I don't know anything about the comics, but I saw the film yesterday and it was one of the worse films I've seen in a very long time! Maybe only people who were fans already liked it? I felt it was fragmented, boring, and unexplained a lot of the time. And way too long for what happened in it. Yuk to WM.

Saw it tonight and Loved it! I didnt feel that it was too long at all and when the credits started to roll I was really like wow that was 3 hrs...?! Seen a few of patrick wilsons films before and he really is a great actor and he did not fail with watchmen. If people are fans of his job here along with the guy who played roschach then you should check out Little Children with them both in. They are tremendous actors. (film also includes kate winslet and jennifer conelley so Im a HUGE fan.) But back to Watchmen...really enjoyed the overall plot and I havent read the GN and had no trouble keeping up. I got lost ocassionally with keeping up with who was who etc but it didnt take too much brain power to gradually piece everything together as it progressed. My main criticism however is that I just found the reveal of Ozymandias just really not that surprising. Me and my friend said when we came out we'd pretty much worked it out anyways. SSII was okayish...sometimes she just couldnt really hold her own and her usual chick flick simple acting came through but majority of the time she was okay. Also, LOVED the music. Other complaint is that they probably could have taken out like half an hour of it just by cutting down the bloody slo-mo scenes.lol. It worked here and there, but the constant slo-moing of SSII just swishing her hair and then doing some yoga position on the floor after just kicking someone kinda pissed me off...but I guess it looked all fancy and dramatic so its not that much of a big issue.

I love the graphic novel and am excited to say that I saw this movie in IMAX with rumble seats--yay!!
MY FAVORITE PARTS: -Bob Dylan opening montage. -conversation between Laurie and her mother, Silk Spectre. -the panel-for-panel depiction of the Comedian's death, and other scenes that stayed as true to the comic as possible. -Rorschach...every second he was on screen. -I found Laurie to be more tolerable in the film, and I loved her fighting moves when she fights with Nite Owl in the alley and the prison. -the glass castle on Mars was so well done.
MY LEAST FAVORITE PARTS: -the too-long, too-graphic sex scene in Archie, come on, really? I mean, the first sex scene is definitely supposed to be funny and awkward, but like others in this thread have said, the Archie sex scene was supposed to be taken seriously, as the characters are finally seeing each other for who they are in their costumes; also there was a family sitting in front of me with three young boys, and the sex scene consisted of their parents covering their eyes. -WTF HAPPENED TO THE TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER!?!?! That was like my favorite part of the comic, because it set the tone for the Watchmen's story going on around the comic-kid and newsstand-dude! Seriously, they should've cut the raunch out of the Archie sex scene and filled that time with the Black Freighter....SERIOUSLY. -Ozymandias was done all wrong. I can't pinpoint what I didn't like about the film's representation of this character, just that it was not comparable to the graphic novel.
Overall, I liked it. If you liked the graphic novel, you should go see the movie.

Seriously, they should've cut the raunch out of the Archie sex scene and filled that time with the Black Freighter....SERIOUSLY. This is actually going to be re-cut into the film later on for DVD. The animated Tales of the Black Freighter recently came out on DVD/Blu-Ray, and Snyder has said in interviews that it would be added to the film in a director's cut DVD/Blu-Ray release later on. Think the total running time for all the new footage will put the movie around 3 and a half hours. Looking forward to that. -Ozymandias was done all wrong. I can't pinpoint what I didn't like about the film's representation of this character, just that it was not comparable to the graphic novel. I agree here. I didn't have many issues with the film, but the actor that played Ozy in the film was my biggest problem with it. He just played the character too coldly. In the graphic novel, one of the best parts in it is the reveal that Ozy is the "bad guy." Because he is so likable and charismatic in the graphic novel, his reveal is very surprising. By playing the character coldly and almost to the point where he is unlikable, I am sure the final reveal wasn't very surprising for people that had never read the graphic novel. Just bad casting, imo. Other than that, I didn't have any other major problems with the film.

i finally saw the movie last night. i haven't read the graphic novel, but i read like an overview of the story so it was easy for me to follow and i loved it. (but my mom went with me and she didn't know anything about the story. she thought it was confusing and boring and she kept talking so i had to tell her to shut up, lol.) it is amazing if a nearly 3 hour movie can keep me entertained the whole time, so i look forward to buying it on DVD when it comes out. and now i have to buy the graphic novel as soon as i get some money.

