Great interview! I think Aftermath will be a great continuation of the series (so long as the writing is good... I've not read any of Armstrong's work). I believe that it is definitely canon. She seems to be saying that they have run the plot by Joss and he approved it or something like that. Either way, in my own little world it will be canon because I doubt Joss has any other plans for Angel... he's always been more involved with Buffy.

I totally agree that it's canon. She seems humble about it, but more sure about answering that question than when she discussed in on her forum. Besides, it's not like some random licensed novel...so it works for me. Oh and she was so nice!
Sure, enisy...no problem. I think people will want to read it!

I'm a bit wary about the "one or two" new characters. Is there really any place for them within so few issues?
Also, I wish someone would ask her whether Joss will contribute to, or at least approve of, her storyline. Her comments on "canon vs. non-canon" were a bit vague (although your question was very well-put, buffyfest).

yeah, she has been a bit non-committal about it. I think she's maybe a bit nervous about upsetting the fans (and I kind of can't blame her considering how hard core we are.) She was so very nice, though.
I'm also hoping the 1 or 2 new characters are ones of the past and not completely new, but that may be total wishful thinking.

Ah, apparently she commented on Joss's involvement in another instance:
Question: What is Joss Whedon's input in the story? Kelley Armstrong: The story will be approved by him.
That makes me feel much more comfortable with the whole thing.

Great interview! Thank you for posting it for us, buffyfest. I am really excited about "Aftermath," and it's nice to know that Kelley is such a big fan of the Buffyverse.
As for the one or two new characters - perhaps she is just referring to the "Big Bads" of the arc?

Like I've said before... as long as the story directly follows the continuity set by ATF, I'm happy to consider it canon. Joss has never been all that involved in the production or story-telling of the Angel series. As a matter of fact, his only major involvement was in season 5 when his other shows were off the air. Also, Joss never intended for Angel to go on as long as he did. It was network that said... "This Angel guy..." and the rest is history. But Joss has never been too involved in the story itself.
That said, I'm happy to consider anything IDW does that follows the continuity set by ATF as canon... unless Joss explicitly states "No. That's not canon." But I doubt that will happen. Joss has a lot on his plate right now with Buffy, Goners (or Cabin in the Woods, which movie is he currently writing?), Dollhouse, and god knows what else... I doubt he's going to return the Angelverse in any significant way any time soon. So IMO it's canon until Joss says it isn't.

You know we were originally going to ask her about her involvement with Brian Lynch in the whole thing too, but she pretty much covered it on her site. Go here to check it out: www.kelleyarmstrong.com/Also, we're having a contest on our Buffyfest blog and giving away a gift bag full of Buffy fun. Write a "Haiku Review" to enter inspired by any episode, season (or even character, I guess - hadn't thought of that earlier.)

Thanks for posting this. I've read some of her other stuff and she's a very good writer. I look forward to her take on Angel.
Best wishes,

I love her answer here. It shows she understands the appeal of the characters on a deeper level. I think she shows great insight into the characters - I'm looking forward to Kelley Armstrong's Aftermath even more now. I also loved her answer about Fred - I love Fred too and for the same reasons. Her indomitable spirit. Great picks for Armstrong's favorite episodes - Hero and A Hole in the World. Love those! I'm a bit wary about the "one or two" new characters. Is there really any place for them within so few issues? I'm not worried about the new characters at all. Only one or two isn't much at all. The story would become stagnant if Angel, Wesley, Frylliria, Gunn, Spike, Connor, Nina, Gwen and "Cordelia" the dragon were only interacting with themselves. One character who's new that simply rocks is the villain in Spike: AtF. A totally new and badass character. I'm hoping the new characters Armstrong mentions are villains. I think the heroes side is pretty full on the character list. Of course, Lynch has hinted that some characters may die at the end of After the Fall. So maybe the stage won't be as full as we think when Aftermath begins.

Someone suggested that the 2 new characters might be crossover characters. I think that would be very interesting (even if it's just B characters) since I'm still waiting to know why Buffy and co. aren't currently concerned about the state of Angel and co. and vice versa.
What do you think are the odds of that?

What do you think are the odds of that? Andrew could easily guest over on Angel. He might need to be there to get a explanation for what happened to the slayers that were caught up in After The Fall. ALSO - Harmony might transition back over to Angel. If she is truly seeking fame she is probably going to need to be in L.A.

What do you think are the odds of that? I think "new" character means an original character that Armstrong would introduce to the story. I don't think a crossover character counts as "new" exactly. Although I would love seeing some crossover action - yes, please.

Any news on if they are going to keep the After the Fall numbering? I hope they do--give us one solid ongoing Angel title.
