City of the Dead*An Ongoing Tale of Survival Horror*StoryWelcome to Harper's Valley. It is a small, isolated mid-western town in the United States. It has a population of 70,000 citizens. It is surrounded by mountains in every direction, and there is only one way in and out of the city, over a large bridge and the Wakefield River.
It is also being overrun by zombies. None of the citizens know what caused the outbreak, or even why the dead are rising. It is up to a select group of survivors to make it out of the city alive, before the entire city is consumed by the walking dead.
*This is their story.*Rules*First and foremost, this RPG is rated PG-13! I know that may seem hard to do with a subject such as this one, but I'm sorry, we have to follow forum rules. Excessive language is allowed, as long as it is spelled a certain way (F*** or even @#&$ are the only acceptable ways). Implied gore can be just as effective as detailed gore, so be mindful. Use Supernatural as a model when discussing the red stuff (i.e. if what you are posting is too much for that show, then tone it down).
*Only one character per person, and every character must be filled out using the provided character sheet.
*Do not speak for another member’s character, or move them around without permission. I don't mean you can’t have them follow you down a corridor or sit next to you at a table. Just don't make them killed by a zombie or anything.
*No Mary Sues or perfect characters. Everyone loves flawed characters, so let's see them. A waitress isn't going to be a whiz with a hunting rifle, unless she has the backstory to back it up.
*Posts should be more than one sentence. 3-5 sentences are the best minimum.*Character Sheet *Name: *Age: *Sex: *Appearance: (Height, build, hair/eye color, type of clothing they wear, any piercing/tattoos, etc.) *Personality: *Profession: *Strengths: *Weaknesses: *Family: *History/Background:*Characters Sam Richards (played by Wyndam) [/b][/center]

Are we suppose to post the character sheet here? Yep! Everything will be handled in this thread.
Once we get going, if someone has a question to ask or something, just type OOC (Out Of Character): (then your question, comment, whatever). That way people will be able to differentiate between questions and actual RPG text.
An example would be:
OOC: I will be gone for a week!
IC (In Character): Billy reaches for the door, hesitant about turning the handle...

Great bio Sky! You can post a picture of your character if you want. *Name: Sam Richards *Age: 29 *Sex: Male *Appearance: Sam has fair skin, short brown hair and blue eyes. He stands about 6’3” and has a lean, athletic build. He is usually wearing comfortable clothes; since he is outdoors often that usually consist of hiking boots, a green t-shirt and blue jeans. It is not rare for Sam to keep a few days worth of stubble either. He has a dark green HVFS (Harper’s Valley Forestry Service) jacket that he will wear when it is cold outside. Sam also wears a sidearm holster, and a utility belt that holds a radio, large pocketknife and a flashlight at night. *Personality: Sam is a guarded individual. Since losing his sister, and become estranged from his parents, he hasn’t gotten close to anyone ever since. He has trouble opening up and connecting to others. None of his personal relationships ever last long, and he has since retreated into his work. Despite being unable to connect with people, when he does make a friend or meets someone he grows to care about, he becomes fiercely loyal, an extension of the bond he shared with his sister. Sam has an uncanny problem solving ability, that allows him to think fast on his feet and lead others well. While he is a reluctant leader, he was recently promoted to Chief Ranger in the Harper’s Valley Forestry Service, a position he feels unqualified for, despite his natural abilities. Becoming the Chief will require Sam to step out of his preferred state of independence, which is something he is worried he won’t be able to overcome. *Profession: Harper’s Valley Forest Ranger (Chief Ranger) *Strengths: Sam is excellent at what he does. He was always an outdoorsy person, and joining the Forestry Service was a perfect move for him when he moved to Harper’s Valley. Over the years, he has developed into an effective leader, even if he doesn’t know that himself. He is also a burgeoning strategist, and able to plan quickly and is great in a crisis. *Weaknesses: Sam’s guarded personality prevents him from forming close relationships. With that comes severe anxiety and worry that he will be unable to lead properly, as the new Chief. All of his emotional problems stem from his extreme guilt over losing his sister. Physically, Sam also has a weak left leg, because of a boating accident when he was 18. If Sam overexerts himself for long periods of time, his leg will become extremely sore and eventually Sam won’t be able to walk until resting for a while. *Family: Father, Jonathan Richards (estranged); Mother, Marilyn Richards (estranged); Sister, Rachel Richards (deceased). *History/Background: Sam grew up in a wealthy household on the East Coast, with two loving parents and a sister that was two years younger than he was. He and Rachel were extremely close and did everything together. When Sam was 18 and getting ready to go to college, he and his sister went sailing one afternoon. Sam was hesitant to go, as it was about to storm, but his sister convinced him, as she always did. It wasn’t long before the storm hit, violently and unforgiving. Sam desperately tried to get the boat back to shore, but the storm swallowed them up. Four hours later, Sam washed up on shore with a broken arm and a badly injured left leg. His sister was never found. The doctors were able to save Sam’s leg, and after a few surgeries and nearly a year of physical therapy, Sam returned to a very different household. His parents blamed him for his sister’s death, and Sam did as well. He should have been able to save her, and wished he had died in her place. It got to the point where his parents wouldn’t even look at him, so Sam left with the money he had saved for college, and moved to Harper’s Valley. It wasn’t long before he joined the Harper’s Valley Forestry Service as a Forest Ranger, and quickly rose through the ranks. Over the last ten years at Harper's Valley, Sam has lived a quiet life. What few romantic relationships he has started have all been very brief. He enjoys the solitude that his job provides. Recently, the current Chief decided to retire, and chose Sam to take his place.