Here's my problem with your problem. If it's remotely about parents having to cover their kids' eyes, then I say blame the idiots for bringing their children to an R-rated movie. I actually found the violence to be more offensive than the sex and nudity. Yes, the graphic novel was violent in parts, but the alley fight was a lot more violent than it needed to be, and the use of a buzzsaw on the guy's arms when his throat was quite simply slit was gratuitous. I don't get why it's more okay for kids to be exposed to violence than to sex. Both are quite natural impulses, and both can be damaging if not channeled properly. Which is why I mentioned in my review that kids should be left at home. I didn't find the sex scene in Archie gratuitous at all. And lyrically, the music fit quite well. For me, it was a special moment for the two; Dan for obvious reasons, but for Laurie too, since she was actually feeling something that she couldn't anymore with Doctor Manhattan, who's pretty much a superman. To just shorten it to a thirty second clip of cliched slow mo hand movements on each other's back wouldn't have done it justice.

Everywhere Watchmen is talked about it, this is basically all I see. It's a freaking penis, a human body part. Everyone either has one or has seen one. It got very annoying when people whispered or giggled whenever it was screen but have no audible reaction to a kid getting his cheek bitten off. Just don't get it.

That was exactly what I said in my review. The damn organ was visible in the graphic novel. It was present in the movie. But this may make you groan even more; in many circles, the state of the genitalia is also debated (i.e. circumcised or otherwise).

Wasn't the penis smaller in the comic?
Anyway, I loved the movie and agree with most of what everybody has said here. Dan and Rorschach = Awesome. Ozymandias = too overtly evil. Second sex scene = awkward. The fight scene in the alley was too violent, I think. And I liked the new ending, but with it, Bubastis is pointless. And he seemed out of place in the movie, anyway.

The penis was smaller, because they didn't want to draw too much attention to it. But it was disproportionate because it was meant to look Greek statue-ish. But the penis was hardly ever the focus of the book, and as far as I'm concerned, it really wasn't meant to be a plotpoint in itself in the movie. It's a penis. End of story.
But I agree that Bubastis served just about no purpose at all in the movie. Kinda like a CGI afterthought.

I thought it was insanely brilliant - before hand I didn't believe the hype! I was lucky enough to have a friend who is a watchmen-nerd and after the film he gave me some inside info that helped me understand it more (the only problem I had was so much info in every frame, too much at once, DETAILS) I am NOW starting to read the graphic novel because I was so highly intrigued, and it's a.m.a.z.i.n.g! READ IT.

I've heard a lot of criticism from readers and non-readers but I personally, as a reader, absolutely loved the film for a lot of the aforementioned reasons. Quite excited for the DVD release!

I have never read the comic but felt the film was spectacular. It was a real cinema experience as well - i sat in the middle of the back row in a pretty empty screening and the sound and visuals just rocked me in my seat. I thought the sex scene was just downright laughable to be honest. It really showed that the director of 300 (which i thought was awful) was in charge - that film also had a ridiculous, over-long and gratuitous sex scene. It also had loads of slow-mo, which Watchmen also carried on with unfortunately (seriously, two people walking down an ordinary street can be viewed just as well in real-time). Overall though, the plot, action and acting was great for the most part. I agree that I saw Ozymandias as the villain pretty early on mainly just because of a lack of alternatives. Who else is even a candidate?

I definitely loved the film. It was not as great as the novel, but for a film adaption of such a large graphic novel I think they did an excellent job. I also agree the sex scene was a bit uncomfortable and the music was...an odd choice, though. Also Malin Akerman is not a very good actress. But mostly I am just nitpicking, I loved the film. I do take a bit of issue with everyone here saying ozzy is "the villain". He was the one behind the plan, yes, but I think that Watchmen is much more complicated then "good guys fight villain". A lot of people would say that Ozzy in fact just did what had to be done, and that while he did lots of horrible things, it was for the greater good. After all, nuclear war would have been the end for everyone. Part of what makes Watchmen so compelling is that all of the characters are more then just "good guy" and "bad guy". They are all flawed.

I think that's a really good point. On a smaller scale, I would never brand Giles the villain for killing Ben in The Gift - I'd justify it saying it's for the greater good and prevents the loss of lives. I guess the problem comes when you ask if it is really the only course of action that can be taken, and how quickly one would be to resort to such action. Perhaps that's what makes the act one of villainy? Ozymandias definitely benefits personally for the disaster though, the construction that takes place afterwards seems to be making him money? That's pretty selfish and characteristic of a villain.
