emerging from the dream, realizing that those simple times she yearn for, can still be possible because the people she love are still around. It is definitely nice to 'go home' once again. Good point. The ending scene was very touching. I think "going back" hopefully helped Buffy to realize that though times have changed, the same people she loved are still there with her. Hopefully this new found revelation will help to solidify the bond between the scoobies.

i don't know if this has been noticed yet, but if snyder is here, the story take place after "the puppet show", and is not taking place between "angel" and "i robot, you jane" like jeph loeb said...

I loved this issue. It was great to see the potential of the Animated Series.
However, I do have one favorite panel. I don't remember what page (I don't have the issue right in front of me). When Buffy is trying to remember what Angel said and it shows him saying something like, "you are beautiful." Then Buffy goes, "he didn't even say that."
That was something I could totally see Buffy in the tv show doing in season one.

Oh, good point. I didn't notice that. At any rate, I'm glad the Snydman made his appearace, lol I also didn't notice Buffy saying she was a Freshman until I read it the second time. you would think that Joss would have caught that one...

i don't know if this goes better in issue #21, but you know how on the very last page of #20, the one after "Slaying the Critics" where it says:
"She Laughs, she loves, and sometimes... Harmony Bites. her hot new reality show on MTV"
is it gonna be a story of her "reality show"? that would be awesome!! i never liked harmony, especially not in season 5 of angel, but i kinda feel like i'm gonna like this issue!
also, i was surprised not to see Jenny Calendar.

I absolutely loved this standalone issue, really got me worked up after reading it, I'm still a bit jittery now. I loved how we start off with Buffy slaying all the demons with no one backing her up, no one there to help her -- making her feel even more alone. I like the fact that she's too tired to come up with any new puns and that she probably hasn't sleeped this entire comic series. I rekon if anything was going to kill her it would be the lack of sleep.
Moving on ... A very nice Buffy and Xander scene as they talk about Dawn and the whole giant robot monkey thing, something very Joss Whedon like (even though its not written by him).
The drawings are totally awesome and made me laugh with some of the funny expression the characters had. It's good that this issue wasn't dark like the rest of the season so far and I was happy that we saw Giles. It's always good to see Angel again but Buffy was slightly - how can i put this - a total bitch towards him just because she wanted to act like she did after the episode "Angel" or during it, whatever.
The fights scenes were short but perfectly done, the stretched out panels were impressive, and the way the dream ended was hilarious. BUffy screaming out "OMIGOD! Look at you, will! You're all magicky and gay no!" made me laugh and the final full page panel made me think about the final episode of SEASON SEVEN where Dawn asks "yeah Buffy, what are we gonna do now?"
I give this issue an 8 out of 10 for these reasons.
1. The way the characters were written stayed true to the first season of BUffy and how they're language was.
2. A good laugh.
3. Last of all the way it played with my emotions, each and every one of them.
In my opinion this would have been a great four issue series story arc filled with the animated BUffy like style. I would have enjoyed it as a longer story arc as I feel as though some of it may have been a bit short cut - like the last page of the animated bit - it would have been cool if she got to the party and interacted more with her friends - and last of all, the snyde remark to Cordelia ...
Now people have said that they think it was offensive and mean to her character and Cordelia is my fav character on Angel, the death remark was to cheer Willow up. I saw this snyde remark as the way they used to react to Cordelia's insults with their three - way friends bond, this one just being Buffy and WIllow. So please stop with the, "What a bitch" and stuff because it really wasn't that mean.
8/10.

Do you think Joss will change "freshman" to "sophomore" for the TPB release?
They usually change lines sometimes.

Good issue. Not a great issue, but a nice, solid one. Light and fun and kinda silly. Sort of S8's version of "Band Candy" or "Superstar". The art, which I quite honestly hated in the preview, turned out to be fine in context--having a few pages of Jeanty's awesome-as-usual work leading into it certainly helped. (The only thing about Wight's work that I still hated was Giles, but thankfully, he wasn't in it much.) The storyline, dialogue, and (obviously) the look of it were much more in line with a cartoon than the live-action TV series, but since the whole thing was a dream, that worked perfectly well. My only real negative about this issue, as has already been mentioned, is that it didn't advance the S8 storyline at all. Oh, well... Oh, and even as sarcasm, I didn't care for Giles "I wonder what Harmony will be wearing" line. Wasn't really in-character for him, circa S1. It was more like late-S3 before he was throwing quips like that around. But that's probably a nitpick...