*Name: Chris Rowe *Age: 27 *Sex: Male *Appearance: Chris has long-ish brown hair, blue eyes. He is pretty short, only 5'7 and he is also pretty thin, but could hold his own. As for apparel, he just wears whatever is casual: plan shirt, jeans, sneakers. Doesn't really give a damn what he looks like. *Personality: Sociopath. Doesn't care about anyone around him and loves being the center of conflict, pushing everybody's buttons. He is very out-there, loud and doesn't care at all what other people think about him. Loves thrills and danger. Likes it when things go his way and hates it when they don't. He also hates it when people get emotional, just get over it already and move on. He doesn't dwell, would rather just keep moving forward. *Profession: Has never had one. *Strengths: Brave, isn't afraid of anything, good with knives. He is emotionally detached, which he believes is a strength, it doesn't slow him down. *Weaknesses: He's reckless, doesn't care about anyone around him or who he hurts. Not as strong as he'd like. *Family: Yeah, a mom and dad, but hasn't seen them since he was a young teenager, surpresses the memories of them and that's the way he likes it. Doesn't know where they are and could care less. *History/Background: As soon as Chris could walk, he was a troublemaker: yelling, getting in fights and vandalism. Growing up, he got kicked out of three schools before his parents decided to get a psych consult. After stabbing the psychologist in the leg with a pen, he got admitted to a psych ward in Harper's Valley hospital. Chris liked to cause drama there, messing with both patients and staff, he has even tried escaping a few times. Chris doesn't mind staying there though, just wants to get fresh air once and awhile. He has even made a few "friends" in his own twisted sense of the word.

(Hope this history works, if not I'll redo it!)

Great bio VS. The RPG will actually be starting right before people start turning into zombies. What will happen is people will start to get sick over the course of a few days, then there will be a few isolated events (attack in the city morgue, on the outskirts of town, etc.), and then once a lot of people become infected, that is when all hell will break loose. So you can still work the stuff in your bio into the story though, I just wanted to give a heads up about where we will be starting. And since we have 5 characters, I think we can go ahead and kick this off. I will be back later to start, but if ya'll read this before I do, feel free to start your first posts.
If you haven't noticed by now, I'll post any RPG related stuff in red. Since we just have one thread to post bios, talk about the game, and actually RP, I thought this would help further distinguish between all the different types of posts.

IC
Milla was returning home from grocery-shopping. She walked fast, head down, avoiding the gaze of the people she meet on the street.
She only shopped once a week, often late at night, since she wanted to avoid conversation from the friendly people of Harper's Valley. This time was no different.
Which is probably why she kept walking into people. No, that wasn't it. Usually people stepped out of her way if she didn't sense them ahead, but it seemed like people were off, more unaware of their surroundings than usual. A cough here and there could be heard.
"Must be the flu. Or my imagination".
She kept walking.

