I'm starting to really enjoy this show. I think a lot of people that claim this show moves too slow is forgetting that this show is a drama with small action scenes, not the other way around. Alan Ball chose a really interesting setting to show us this world, and I think the show improves each week. I also love that each episode ends in a cliffhanger. Awesome stuff.

The first episoe ws actually pretty impressive, I only had a few things that I didn't like but I am giving it a chance. Having said that I thought the second episode was pretty boring.

True Blood on HBO, premiered Sept. 7, 2008. FYI, the novels written by Charlaine Harris have a huge fan base. IIRC, before writting Sookie Stackhouse Ms. Harris wrote romance novels. I wish this was so much better than what we're seeing on the screen! First episode, Strange Love, was so slowly plotted to border on having no plot at all. IOW, nothing seems to happen in the episode. The second episode, The First Taste, is plotted at a slightly greater than the snail's pace of the first one. After seeing The First Taste, I'll be watching the next one, too. s p o i l e r s p a c e s p o i l e r s p a c e YOU'VE BEEN WARNEDSpoilers follow The main character vamp is named Bill, REALLY! This is the third main vamp character named Bill or some derivative of same. There are more given names for men in English, and someone needs to pick one. (That's a niggling point, but it annoys me). Not so good storytelling. Example in the first episode this couple of drug dealer low lifes, the Ratray's (characterized very typically for their type), try to drain Bill of his vampire blood (in this universe vamp blood is an illicit drug that's very valuble), and Sookie saves him. The low life's overpower Bill without much of struggle, that's how it appears on screen. Afterwards, Sookie discovers that vamps can be immobilzed and held captive with silver chains, and then Bill tells Sookie to keep that a secret since his kind like to keep their secrets. WTF, it's not much of a secret if these low lifes know about it! It suffers, too, from excruciatingly bad dialogue (think Attack of the Clones bad). The character of Sookie's grandmother makes me want to claw my eyes out everytime she's on screen; FWIW, this same actress played a relative of Ryan and Cyril O'Reilly on Oz and I did not like her there either. I liked a lot better Moonlight than this. Perhaps, fans will come to True Blood for its supposed 'off beat' nature. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade of praise and admiration for this new HBO series. THANK-YOU. although I didnt think it was slow. just bad lol

Well the show gives a nice spin on the entire vampire story, thats been done to death! Despite the original idea, the show seriously has some flaws ( story and character development, mythology...) that just get in the way of me enjoying it.. Maybe in time it gets better.. But its sooo much better than Moonlight ( corny ).

Someone asked if I liked episode 2, First Taste, better than episode1, Strange Love? Well, yeah i did, but only marginally, similar to how I liked Revenge of the Sith better than Phantom... and Return of the Clones, and I thought it was better written, too, but the Star Wars parallels continue to this area. Another answer to previous messages, Strange Love is both SLOW and bad.
Unique take on vampire story, well not so much. Harris's take on vamps is very similar to L. K. Hamilton's in as far vamps live in the open and everyone knows about them, and in Hamilton vamps and humans are mutually attracted to each other (at least that's how they're written in the series). Robin McKinley's Sunshine is a unique and original treatment of the Vampire story.
Best show on TV? Well, Dexter, BsG, Sarah Jane Adventures and Sarah Connor Chronicles are all better than this.

To clarify one point from previous message. IMO, one does not need to be particularly original or unique to write a good vampire story; FYI, I don't think the Buffyverse, Forever Knight, Tanya Huff's Blood Ties are particularly unique or original vampire stories but all happen to be very good stories. I'm not entirely convinced that Stoker's Dracula, is particularly unique or original; IIRC, Stoker borrows extensively from Rymer's Varney, Polidori's Vampyre, and even some from LeFanu's Carmilla.

i LOVE it! Last night's ep even mentioned Buffy.....The owner of the bar, Sam, said he needed Buffy, or some other bad *** vampire killer. Something along those lines. It now gets my full stamp of approval. Had they never mentioned Buffy, I prbbly would have held a grudge. I love the rawness of it. There is no good vs evil, per se. Some of the humans are more evil than some of the vamps. It's all about individuals and stereotypes and prejudice. I think it has a lot of depth already and has a lot of potential, but hey, that's just me. I am just so sick of shows like 90210 and gossip girl. I want something about normal people, not rich people that happen to have love drama. boring and done to death.

I am enjoying this show more and more each week. This week's episode was especially strong as we started to finally see some conflict in Sookie's relationship with Bill. The conclusion to last week's cliffhanger was pretty cool, as was the later scene with Bill and the other 3 vamps. I also like how each week we learn a little more about the vampire mythology in the show, and this week it was mostly centered on how vampires nest and seem to get stronger with age (showcased by the way Bill's elder moved).
Some other interesting stuff along the way as well, like Jason's continuing troubles, and the season's mystery continuing at the end of the episode.

Call me crazy, but I got HBO just so I could see True Blood ( and Entourage ). Wasn't too wild about the first ep, but I do think it has gotten better every week. This last ep was my fave so far. We learned a lot more about Bill and I really like Bill and Sookie together. The actors do have chemistry. I actually liked Sookie's grandma. Am I the only one? I can't stand Sookie's brother-the guy's a sex addict and needs major help. Can't think of her name right now, but I really like Sookie's best friend too. She cracks me up and I feel for her because she's carrying that torch for Jason, Sookie's brother. Poor girl-Ha Ha! I loved Moonlight and still miss it, mostly because of the romance between the two leads. But, TB will have to do. Eric was very intriguing in a "I'm great looking but so scary" kind of way. I'm sure we will see more of him since apparantly he's the vampire "president".

I like True Blood so far. I don't think it'll ever reach the level of Allan Ball's other work, but it has a lot of potential, and I'm glad HBO is giving it the room and time to reach it.

I thought this last episode was great and very emotional. Tara's character continues to grow and develop and she gets more interesting every week. I'm interested in seeing where this sub-plot with her mom will go, because in this 'verse she could certainly be possessed. The death in episode 5 sure was tragic.

The series seems to be going in the right direction at the moment. I'm definitely liking Bill's and Tara's storylines. After watching Six Feet Under I've acquired a good amount of faith in Ball.

Sorry to bump an older topic, but I've been watching through this series recently. So far I love it. I just watched episode 8... love those cliffhanger endings. They've been making me want to keep watching the show until I've finished through the series.
