I went! Heres my experience from my blog:
I went down to Chicago yesterday for Slay-A-Thon, which is a 12 hour Buffy and Angel marathon charity event for the Make A Wish Foundation, and it was absoutely amazing! It was at Dave & Busters on Clark Street, and it was a pain in the ass figuring out where the hell we were going to park, but I eventualy found a place: the Dave & Busters parking garage for $8 (which is sneaky, but more on that later!). Sadly, being poor myself, I didnt have anything to donate cash wise, but it was a free event so we were let in no problem. Now, I just want to state that since I was 7 years old, I was always known as the kid who loved Buffy, or the Buffy-kid, or something else to that effect. I didnt realy feel like an outside because of it because there were obviously other fans in the world, so I just went on about my day, but the thing about Buffy is it means more to me than anything else in the world. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my excape from the world, whenever there is drama in my life, or something I feel like I cant handle, or even if I just am having a lousy day, I have Buffy to turn to. It completely takes me away into this amazing world, and I believe has taught me many lessons in life that I couldnt learn elsewhere. I have had laughs, I have had fear, and I have had tears caused by this show, and what really touched my heart was that not only was I able to meet, I was able to sit there and share this with other fans from around the world. This was an extraordinary experience and I wouldnt take it back from the world, because just being in that room with everyone else, its like I finally felt that feeling that Buffy feels in the final episode of Season 7: connection. But, I am done with the sappy stuff. They had this game in the beginning, which was similar to $100,000 Pyramid, where a topic would come on the screen, and someone would have to describe it to the person unable to see it. I was picked to go up, which was awesome! Sadly, my partner felt that she couldnt describe half of the topics and we didnt win, but I think the woman running the show realized that it was my partner, and she gave me the prize anyway! The prize was a collectible Buffy action figure from her Hemery High days, which made me squeel with geeker joy. One thing that I found really interesting, was that majority of Buffy-fans absolutely HATE the character of Dawn. I do realize that she was a really whiney character for Seasons 5 and 6, but I actually liked her because she was a really interesting person who had a lot of levels. But these fans...they were booing her and calling her names when she came on the screen! But then again, they were also foaming at the mouth when Spike would come on because apparently everyone thinks he is the hottest thing to walk this earth! They had a silent auction, well two actualy, and two live auctions which the bids got as high as $300 for something as small as an action figure signed by a cast member. Sadly, being broke, I could not buy anything, or else I would have WON the signed picture of Sarah Michelle Gellar, which oddly only sold for $150, but then again I dont think the other pictures sold for much more, if they did at all. And then they had this sweet trivia game, which I didnt get to do (bummer!) but I knew amost all the answers anyway. I would have totally won! And the other great part of the night was the amazing buffets which were FREE! The food was fantastic and I stuffed myself, both times.
This was truly an amazing and unforgetable experience, one which I will treasure and hold very close to my heart forever, and hopefully one which I will experience again next year when I go!