My only real negative about this issue, as has already been mentioned, is that it didn't advance the S8 storyline at all. Oh, well... I definitely see that point, El D. But I think this episode was the necessary light break between the drama of ToYL and the upcoming havoc of the Predators and Prey arc. It's giving us insight into her mindset. I think when we look back at the season as a whole, we'll more greatly understand the role this issue played and how it fits perfectly into the greater story. I suspect it's going to give Season 8 a much needed balance and diversity. It didn't really push the plot forward true, but that was already a problematic venture when it was set in a dream world. The only thing that *could* happen in this issue was to shift Buffy's internal view of the world. I think the most important thing we learned from this adventure is all about Buffy. The Wish didn't push the plot of Season 3 forward - at least at first appearance it didn't. It was a dimension that showed us 'what could have been' and then was immediately reset at the end. It seemingly didn't relate to the greater seasonal plot arc, but by making Anya human, the Scoobies got firsthand intel on someone who'd witnessed a real Ascension. Buffy's tired, her will flagging as she keeps trying to save her world, so she wants to escape. Once in her dream world, she realizes things were always hard and she comes back to the present with a renewed will for her mission. Her doubts were allayed and she's going to keep her mouth shut about Fray's future. She's putting everything, the fate of the world and the fate of the future itself, all on her shoulders. NOT a good idea when she's always drawn her greatest strength from her friends. The problem is that she's still acting like she's alone. This mindset is going to lead her down a dark path. I think Buffy's renewed determination to save the world, her world of slayers, and her belief that things are just the same as they always were will be relevant to the future events of the season.

Oh, I agree, Em. In fact, I remember when the premise for this issue was first announced, another prominent member here (who has since been banned) was very critical of it, and I made the point that there were some great episodes of the series that didn't necessarily "push the season's plot forward", at least in terms of the Big Bad and his/her scheme. But tho I didn't love this issue, I enjoyed it, and that was about the only negative to it that I could really come up with (well, that, and the previously-mentioned stuff about Giles' appearance and dialogue ). Not just this issue, but this season as a whole will probably be more enjoyable once it's all over, and we can go back and read it all in a relatively-short span. Issues like this one, or "The Chain", or the first couple of chapters of each arc (which are usually more character-based than action-packed) will be easier to appreciate when you're not having to wait 4-5 weeks for the next installment. People who aren't reading S8 as it's being released, like we are, and only come to it after the whole thing is done, will probably have a much different take on it than we do...

Has everybody noticed this issue started with allmost the same phrase as #1? It's nice symbolism:
#1 tells us after changing the world, the world becomes different. #20 tells us at the end that although the world has changed, Buffy's life hasn't.
BTW, is it Harmony next to Cordelia in the school? They really want to introduce her again for #21!
Happy Holidays

I get a little excited whenever I see Willow. Normal Willow, anyway.
Hopefully we'll see some more of her during the next arc. Wait, there aren't any issues with her are there? There's Buffy & Andrew, Harmony, Giles & Faith, and Xander & Dawn. Urgh. Oh well. I just need more Willow.
And yay for Xander wearing normal clothes!

I honestly wasn't that impressed with this issue. It was nice to see Buffy back in her high school years but I wish they would've put a storyline back there.

I liked this issue quite a bit. I enjoyed the scene where Buffy was trying to remember what Angel had told her, I thought that I was priceless. But I did like how this issue pointed out Buffy's mission: She still has a world to save. She knew it wasn't easy, but she didn't exactly know what she was signing on for when she activated all of the potentials. And to top it off Twilight's trying to make her lose her focus. In issue 11 ('A Beautiful Sunset'), I believe it was that one, Twilight was trying to shatter Buffy's moral certainty... But this issue shows that she still isn't finished with her job, she still has a world to save.

Ohhh, I loved this issue. The art was fun and awesome, and I liked how we get a little break in between 2 arcs. And seeing the characters back in their sophomore year made me happy, but sad at the same time. Overall, it was a nice read.

I don't think I've actually commented on this issue yet. Overall I thought it was a great issue, a little too short like many people think, but you can't hold that against Jeph Loeb. I loved the framing story by Georges Jeanty, it was great! It was nice that we have gotten to see a substantial amount of the actual action of the animated part in the pilot clip that leaked earlier this year. I think some people are being a little too critical of the dialogue, Buffy saying she has a "Freshman year body", I think she was talking more about the situation than the specifics of what time she was living in. Giles' comment on Harmony was funny, and for me did seem like something he would say in the earlier years, he was snarkier and more sarcastic back then. The art was cute, I loved Buffy in the graveyard scenes, so adorable. This issue ranks up there with the best standalones like The Chain and Anywhere But Here.

I really feel that this issue was meant to address the prevailing excitment arising from the leaked four minute clip of the animated series that never was. I believe that the issue adequately satisfied our desires to see this project brought into the limelight and that the fact it doesn't prolong the season 8 plot is hedged by the fact we will be receiving issue 21 relatively soon. Accept it for what it is and be thankful for what we were fortunate enough to have received.

What a great issue! I loved the simplicity of it. I think that having the odd stand-alone story that goes completely off-track is a nice touch to the season, and sums up what Buffy is really about: being versatile. I loved the artwork by Eric Wight, very impressive. I loved the season 1 dream story theme as well. Very nice ending too...very touching. Can't wait for Harmonic Divergence!
