I like the idea of Dawn being able to shape-shift. Like maybe her subconscious has turned her into a giant? That would be GREAT. Like she had sex so she feels more grown up. Her subconscious takes this literally and suddenly she's a giant. Now she's that half-horse, half-human thing. Love this idea! Its better then her having Telekinesis.

There's a TFAW ad now at the top of the page (sometimes) for 8.18, and shows a portion of Jo Chen's cover with the caption "Dawn's bizarre changes continue in the 'Time of Your Life' story arc". I never doubted that it was Dawn, but for those who were still unsure, that oughta pretty much settle it...

I love the cover art for this one, but it's so confusing.
Guess we'll have to wait for the Time of Your Life arc to have it cleared up.
BTW, speaking of the Buffy/Fray arc...months and months ago, when I first starting reading the comics and discovered Fray, I had a dream about Buffy in Fray's time. It was weird.
Imagine my shock and surprise when I see the cover art for Issue 16. I was thinking HOLY CRAP!!! My dream came TRUE!
So, yeah, been waiting for this for a long time. Hope it doesn't disappoint.

It would be cool if Dawn could shape shift, but I like her just how she was...well, really I never liked her at all. xD

The more I look at it the more I hate the variant cover. It's probably my least favorite cover so far of the series.

I like this cover ( hell I like anything Jo does ). I'm positive thats Dawn; the only question is how did she change. I have a theory that she used the Scythe to give herself strength of a Slayer ( because Buffy now has 500 new little sisters) and the spell backfired. As for a metaphor I think she is just finding her identity like every teenager. And the variant... definitely Dru. I would like to see just one arc without special guests!

I really like this cover. The lighting is amazing. It's also nice to have Dawn on a cover again. Hopefully she starts to have a more significant storyline.

You know,i really like the variant cover for this. I've preferred the variants for the past few issues. Completely agree. I feel like the Jo cover came out of Lord of the Rings. Don't get me wrong, I love Jo's work, but it just looks A LITTLE to fantasy-ish for my taste. Also, I looked at the covers before the arc started so I didn't like that it gave away that Dawn is a centaur BEFORE I knew. I thought she was going to turn in this issue and the cover would have ruined it. I'd still probably get the original cover because it fits in with all my other comics better (I have no variants).

Looks like Dawn turned into the centaur in Issue 16, and the prompt for this issue (18) says she goes through another bizarre change. Consistent with the "bad things come in threes" and "thrisewise" theory, although I think we have absolutely zero clues as to what she'll be changing into.
Just to straighten things out in my head... We know Dawn was dating Kenny the Thrisewise and "taking things slow". She never slept with Kenny, but she did sleep with his roommate, which for all we know is just a normal guy. Seems to me that this whole changing shapes curse is a vengeance spell from Kenny... I hope this whole storyline shapes into something more than Dawnie changing shapes.

Consistent with the "bad things come in threes" and "thrisewise" theory, although I think we have absolutely zero clues as to what she'll be changing into. I don't think she is going to change again for awhile. The description says Dawn's "gone" through another change, which is past tense. Besides, the cover is Dawn as a centaur. I think she's going to stay as a centaur for as long as she was a giant. I'm really getting more into her story and I'm hoping we'll find out more about HOW it happened.

as we saw with "massive hit" referring to the loss of Renee, the wording in the prompts may not be the best.
but your point is noted, and i think it could be one or the other, either Allie was referring to the change in Issue 16 or referring to another change in Issue 18.

I don't think she is going to change again for awhile. The description says Dawn's "gone" through another change, which is past tense. Besides, the cover is Dawn as a centaur. I think she's going to stay as a centaur for as long as she was a giant. I think Hitnrun is right and Dawn will be a centaur for more than just Issue 17. "Dawn's gone through another change" sounds like the issue will be dealing with Dawn's transformation to centaur more than throwing her into another transformation after only 1 issue. I think there's special meaning to be attached to Dawn transforming after having so much character growth in Issue 15 and her transformation into a centaur won't be rushed to the third stage before it has been explored and Dawn has shown more personal growth. At first, Dawn's attitude at being a giant was to act depressed and sullen. In 'A Beautiful Sunset' she was shown having fun and interacting with the slayers in the castle, no longer hiding away like she was in 'Long Way Home'. Finally in 'Wolves at the Gate IV' Dawn is shown accepting her being 'Big' and using it advantageously, showing her courage and defeating the MechaDawn version of herself that represented her past childish whiny attitude and superficiality. I think Kenny the Thricewise's hex on Dawn was shown as a direct response to her selfish and immature treatment of him and their relationship when she slept with his best friend Nick. His revenge was to put her through these three stages that force her to grow up. The first stage made Dawn accept that she was "Big" or that she was an adult. The second stage is a bit more complicated to decipher, but centaurs most commonly symbolize the battle between man and beast within a person. More specifically in Dawn's case her struggle to control and own her sexuality. I think every male fan can agree that the first panel of Centaur Dawn was an extremely sexual image and Xander's reaction to her change further suggests the direction of Dawn's path. So in the first stage Dawn has accepted she is an adult. In the second stage she will master her sexuality and I wonder how she will do this and with whom (Xander seems the most likely bet). So Dawn is maturing, accepting her adult role and her sexuality. What could the third stage be? Mature love? Perhaps most interesting of all is the need for Dawn to have such an intricate storyline just to have her be finally shown as an adult. This journey seems as equally invested in dramatically changing the audience's view of Dawn as it transforms Dawn's character. The magnitude of Dawn's journey seems to rightfully suggest that Dawn has been viewed as a childish annoyance for too long and the audience is getting a major overhaul in order to change our view of her. So Dawn joins the group of Buffy characters to be lifted to greater heights after this change to the comic medium, standing alongside Dracula and Kennedy.

Emmie, that's the best reasoning I've heard yet to explain Dawn's story. I've gotten tired of it, and keep wondering "Why doesn't she just tell Willow what she told Xander?!?", but if there's some important emotional character growth for her at the end of this long tunnel, then maybe it'll turn out to be worth it. With Joss, you expect there to be a character-based reason for every storyline, but they've been playing this as nothing more than a joke (a not-very-funny joke) for so long now, and Dawn always got short-shrift when it came to character-development on the show, so.... *shrug* Guess I've been skeptical that this was really going anywhere important.

That's some solid analysis, Emmie. I'm not sure I'd agree insofar as you've tied Dawn's putative growth arc to romance/sexuality, but I get why it would make sense if Kenny did it.
I don't think I'd like the Xander-as-Dawn's-hookup thing. While Jeanty did say at a convention that Xander will have some kind of fling coming up, if he and Dawn slept together and it *wasn't* the start of something serious, both Buffy/Xander and Xander/Dawn as romantic storylines would take a real hit to their likelihood.

I don't think I'd like the Xander-as-Dawn's-hookup thing. Well, I don't really see it happening at all (think people are reading way too much into that one line from #16), but if it does, it probably won't be anytime soon. Maybe she won't be a centaur for 15 issues, which is how long her giant-ness lasted, but 10 issues might be a reasonable guess for it, with her third transformation maybe lasting another 10, and by then, there's only 5 (or so) issues left in the season. I'm sure there are sites you can go to online if you want to see a guy gettin' it on with a horse, but that's not my thing, and I don't want to see it--or even have it implied--in my monthly "Buffy" fix...
