looks at Gunn from the side."
Erin's cover is being drawn right now and you should be able to view the finished art in a few days here.
Okay gang,
Check out all of the submitted concepts, then cast your vote for which you think is the best! The winning concept will be drawn by a professional artist and the lucky fan will win over $400.00 in prizes from TST!
Here are the submissions:
ENTRY 1 - I picture issue 8's cover having the newly vamped Gunn standing in the middle of his crew of homeless demon hunters all killed by Gunn's hand. His new demon soul showing no emotion but delight over those old friends he just drained.
ENTRY 2 - "Two “lovers” reunited.
Gwen is standing over a puddle of unidentifiable liquid, staring into her reflection, as if it holds the answer to a life or death question. Gunn stands behind her, no reflection giving him away, his arm half-raised and holding an axe, contemplating an attack. Gwen would appear to be oblivious to the danger, if it wasn’t for the small sparks that are emanating from her clenched fits. Does Gwen even know who’s behind her? Is Gunn ready to kill her, even if he had the power?
This night, they will not test each other."
ENTRY 3 - Gwen occupies the majority of the cover. We see her almost exclusively from the back wearing her favorite red leather, that allows most of her upper body to show. On her lower back we see a bleeding wound - it is the place where the L.I.S.A. unit that controls her power was once attached. She is holding the unit in one hand, her other hand is raised, gathering energy from the surroundings. Her face is in profile looking down at the unit in her hand. In the background we see a street scene of people who were going about their usual evening when LA was plunged into hell. People in shock and terror, fighting for their lives as demons are killing and dragging several of them off. Gwen has chosen her destiny - she has just ripped off the unit so she can use her power to help the people she once disdained.
ENTRY 4 - The cover features Gunn and Gwen. Gwen takes up one side of the cover, her side is bright with her looking up and powerful. Gunn is on the other side, which is dark, he is looking down and we see in the pool of water below him his lack of reflection as the background is reflected. Both characters are facing away from each other and you feel them pulling apart into their own paths and away from each other.
ENTRY 5 -
"That wound is mortal, you will last 10 minutes at best''
Gunn's fate is pretty much sealed he has very little time.
Time is the concept for my idea with the two faces of gunn at each end of an hour glass, one for good and the other for evil.
He is wearing the clothes from 'not fade away' and in the reflection of his axe you can see both the moon and sun and the sand or blood in the hourglass reprensents how long he has left before his worst nightmare becomes a reality.
As Gwen is featured in this issue there is a lighting storm in the back ground.
ENTRY 6 - Gwen sends a powerful lightening blot into Gunn's chest. She is shocked at seeing him as a vampire! He is visibly emotional at feeling his heart beat again (due to the electric jolt).
ENTRY 7 - Gunn stands in the middle of the street, in full vamp-face. The background is Hellish LA--sun and moon in the sky at once--but the focus isn't on the horrible demony street. The focus of this cover is Gunn, and the dead body at his feet. On the body, there are bloody fang marks on the neck. Gunn's mouth is a bit bloody too, and on his face is a mixture of horror at what he has become and sick satisfaction after feeding. It sort of mirrors the Wesley-centric cover for #7, as--like Wesley--Gunn is an entirely new person.
ENTRY 8 - This cover concept features Gwen and Gunn. Gwen is sitting on a roof of a building her crossed legs are dangling over the edge. She is staring at the moon up top. Down below there is an alley next to the building Gwen is on. Gunn is leaning against the building with his vamp face, smiling. In the shadows behind Gunn, you see the outline of a person (Gunns sire). Gunn is the center point of this drawing with the alley taking up most of the cover space. Gwen is simply the secondary character in the picture, but not too small enough to not know if it's her or not.
ENTRY 9 - Closeup of Gunn and Gwen. Gunn is close to Gwen's neck, running the back of his hand down it sensuously as though he will kiss or bite. Gwen's hand is in front of her chest, electric sparks surrounding her fingers if need be...while she looks at Gunn from the side.
ENTRY 10 - Gwen Vs. Big Bad!! An all around enormous-he-man of a demon: huge, overbearing, and ready for a brawl against a young woman who looks all-together normal (aside from the leather), who is mysteriously pulling off her gloves. Dude doesn't know what he's getting himself into!
ENTRY 11 - Well for my initial idea, I pretty much imagine Gwen, Conner, and Nina in the middle of a crowd of panicked people. With people running around them, I envision they are fighting some vampires as electricity is clearly flowing through Gwen's hands as she's clearly confident that she will win a battle against a few vampires. As Conner and Nina are busy taking on the vampires, Gwen is in a battle stance about ready to start her fight against a vampire, but off in the distance you see Gunn diving towards the unsuspecting Gwen as Gunn's face is "vamped out" so to say. Sort of a sneak attack type of atmosphere.
ENTRY 12 - Cover is split in three equal panes, with an image of Gwen at the top aligned to the right with blue streams of lightning across to the left her, Angel centered in the center pane w/ the flames of hell (or the dragon) around him, and Gunn (aligned left) in the third panel half-conscious with blood filling most of the rest of the panel (It's always got to be blood) including some visible on his lips/mouth to maybe be after he has fed/before he rises.
ENTRY 13 - The cover is consumed by Gunn's face, there is hardly any background, very dark, very shadow. His mouth is open, fangs bared, and from his mouth is a rush of flames. Within the flames, there are outlines of other characters, Gwenn, Angel, Illyria et al. fiery but undetailed, a hellish representation of Gunn's fury.
Within Gunn's eyes there is the glint of the fire's reflection, almost tear-stained, a blend of grief and anger.
Oh, and maybe some blood. Always blood
Okay so there you have them! Please choose one, and vote! We waited a few extra hours to make sure we got all the entries.
