Don't get me wrong. I loved Firefly. I have rewatched every episode many times. Those 14 episodes are like everything amazing about buffy and angel condensed down into awesomey goodness with a flair all its own.
But as much as I liked it, thinking back on what could have been... could they have kept it going? Firefly would be in its fifth season now if it has survived? What more could they have done? They pretty much did every kind of episode when you include serenity.
thinking back on it It is almost more comforting to think of Firefly as a mini series then a failed series.
What do you guys think?

I'm not really sure how far Joss could of taken the characters and stories, but I would of loved to found out. I'm sure he had plenty ideas of where to take the series and it often makes me sad that we as an audience never got the chance to see those ideas get translated onto our TV screens. I just wish FOX or someone would allow the story to continue either in movies or direct-to-DVD releases.

I definitely think Firefly could have kept it up. They had barely gotten into any real story arc, and we hadn't really met any "big bads". They could have stretched out what happened in the movie (revelations about River) for quite some time. They could have added alot to Book's backstory. They could develop the Mal/Inara relationship. It seemed like what we got were a bunch of great stand alones with a few common themes, which would be an excellent foundation.
If you look at BtVS's first season, you might have wondered how they could possibly keep it up for 6 more seasons. After all, how many times can you slay vampires before it all feels the same? And to JW's credit, each season of Buffy felt distinctly different.
Also in Buffy, it was hard to explore the past of characters (except for Vampires and Giles). After all....their past consisted of going to high school and being normal. In Firefly, every character seems to have an interesting past, which could be explored and new storylines developed from.
To be honest, I don't rank Firefly as one of my all time favorite tv shows, because it was too short lived. However, of all the canceled shows out there, I'd want Firefly to be renewed because it showed the most potential.

Absolutely. While I was watching Serenity all I could think was how much of an amazing season of television it would make. It would be akin to Season 4 of Buffy, where the gang slowly falls apart but then reunites for a bigger cause. Except better. The season after this I think would be even better as it would deal ramifications of the movie (which would now be spread out and all that into a season), what happens to the Alliance, what will become of the Firefly crew, how will they deal with death of two friends etc. etc. It probably would have made an incredibly compelling season watching to see what the results of their actions would be.
There were so many stories to be told in Firefly, there was a whole universe to explore. A whole universe.
And we never did learn about the Blue Sun Corporation.

Definitely. Firefly had so much potential. I can think of a hundred different storylines for that show (and when I can think of a hundred, Joss can probably think of a hundred much better ones.) I'm sure Joss could have kept it going for at least five seasons.

Something I learned when watching Angel's fifth season: "Trust Joss." He knows how to tell stories, especially for TV. I think he could have done it.

I absolutely think that Firefly would have kept going. In fact, I often thought about what would have been had the series continued (character developments, etc.). Shame we never got the chance to see where it all could have gone. Yeah, we got a movie and I am glad of that, but it's not the same as having years to flesh out characters and plot. Firefly had a lot of potential. Heck, even with just 14 episodes it was one of the best things ever on TV. Shame that the stupid network couldn't see Firefly for the gem that it was and that as fans our time of getting to know these wonderful characters was cut way too short. I will never understand why crap shows get to stay on air season after season, while quality shows like Firefly get the axe. It just doesn't make sense! Oh no, I'm not bitter or anything.
