The only way I can see this making sense is, like mentioned above, if Mal and Wash's character were swapped.
Nick is just too lovable and sweet to come across as a bad-arse cowboy space captain.
It's weird to imagine. Not as weird as if Firefly had more than 14 episodes though...

It's funny because I read Nathan auditioned for the Xander part...
I think Nathan is just perfect for the role, I can't picture anyone else portraying Mal. In fact, I'm in love with Nathan lol

I didn't know that either. He'd've made an interesting Xander....
Best wishes,

In fact, I'm in love with Nathan lol Actually, there's a behind the scenes video of The Train Job where Nathan says he auditioned for the part of Angel, but he never even got the chance to audition to Joss personally. And I'm convinced that this Brendon-as-Malcolm is not true. It doesn't make any frikking sense. Firefly started the same year Buffy's season 7 started. 2002. It's impossible for Brendon to star in two shows, in two different networks. The only way it could work would be Brendon starring Firefly and staying just as guest star in Buffy, like Tony Head was in the sixth season (also seventh? can't remember if he was credited as regular or guest). But Joss wouldn't do that, I guess, 'cause the Scoobie's original trio is not meant to be broken. Well, maybe the plan was using Brendon's twin LOL But that's just nonsense too LOL

Just to play devil's advocate... I don't know whether the rumor is true, but the time overlap between Firefly and S7 could be easily explained by the creative process.
Joss thinks up Firefly, pictures Nicholas as Mal (Wash char or no), but when the show is picked up with Buffy still airing, Joss would be forced to switch things up and hire outside of Buffy.
Just sayin'. The timeline doesn't disprove the rumor.

I remember Nick mentioning this at a convention a while back. I'm personally glad it turned out the way it did though. I can't imagine anybody more suited for the role of Mal than Mr. Nathan Fillion. Now I do seem to remember Nick mentioning something about going for the role of Caleb on one of the S7 episode commentary ( Dirty Girls, maybe?), but that was just a joke, obviously.

I didn't know. True or not, it would've been interesting Although I'm glad Nathan got the role, since he was perfect. I can't really see Nick as Mal.

He was apparently the first choice, but because he was busy with Buffy's seventh season, Nate Fillion was casted instead. well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

No way! Is this true? Nick was great as Xander, but Nathan owns the role of Malcolm. Is there anymore evidence for this other than the Wiki article? Maybe something Joss said from an interview?
I know that Katie Holmes, Charisma Carpenter, and Julie Benz tried out for Buffy, but that Joss thought they were too tall and looked too old.

Huh. That's... interesting. Strangely, I could totally see Nick as Mal, though his Mal would be different, probably more vulnerable, as people have pointed out before. It's kinda sad, because he would have been awesome in Firefly, and he didn't really do anything in Season Seven... Nick could have played a great Wash, too, but Wash was already Xander-ish. Getting Nick to play him would have definitely set him on the road of type-casting (though I'm pretty convinced that Nicky's already on that road... )

i remember nick's acting on the hienas episode and he can be mean or even when xander was split in two, he is a very good actor. so i can pretty much see him as mal.
don't get me wrong i love nathan as mal but if you ask me, i can see nick doing that part.

Since I've heard of the Brendon/Mal thing, I've been imagining him with an eye patch with darker Mal costume on. It just appears anytime I'm picturing him as Reynolds. *_* I know that Katie Holmes, Charisma Carpenter, and Julie Benz tried out for Buffy, but that Joss thought they were too tall and looked too old. Katie actually got the part but then turned it down. I wonder if she regrets doing that...

Well, we've watched The Pack, The Wish and The Replacement. I think Nick can pull off a dark character. We're thinking more of Xander here and less of Nick here. An actor shouldn't be judged by the role they're playing.

An actor shouldn't be judged by the role they're playing. Totally agree with you. Julie Benz played Darla, strong character, for many years. But on Dexter, she played this incredibly weak girl who's really a sad character (haven't seen it, but that's what I've heard). My point is, is that actors can be very versatile (which is a "duh" thing when you think of it). I've never seen Nick in any roles besides Xander so I'm not gonna judge whether he'd be a good Mal or not.
