Great reviews keep rolling in: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/harry_potter_and_the_half_blood_prince/24 positive, only 1 negative (96%). I am getting so excited for this. I didn't think the series would be able to stay this strong after Order being so fantastic, but I am expecting this will be even better than Order. Let's hope they keep it going with movies 7 and 8.

I personally enjoyed it. It's a bit more liberal with the source material than the others, but definitely one of the better films of the film series.
Of course with my friends it was an endless stream of sexual innuendos, so maybe I'm a bit... outside the box here. <_<

I disagree vehemently.
It's the best Harry Potter movie, that's for sure. It's just barely better than OotP, because it's so stylistically similar, but OotP was so far ahead of every other Potter movie that it was insane. HBP captures the heart, humor, brains, whimsy, epic scope, attention to small moments, darkness, and tragedy of the "Harry Potter" series perfectly. It's by far the best movie I've seen all year, and that's saying a lot when you take into account how good flicks like "Star Trek," "Up," "Watchmen," "Adventureland," "I Love You, Man," etc were. It's simply brilliant.

so was it as loose as the cuaron one? i liked the aesthetic of HP3 but i did not appreciate how loose and not that faithful to the book it was. one example of the great aesthetic is the cuaron's bridge, 4 and 5 kept that bridge... and how the castle looks like. pretty different from 1 and 2.
cuaron = fail in regards of following the book, epic win in regards of the aesthetic.
for me the best one as of yet is hp5 and then hp4 and then 1 and 2. I have not seeing hp6, i will on saturday.

Well, I'll find out on Sunday what it's like when I take my mother along as a birthday present for her. I'm excited for it, though the one thing I'm looking forward to in the movie is Ron/Hermione. Other than that, I can't wait

I'm going to see this tonight! Booked my tickets earlier (yeah, I know, left it a little late XD) - and then was panicking cos the first two times I got to the end of the transaction and the website told me that all the tickets were gone. But finally got some booked for an earlier screening.
I hope I won't be disappointed with the film.

I saw this movie last night at the midnight screening with my friend (who actually introduced me to HP). I liked it, but didn't love it, and left the theater happy with the movie experience. Having read the books, I know all the important stuff they've left out, but it's the same important stuff they've left out of GoF and OotP, so at this point it feels like they're planning to leave all that info for a big shiny reveal in the DH two-parter. I guess I'm ok with that...*mumble grumble* This installment was stylistically superb; it's my favorite as far as that goes. And I was impressed with how much was portrayed in scenes with little or no conversation going on, which made it feel more like an arty/indie film. And I have to say that my absolute favorite part was the humor. It balanced the film so well, and for once I believe that the three main characters are acting as good of friends as they are described in the book. Now for some more detailed comments, which I've placed under ***SPOILERS*** since I'm going to be talking about specific plot points. The Felix Felicis sequence is hilarious, Daniel Radcliffe shows some pretty good comedy chops. I actually snorted with laughter in a packed theater, it was that good. I also enjoyed the little moments between Harry, Ron, and Hermoine, as the actors really hit the mark with showing the growing pains of being 16 and trying so hard to cover up your crush. Draco got stiffed in the script as far as lines go, but a lot of his plot was done with visuals, showing him finding the vanishing box, crying in the bathroom, and having heated conversations in dark hallways with Snape.
Now my biggest gripe with this movie: Once again, they've completely left out DOBBY and Kreacher and all other House Elves. This wouldn't be a big deal if they weren't so damned important in the DH. I mean, Dobby friggin' PWNS everyone in DH, and we haven't heard from or seen him since CoS in the films! wtf!?
Ok rant over. So overall, I give the movie a 8/10, but I gave the book a 10/10, and am still a little disappointed with some plot adjustments made for the film. If you like Harry Potter movies at all, DO go see this one, as it's quite fun to watch and is filmed beautifully. -Jen
