Here we are! The final contest!!
We have so many entries this time around, it's gonna be tough to choose!
Let's get started:
Entry 1 - Instead of giving a big blow-out for the cover, I thought the cover could pay homage to how far ANGEL as a person and a story has come since "Not Fade Away." The series ended with our heroes defeated in the alley, ready to go into a battle they couldn't win. The SLAYALIVE/T&S/BCC covers started with a repeat of that image. Since this is the final cover, I thought it would be great to give a repeat of that same image. However, in that rainy alley is Angel, Spike, Illyria, Wesley, Connor, Gwen, Lorne, Goo, and Nina. They stand for togetherness, and it'll be a great image to symbolize how far they've come.
Entry 2 - Although it is clearly a Los Angeles hell-street, we see Angel, on horseback, in the clothes he was wearing in Pylea. The vampires around him are pure demon, as Angel was there, and are circling him for the kill, Gunn clearly in control. Anyone helping Angel (Spike, Wesley, etc.) does not see it this way, but Illyria's eyes are wide with horror. She sees her "handsome man" about to go down and feels she must do something.
Entry 3 - With the re-introduction of the Hyperion Hotel in issue 11, I feel that it would be fitting for it to be the setting of the issue 12 cover. First, I was thinking a stand-off with Angel and Gunn in front of the Hyperion, but that's been done. My idea is to have the whole gang together (including Fred, sans Illyria) inside the main lobby of the hotel. Wesley, Fred and Gunn (human) sitting on the round couch in the middle of the lobby, laughing. Angel and Connor standing by the "check-in" desk, having a sort of "father-son" conversation, smiling, maybe rough-housing. Lorne would be standing by the stairs with a martini, watching them all, happily. Sort of a look back at better days (no Serenity pun intended). I'd like to bring Cordy onto the cover as well, probably next to Angel and Connor, but I'm not sure how well that would fit in with the story line. But, hey, anything goes, right?
Entry 4 - In the foreground, Gunn standing turned to the side looking straight out at the reader over his shoulder, a half-smirking evil grin on his vamped-out face. In one hand he has a lit Zippo lighter and on the ground are empty gasoline cans. In the background, the famous HOLLYWOOD sign and the Hollywood Hills are ablaze, smoke rising into the night sky. The predominance of fire and darkness in this cover concept are meant to contrast with the official cover of the rainy blue alley with Connor holding an injured Angel - rage and destruction vs. sorrow and communion.
Entry 5 - My idea is the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Gunn has his vamp face on and hood up and is on winged horseback like the one Groo rode in issue 4. Behind him in the distance are 3 of Gunn’s helpers on identical horses each holding an item, Bow & arrow, sword, scales and Gunn has a reapers scythe symbolizing he is the bringer of death. IS THE END REALLY NIGH???
Entry 6 - Angel is very beaten up. He is bleeding and obviously hurt and having a hard time standing. He holds his sword to at his side, barely able to hold on to it but hasn't dropped it or given up get. He is looking at Los Angeles falling apart in front of him. We see buildings collapsing and burning. But in the distance within the destruction we see a small beacon of light. This light is the hope that keeps Angel going.
Entry 7 - Disqualified
Entry 8 - My concept for the A:ATF 12 cover is everyone dancing, kind of like the episode “Waiting In The Wings”. The background is a stage with a curtain in the back. The couples I would like to see in order (from left to right): Connor and Gwen (she is wearing gloves), Wesley (transparent) and Winifred, Illyria and Spike, and Nina and Angel. I want Fred’s and Illyria’s body to touch one another to show they are still “together/connected”. Angel is unaware that Gunn is right next to him pulling back the curtain with one hand and holding a stake in the other, ready to attack. Gun is wearing the “phantom” mask, revealing only his scarred eye. At the bottom has Lorne, only seeing the upper part of his body, singing and holding a mike. And everyone is wearing formal dress clothes.
Entry 9 - The cover shows Gunn holding a snowglobe souvenir of LA upside down, showing the metaphor of how he has the town in his hands and he's going to turn it upside down!! How awesome is that??!!!!
Entry 10 - We are looking down on Angel's body being passed to his comrades, his sword following close behind. We can see in the background a multitude of LA's citizens demon/human alike, that were passing him to them.We can make out Spike, Lorne, Illyria/Fred, Connor, Nina, Gwen, their hands held up to receive him.
Entry 11 - Lorne is playing the piano, surrounded by Angel, Illyria and the other major characters of After the fall. Perhaps they’re all dressed up, holding drinks. Perhaps they’re dirty and torn from battle, holding bloodied weapons. One thing they all have in common tough, is that they are all enjoying the music, content smiles playing on their lips.
Entry 12 -
Team Angel, in a homage to the famous team walk that we always got in the credits, i see everyone following connor as he carries Angel down the streets of L.A. followed by the gang looking ready for a fight as Wesley looks on from a short distance and the Dragon covers most of the background roaring at the city of LA as a warning to HelL.A, also i thought a nice touch would be to add the leaves that we saw Cordelia send when Wesley tried to contact her, Good old Team Angel including Cordelia in a way lol.