OOC: The official date of the RPG will be October 31, 2009. It'll be early morning too. Time will just kind of go with the flow, and I will usually move things along in my post if I need to (day to night, whatever).
IC: Sam Richards woke with a start, sitting up in his bed and looking around. Realizing where he was, he relaxed and rubbed his eyes. His golden retriever, Amy, hopped onto his bed and licked his face.
“Bad dreams, girl.” He said, rubbing her head, “I’m okay.”
Sam stretched and got out of bed, glancing at the dark circles under his blue eyes in the mirror. He rubbed a hand along the light stubble on his face and through his brown hair. Sam was tall, over six feet, and had the athletic build of a swimmer. He sat back on his bed, rubbing his left leg as light crept into his bedroom window. Swimming helped keep his leg healthy, and didn't put too much strain on it, so he tried to go every day before work.
He looked at the clock. It was early; he had enough time for his swim at the nearby indoor pool before heading to work. He paused and rubbed his eyes again. Work. Today was his first day as the new Chief Ranger at the Harper’s Valley Forestry Service. The old chief, Barry Hendrickson was retiring, and for some reason, he named Sam his successor. Sam was perfectly happy as a regular Forest Ranger. He was good at his job, and didn’t think he could handle the extra responsibility.
Harper’s Valley was a small town, barely considered a city, but since it was completely isolated by surrounding mountains, the Forest Rangers were almost as important as the local police. Their unit wasn’t very large, only ten Rangers, but they got the job done. Camping and other activities were very popular, so the job usually stayed exciting enough. Sam was always an outdoors type, and so he fit in perfectly with this line of work.
He grabbed his bag and an apple before leaving his apartment with Amy in tow. They walked down five flights of stairs and outside. It was chilly on the final day of October.
“Dammit.” Sam said, slamming the door of his jeep when he remembered what day it was. Halloween. The local kids were wild on Halloween, and they usually got into trouble out on the mountain. Not the best day to be promoted. He checked to make sure Amy was lying down in the backseat, before starting the engine and making his way to the pool.

The alarm went off with the usual annoying noise that made him want to throw the damn thing out the window. Groggily switching the alarm off and resisting the urge to smash it, Dallas Baker sat up and stared out the window at the early morning "Another day, another car, another paycheck," he thought Groaning, Dallas got out of bed and headed down to the kitchen, before making himself up a mug of coffee, then started getting ready for the day. As he passed the calender, he stopped for a check of the date: 31st October "Halloween. Gonna be a good day" Once he was ready, Dallas hopped into his 2004 Nissan Patrol, before driving to work. He was the first one there, which was quite normal. The others wouldn't start to arrive for about another half hour. Signing, Dallas went to work on the oldest arrivals, trying to get them out of the way for the customers "Time is money," Dallas thought as he got started, "Yep, another day, another car, another paycheck"

*Name: Julian Lambert *Age: 38 *Sex: Male *Appearance: Julian stands around 6’2” and has fair skin, short medium brown hair, and blue eyes. He's of a medium build - wide shoulders, strong arms, definitely an outdoorsman. Usually seen in casual and somewhat dated attire, due to his mostly loner permacuturalist lifestyle near the mountains; thus, his clothes usually consist of dark-colored hiking boots, an assortment of worn button up shirts, and dark jeans. Julian also maintains his beard, only occasionally trimming it for errands out of town. *Personality: Julian is the town hermit, to say the least. He keeps to himself and is completely dedicated to maintaining his garden as well as exploring the town's surrounding land. Although reserved, Julian is never rude or socially inept. He is, instead, a highly educated individual with a caring and respectful personality whenever he does speak. His seeming introversion is a thin veil to his deep concern towards the well-being of others around him. Julian is also a natural born leader who's just lost his way and shut others out since the death of his fiance. He is an avid reader, writer, and hunter (for food, not sport, and only occasionally, as he is very conscious of life and maintains a mostly organic diet.) Julian is very spiritual and spends a lot of his time meditating and hiking up the mountains. *Profession: Writer (although he hasn't been writing effectively since his loss), and he commonly sells some of his produce to the local market. *Strengths: Julian has extensive knowledge on the history of the town and the surrounding land. He is precise and focused at what he does and can find his way efficiently through the mountains. He is convincing and firm as a leader, being true to his activist past. As a hunter and outdoorsman, he has natural skill in handling weapons, as well as getting out of precarious situations. *Weaknesses: Julian can be impulsive in his fear of letting down those around him. Although he mostly maintains his asthma condition under control, it can sometimes set off due to exertion, anxiety, etc. His concern for others' safety rather than much of his own, can be fatal. *Family: Mother, Agatha Simos (living in Europe as a writer, motivational speaker, and professor); Father, Mark Lambert (deceased) *History/Background: Julian was born in California, but raised in different parts of the world because of his father's work as an anthropologist and writer. His father was dedicated to his son emotionally and in regards to his education. His mother, although also devoted to her son and husband, traveled quite often, but still managed to leave a lasting impression on Julian, especially after his father's heart-related death when the young man was just 26. Julian has a PhD in Literature, and was an avid activist for most of his life until the death of his pregnant fiance, Alice Mather, during a police shootout. Julian had recently bought a home in Harper's Valley, in which he planned to live with Alice and raise their child. Before Alice, Julian had been in several relationships, but had never found what he was looking for until he met her in one of his permaculture classes where they both shared a love for nature, literature, and spirituality among other things. Julian had been a published author but hasn't been able to complete his writings, or felt confident in them, since Alice's death last year.

