I too hope for a Buffy Blu-ray release eventually. It would be awesome to have my fave show ever in the HD format. I think it could be done if FOX were willing to spend the time and money it would take to produce it. I certainly think they would be able to recoup any losses because there are many fans out there, myself among them, who would be willing to repurchase the entire series in blu-ray format. As someone who appreciates the picture and sound quality blu-ray offers, it would definitely be money will spent, imo, and I would not think twice about throwing down the extra cash to see my fave series ever in improved quality. . Given all the previous DVD releases of the series FOX has churned out on us poor, hapless fans just to make profit, I personally don't see what's holding them up from going the blu-ray route. Surely, they realize that this would be a profit goldmine!

what i have been looking into is blu-ray players with high quality up conversion. a friend of mine has one made by oppo, and we watched segments of each season of buffy. season one, not that big of a difference, season two was a lot smoother for an HDTV, and season three just blew me away. needless to say, it was as good from there on.
if you're looking up blu-ray players on-line, be sure to check out there product specifications and see if the player has upconversion for standard dvds. it may be automatic on some blu-ray players, but on my friends, you could select if you want it to play in 1080p, 720p, or as a normal dvd.
in short, you don't have to re purchase seasons 1-7 of buffy, just buy a blu ray player with upconversion, and you'll have the latest player for newer movies you want to buy for your blu-ray player. if you have any questions, send me a PM.

I wanted to bump this back up to note that older shows are slowing starting to make their way to Blu-Ray, with great results. Obviously the major example is the original Star Trek series, which was benefited greatly from Blu-Ray. The complete series of The Prisoner (a 40 year old show) has been released on Blu-Ray with great results as well.
TV has taken a bit longer than movies (especially older TV shows) to be completely adopted by Blu-Ray. Even all currently airing shows aren't appearing on Blu-Ray yet.
I am confident though, that in 2011 we will begin hearing rumblings about a Buffy Blu-Ray set, and hopefully Angel soon to follow. Joss has such a large fanbase, the rest of his catalogue is already on Blu-Ray (Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible), and his marketing machine will be picking up a lot of steam next year with The Avengers, that it'd be silly for Buffy/Angel not to eventually make their way to Blu-Ray.
Fingers are still crossed! What a happy day that will be.

I wouldn't be opposed to a blu-ray release, but the bad thing is that the earlier seasons (especially season 1) seemed to be filmed like a low-budget horror movie. With that in mind, the transfer wouldn't look anywhere near as good as say 6-7. Firefly had some of the same issues. It was just purposely done that way to give it a grainy western-feel. Having it all bright and shiny would look pretty, but just kind of take away from the feel of the series.
