The Joss company line that "there was no more stories left for her" regarding Cordelia is the biggest load of bull I've ever heard. I'm more inclined to believe the nastier rumours that the two didn't get along at that stage of their careers which resulted in Charisma being fired. And I hate that, hate to be a part of those kind of rumours, but it honestly, to me, sounds more logical and appropriate than what Joss has said.
'You're Welcome' showed how they could have used Cordy in season five. She could have been the voice of reason, the only one not to join Wolfram and Hart, perhaps they could have upped the drama with the Angel/Spike rivalry they touched upon in 'Soul Purpose' by having Cordy reluctantly joining Spike in "the good fight" and passing of her visions to him because she couldn't bare to work at Wolfram and Hart. It'd cause great tension between Angel/Cordy and Angel/Spike and it'd certainly be one place they could have taken Cordelia's character. It'd also make for a sweet ending where Cordy and Angel join forces again. That's just one idea, and I'm hardly a creative mastermind like Joss Whedon is, he could have come up with something better *if he wanted to.*
So I do believe there’s stories left for Fred, just as much story as there ever was in bringing Spike back which was really only done because the executives wanted Buffy fans over on Angel, to play off against Angel, and not much to do with the Spike character himself. Thankfully, he actually progressed, but it wasn’t the intention, in fact from what I heard Joss didn’t even want him around all season, he was initially only supposed to appear in some episodes, or in flashbacks from what I remember reading. It was the execs that wanted the character to stick around. So Fred, yup, just like Spike, just like Cordy, there’s stories left to tell there if there needs someone wants them to be.
Wether or not they should though, is where I’m torn. I agree that resurrections are a little too easy these days and it can cheapen the deaths of the characters. I mean it doesn’t always, Angel’s resurrection didn’t cheap his “death?” in ‘Becoming II’ at all in my opinion, and Buffy’s resurrection didn’t cheapen her sacrifice in ‘The Gift’ either. Though sometimes I feel like it would, I love Cordy and wished she hadn’t died, but she did, and her amazing scene in ‘You’re Welcome’ was so heartbreakingly beautiful and bitter sweet that I don’t want her back alive ever again, I’m not sure if I don’t feel the same way about Fred.
