I was inspired by this thread about if Buffy is a "girly" show or not. I want to see how our community is broken down by gender.

*checks* Yep, I'm all male I don't think of it as a "girly" show, but the fanbase as a whole is probably more female orenitated. And I think more than anything, it's because there a lot of young adolescent males who are simply put off by strong female charatcers. tsk, I pity them

I don't think Buffy is a girly show. I think it's for everyone, male or female. Hanna Montana is what I call a girly show lol...

more guys than girls so far, that's interesting, considering the discussion.
I am, of course, male.

I kinda figures that there would be more men.
Also, while choosing members for the best male and female posters for hte slayalive awards, I am suprised to learn the gender of some posters whom I assumed were the opposite sex.

For the longest time, all the fans I knew were female. However, I'm quite unfortunate that not many around me (outside of the internet) enjoy the show. So the lack of diversity was to be expected with the few I knew.
As I got into online forums, I was stoked when I met so many male fans. And from such various age groups.
I was thrilled when I went to the Sing Along last April and saw the diversity in the crowd. It was awesome.

Female here, but an incredibly tomboyish female who loathes rom-coms, adores horror and violence on TV and movies, dreams of owning a Bugatti Veyron and tends to fancy the female actors more than the males. So I doubt that helps in anyway. I expected most of the fans to be female, as it started off all high-schooly, but I think the men are in the lead at the mo.

I am wondering how accurate this poll would be. Maybe it is just me but I am inclined to think that a male would be more likely to join a fan forum on the internet.

It's not jsut me then I don't really know wha tmakes me think that. Maybe because the whole G4/gaming croud are usually male majority. Sacred Simplicity has put another idea in my head. Maybe the next poll should inquire about sexuality. (Not saying anything about Sacred, just that her post got me wondering about sexuality in the Buffy fan community).

I think guys are just more likely to sit at the computer to discuss a television show. Sacred Simplicity has put another idea in my head. Maybe the next poll should inquire about sexuality. (Not saying anything about Sacred, just that her post got me wondering about sexuality in the Buffy fan community). Go for it. But leave lots of options!

Male and all..
I never really though about if there was more female fans or male fans to Buffy... just always though it attracted both sex.

I'm in several groups on Myspace... possibly too many! I even moderate one. *lol* There's a lot more female fans that are present with the forums I'm involved in there. However, since I started there a year or two ago, the male fans have increased a lot.
Another aspect of diversity that I really enjoy is the ages of fans. It's fun getting to discuss Joss' work wiith teens, people in the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, and beyond! The oldest I've spoken with is a women in her 60's! Joss' work has no barriers!!!

I'm a dude. LOL!
Anyway I think that there might be more female fans. But that's not to say guys don't appreciate the show!
Also, I agree with meg that there are fans of all ages. I love that and think it's wonderful.

My Dad is turning 60 this May. He's not a fan of the show, but I tried to get him to go to the Sing Along with me. Since my Dad likes some musicals, I thought I'd convince him. Unfortunately, it didn't work. *lol* I went by myself because none of my friends are fans. It wasn't an issue at all. I made friends immediately... that's the beauty of Whedon fans. My Dad's the coolest. He retired from teaching, but now is a substitute. One day he got a call to fill in for the Librarian. I tried to convinve him to pretend he was Giles for the day... he got really into it. It's a funny story I wrote in a blog if anyone is completely bored and wants to read it! *lol* I think if anything, I could get him into Firefly. I used to catch my Mother watching Angel when it aired on TNT in the evenings. But if I ask her her now, she denies it. *lol* She'd watch in such confusion because she hadn't watch Buffy. She was extremely confused why a dectective was a Vampire. She stopped asking me about things because I'd feel the need to talk and talk and talk... kinda like now. Sorry I went off subject! I hope my life long mate, whatever their sex, is a fan of Joss' shows. It'll be much easier meeting a women. But outside of being online, I think it'll be much harder meeting a male fan. But that's the beauty of Cons and other events, right?!?
