In the latest podcast from Brian Lynch, he stated that there is a possibility for a Kate spinoff. What do you guys think? Yes or No? For the record, I'm Jesse, the guy who asked the question at the beginning of the podcast... and I would love to know what Kate has been up to for the last several years, and even her current issues and such. So... yay or nay? Edit: Linkage to the podcast

I would enjoy that. She's interesting and I have been wondering what she's been up to.

Yes i was shocked to see kate it even kinda brought a smile to my face. But Since i seen Gunn as a Vampire I've been more concerned for him and finding out his story! It might sound funny but it actually breaks my heart that he was turned.

I'd love a Kate spin-off! Canon or Non-canon, I love the character.

Kate would be a character that I would be really unexcited to see get her own spinoff. I don't necessarily hate her, but she just doesn't "do it" for me. I would basically be way more interested in any other character besides her...except for Nina.
That being said...I would still buy it and I would still read it, assuming it was canon. I just couldn't stand to have canon stories being told and not knowing what happens.

I'd buy it, and I'd probably enjoy it, but Kate would be way down on my list of characters I'd like to see get a spinoff. Even tho he's not one of my favorites, the character I'd most like to see get a spinoff mini would be Connor, just because his story has gotten complex enough to make it worth it...

Interesting to see yes, but I don't know if the Angel title is the best place to explore that story. I mean, Kate pretty much vanished from the show at some point in S2 of Angel, and suddenly she's back. It was a great nod to a character that felt unfinished to have her in First Night, but as far as how important she is in the Buffyverse, I'd say that she probably doesn't warrant her own spin-off, seeing that it may not really advance the mythology of the Buffyverse.

Yes, Kate should have her own series. I think it would be interesting to read now that she lives the life of a demon hunter

I don't think a spinoff necessarily has to advance the mythology to be a valuable addition to the canon. I can picture a Kate spinoff as a return to the roots of Angel the Series -- back to the lone wolf (perhaps with a few wacky sidekicks?) helping the hopeless with her own private investigations. Gritty noir-type stuff, but with demons and daddy issues. Who wouldn't buy it?

If it doesn't extend/expand the Buffyverse mythology, or at least show relevance, then what's the point of making a spin-off? Make a separate TV show altogether then... less constricting with the rules of Buffverse gone. To answer your last question... unless it was well-written (and you can judge by thumbing through in a comic book store), I wouldn't. Not if it was a way to make a quick buck.

Gritty noir-type stuff, but with demons and daddy issues. Who wouldn't buy it? Right. Exactly. I'd love to see it as something that isn't even all that related to Angel. I mean she did leave the show for how many years? But rather it chronicles HER own story. Much like the way Angel split from Buffy -- there was some interaction but the stories are very much their own. Why not take this little-used character and run with it? We see this in comics all the time... most of the superheros we know about in Marvel and DC began as sidekicks or third-rate characters until a writer came in and saw some potential and decided to tell a story. Now that the Buffyverse is canonically in comics, maybe it will begin to adhere to this kind of precedent set by other comic universes. Then a lot of the characters could get their own series... even a random slayer that has never even met Buffy... something like The Chain... or even about a character that was briefly on the show. Or if we wanted to know about what happened during Willow's mystical walkabout -- she can have her own series/miniseries. The Buffyverse is limitless in the stories it can tell now. That's what's so exciting about comics.

I don't think enough people would be behind the idea of a Kate spin-off. And I don't think its really important. Its like having a spin-off of Merl, its just not necessary.

But it wouldn't be Kate: After the Fall. It would probably be set earlier in the series, to see how she got from EPIPHANY to here. I don't see how fans of the Buffyverse are saying "No, I would not like a spin-off."

I don't see how fans of the Buffyverse are saying "No, I would not like a spin-off." It's making me scratch my head as well. I would figure fans of the Buffyverse would lap up any new stories that furthered the development of a character such as Kate, or anyone else for that matter. I know I would.

Exactly. Like I said before, the medium has changed. It's no longer a television series, it's a comic universe, and barring any future TV/media productions, it's all we have. In comics, the amount of stories that can be told is endless. If you don't like Kate, don't read the comics. Now, I don't expect Joss to have a huge hand in these kind of supporting character comics, but I assume he would do like he's doing with ATF... maybe even a bit less involved. Like maybe an author is interested in doing a story about Kate, suggests it to Joss, Joss says "Hey, I like it! Run with it..." Like everything would be approved by Joss to assure it canonocity.
All it takes is an author who is interested enough in the character to write something. The future I imagine for the Buffyverse is very very similar to what I see in the DC and Marvel comic universes. I don't want the Buffyverse to be as complex as what DC/Marvel is, but still similar. In both of these major comic universes, each character has their own storylines, their own books. And then they can join up in teams and stuff... like JLA, X-men, etc... maybe that's the main Buffy comic. But then Willow can have her own comic with its own characters, Xander, Giles, Faith... But then that doesn't prohibit them from being used in the main Buffy comic.
That's the future I see. I don't know if it'll happen. I don't think Joss is aspiring to be the next Stan Lee who is writing all of these stories himself. But I do think he would want the Buffyverse to continue. And the fact that he's letting someone else do a canonical Angel story leads me to believe that this is kind of like the vision he has. The Buffyverse doesn't need Joss to write EVERYTHING... if a writer wants to do a series of comics based on Willow, or Kate, or Satsu, or anyone else in 'verse, they could write their own comics... and have it tied in to the main Buffy/Angel comics. If you think about it, that's kind of what Joss did with Angel the Series... he was never really directly invovled in its production (aside from season 5, I believe)... he passed the reigns on to other people he trusted with the characters.
That's what I think is going to happen. And I"m excited about it.
Just my $.02