Chris opened his eyes after what felt like an eternity of sleep, his head and body felt like he had been stomped to death. Laying down, he looked around the room he was in and realized it wasn't his own, it was just white, every single thing was just pure white. The only object in the room was the bed he was laying on.
Chris started to sit up, but couldn't. He turned his head to the left, to the right, and he saw that both his hands were strapped down. Slamming his head down on the pillow, he began to laugh as he remembered being manhandled into the Electric Shock Therapy room, everything before that was kind of fuzzy.
"Whatever I did, it was worth it."
Lifting his head up a little, he looked at the door with a little window at the top. People were walking by, other patients and staff. The only things he could hear were people having coughing fits and lots of "excuse me"s. Chris slammed his head back against the pillow again and stared at the white ceiling.
"Serves em' right."

Sam walked through the front doors of the nearby gym, Amy in tow. He had been in town so long, and to the gym so often, that the owners didn’t mind if his dog came along. She was well trained enough to follow him anywhere, no questions asked. The front lobby was dark, which was unusual. “Morning, Doris.” He said, with a small wave as he passed the reception desk. The older woman had her head down, and all her welcome afforded was a small grunt as Sam passed. Late night, I guess. He thought as he moved down the corridor towards the pool, the smell of chlorine and dirty gym clothes filling his nose. The gym was usually more crowded than it was today. A lot of people liked to come and do their daily routine in the early morning, like he did, but he only saw one or two people as he passed the work out rooms. He changed into his bathing suit in the locker room, grabbed his goggles from his bag and walked out towards the pool. He figured he must have been the first one back there today, as it was just as dark as the front lobby. He flicked on a few lights, walked to the edge and adjusted his goggles. Amy trotted to the corner and laid down, ready to watch him swim. Sam took a deep breath and dove, the icy water enveloping him like-- * * * The wave crashed down over Sam, nearly knocking him clear from the sailboat. He gasped for air and shook his head, clearing the water from his eyes.
“Rachel!” He yelled, looking left and right. She was nowhere to be seen on the boat. He rushed to the edge and looked out at the open sea, looking for any sign about where his sixteen-year-old sister could be.
“No, no, no.” He said, gripping the boat tight and moving from each side, looking for his sister. It was so dark out, that he could barely see ten feet from the boat. The rain slammed down on the boat in waves, nearly sweeping him out into the see.
He moved back to the port side of the boat, and caught a glimpse of his sister’s yellow raincoat. He propped his feet on the edge of the boat, getting ready to dive.
“Hold on Rachel! I’m comi--“ a wave drowned out the rest of his words as it crashed into him, sending him down deep into the watery depths.* * * Sam came up for air, his dive nearly taking him half the length of the pool. He stood there, treading water while he caught his breath. He ran a hand through his wet hair, wondering if he would ever not be reminded of that horrible night whenever he dived into the pool. Everyday it was the same, constant reminder of what had happened over ten years ago. After he composed himself, Sam kicked off from the bottom of the pool and resumed his swim.

OOC Is there a specific order we should post or should we just go ahead as soon as someone else has posted? OOC: Nope, there is no posting order. You can post whenever you want, especially once we start interacting with each other. Since this is the beginning and that is usually a lot of set up and establishing characters and locations, posts won't be as connected as they will later on.

Milla looked out the filthy window at the dark street below.
She hated this little appartment. She had grown up on the country side, miles from a amll town, nothing but fields and lakes.
She used to take long walks, swim, have fun, mostly on her own, since she very few friends. The world had been open to her.
Now her world was a small one-bedroom apartment.
"Can't go outside, won't go outside."
Harper's Valley was in no way a crowded place, you could walk around without shoving elbows, so it was in no way a "closed" world, hectic or stressful. The nature was strong here, like where she grew up.
But Milla's world was a small apartment.