Entry 13 -
The whole group standing there. Angel in front. To his right. A normal season 5 Wesley and Fred are holding each other looking out at whatever is in front of them. Also Gwen after she lost her power. To his left is Connor before he got is memory back. And Gun before he was turned. spike without his coat just in a black shirt. Behind them as if shadows is there current forms. Same way. Gun as a Vamp. Angel vamped out. Wesley in his suit and glasses holding Illyria. Spike in his duster vamped out. Gwen holding her electric hand. You get the idea. Mostly its meant to mean. Before La went to hell and after. Behind them could even be LA is two halves the hell have and the original LA. Something to that idea.
Entry 14 - My idea can be summed up in 3 words: Gunn sires Angelus. I envision Gunn turning the now human Angel into our favorite soulless demon, Angelus. In addition, I think it would be cool that, as Angel drinks from Gunn, L.A. is released from Hell.
Entry 15 - It's a wake and on the tabletop are pictures of Cordelia, Angel and Doyle. In front of the frames is a card for Angel Investigations that reads "we help the hopeless." We see through the windows in the background that the fires of L.A. meanwhile are towering.
Entry 16 - The cover is a very simple, singular image. The whole cover is a tombstone w/ the Angel logo being the name on the tomb, w/ the dates of his life, the words "Beloved Father/ Devoted Friend" and lower "He Couldn't Save The World."
Entry 17 - As Los Angeles burns in the background with scenes of hell showing various slugs, bugs and various flying Hell Beasts, Gunn's crew has Angel surrounded having taken him by surprise, while Gunn off to the side in Vamp mode is looking up at the bright multi-colored sky, while he paces, we know his decision is forthcoming.
Entry 18 - I envision a closeup of Angel's face, it is slowly turning to dust. The right half of his face is normal while the other half has become almost skeletal. His eyes are cast downward and from his right eye a single tear rolls down his face. In the tear is a small reflection of the old gang. Angel, Cordelia, Fred, Wesley, Gunn, Lorne, and Connor all smiling/laughing in the better days that came before 'the fall'. He is crying for what once was and for what should have been.
Entry 19 - We see someones back, standing in front of a tree, peaking over the side of it at three people in front of a fresh grave. One of them is flicking a cigarette and another is throwing a rose. We only see their backs and can't quite make out who's hiding in the shadows. Could it be Angel? Heroes never die.
Entry 20 -
Close-up (very close on Gunn's eyes (you can barely make out the vamped face surrounding the eyes you are so close). In Gunn's right eye, Angel human face is reflected. In Gunn's left eye, Angel's vampire face is reflected. Simple, and powerful for a cover. The reflection in Gunn's eye of Angel's "vamped" face shows that in Hell-A, the rules change.
Entry 21 -
In the foreground you have Gunn standing alone in the middle of the street. In the background you have LA engulfed with flames. Slightly behind Gunn you have Angel who looks badly beaten, trying to get enough strength to stand up. Will Angel be able to save the day like he had done so many times before or will Evil finally win out and slay are champion.
Entry 22 - The main visual element is a large snow globe -- A big fancy glass one, not one of those dinky plastic ones. It's got a little plaque on its base that says "Los Angeles" and inside is the distinctive skyline of LA (US Bank Tower, AON center, etc.) Of course, there would be little bits of snow swirling around, the way snowglobes do. Behind the globe is Gunn's vamp face. He's gripping the snowglobe in one hand, peering inside, with light from an unseen fire illuminating his face.
Entry 23 - In the foreground stands Angel and Gunn, vamped out. Both are glaring, snarling, ready for battle, fists balled up, knees bent and ready to charge one another. Small in the background, almost separate from them are our heroes and villains mixing it up in a big way. Dead demons litter the ground and the demon count is overwhelming but our heroes seem to be doing okay - even if they have small gashes and rips on their wardrobe that would suggest otherwise. Above the battle, Angel’s dragon battles flying demons. Behind the battle we see ruined buildings. Some of the buildings have demons crawling on them or dropping to the ground to enter the fray. Small, on the ground between Angel and Gunn in the foreground is a photo of the cover art to the BBC Angel #1 cover (the art from the final scene of “Not Fade Away”) burning.
Entry 24 -
I’d like to see a moment that is reflective of happier times. An inside shot of the lobby of the Hyperion Hotel. Wesley and Angel behind the front desk – the picture of the gang that Gunn saved from the WR&H offices leaning up against the wall/tacked to a beam, just somewhere that we can see, if we look hard. And any others that can be fit into the scene – a sprawling Spike on the couch, a pensive Fred/Illyria looking at Wesley. Perhaps even a ghostly Cordy looking down from above. I want to capture that feeling of everyone being together, the precious few moments of quiet and companionship, before they must gear up and do battle.
Entry 25 - We see Angel's body on a funeral pyre. Connor is standing off to one side, the dragon in the background next to him. Connor has a hand on the dragon, as if consoling him. There is smoke, and perhaps just a small curl of flame curling from the dragon's mouth or nose, almost half hearted. Will they really go through with it? (Perhaps best done from just off to Connor's side looking towards Angel's pyre?)
