this show is incredible. i've only read the first issue, but i think that they got a great cast for the show. i'm a huge laurie holden fan (x-files, the shield s7). i know that the books are supposed to focus more on the characters rather than the action, but there have been a few episodes where i've kinda wanted more in the zombie killing department.
but overall, they've got a great story and a great cast. it's a shame that the season is almost over. sadly we'll be waiting for next years amc fearfest for the new season. i read an article online that amc credited launching the show during fear fest for the successful ratings and will try it again next year.
i think i also read there will be 13 eps. correct me if i'm wrong.

Erm... apparently the entire writing staff has been fired. Yep. Read it HERE.

^^ Not sure what that means yet, but it sounds pretty lame. I don't know much about Darabont's reputation, I wonder if he is difficult to work with...

Nope, you're right, season two is 13 episodes -- a nice, meaty season of cable television.
I don't think the Internet can get quite enough of the story about Frank firing the entire writing staff. Point to consider: they weren't significantly contributing to the show's first season (if the final credits are to be believed) -- Frank wrote two episodes and co-wrote the rest (including the one with Kirkman himself). Of course, doing a full season (13 episodes) without a foundation of a writing staff to bounce ideas off of and to keep the house in order is likely to do bad things to the show.
This may just be moot; maybe Frank's just trying to scare us and he's actually just doing the normal TV thing in an extravagant way. Either way, well-played sir: you have our attention.

I believe Torchwood is using freelance writers for its upcoming season on Starz. Maybe it is becoming more popular?
I do think the show needs at least a small writing staff, but since Darabont handled so much of this season they may not need it. Guess we'll see when Season 2 starts!

Torchwood originated as a BBC show, though. They don't have to follow the WGA's rules, and the equivalent union in the UK apparently has no problem with freelancing. I don't know if this gets complicated by the fact that Starz (an American company) is now helping produce the new mini-series, but I doubt it: Torchwood is BBC first, so they're allowed to freelance.
I can already smell the WGA letter coming to Darabont's mailbox. *evil laughter, thunder, dramatic music*

I'm not worried. According to that article the writing staff wasn't being utilized anyway.

Is there anywhere I can watch this online? I watched the pilot on Hulu, but it seems to have been taken down, and no additional eps have been added.

Episode 5 really shocked me. It started out exactly how I expected, and took an unusual turn... But I like it! Was anyone else reminded of how Desmond in LOST was introduced? This new, science-lab guy was introduced in the same format, and whatnot; Just all of a sudden. Not that it's bad in any way, I was just wondering.

Unlike the major networks, I don't think AMC can afford the risk of letting its big shows run loose on the web. They're very kind about reruns, though -- there ought to be some reruns on Friday (perhaps Saturday also).

AMC is doing a marathon of the first 5 eps this Sunday before the finale. blogs.amctv.com/the-walking-dead/2010/11/full-season-marathon.phpSo if you don't plan on moving for 6.5 hours you could do that. Or record them. Was anyone else reminded of how Desmond in LOST was introduced? This new, science-lab guy was introduced in the same format, and whatnot; Just all of a sudden. The characters are certainly different, but the concept is the same. Interesting parallel! I'll have to keep that in mind.

Boo, to that.

I've only seen the first two episodes of this, and so far I've not been massively impressed. The pilot was good, episode two was disappointing. It's not really living up to the comic IMO.
It feels like it's been "mainstreamed" to appeal to a mass audience. The second episode had some loud and annoying characters who weren't in the comic, purely, it seems, to add a bit of drama. The first arc of the comic featured a cast of very naive, well-mannered characters, one of whom (Shane) gradually had a breakdown because of the circumstances they were in. When you add a one-dimensional, raving white supremicist to the group, Shane's arc becomes a bit less meaningful.
I also don't like that Andrea (one of my favourites from the comic) has been made significantly older than in the comics. I suspect this is because TV audiences wouldn't want to see a college-age girl romantically involved with an old man, which is insulting to her and Dale's genuinely touching relationship IMO. My friend tells me the moment where Carl saves Lori with the gun has also been removed, presumably because they can't show little kids with guns.
Like I say, I'm only two episodes in, so I'll continue to give it a chance. It's slightly hypocritical of me, as I'm defending the Buffy reboot in another thread, but I'm put off by the divergences from the comic.

Paul, your worries were echoed by several critics who thought episode two wasn't as strong because it only sketched out archetypal characters without giving them substance. Episode three fixes that in a very powerful way, and it just gets better from there.

I don't think Andrea was made older for any reason other than to allow Laurie Holden to play the part (she's a frequent Darabont collaborator). Any worries I had about an older Andrea were dashed pretty quickly anyway, as Holden delivers such strong work in episodes 4 and 5.
Also, AMC does not mainstream. They do whatever is best for the show, not mass appeal. AMC isn't a network that goes for high ratings, as The Walking Dead is their first real hit (and an unpredictable show going in, ratings wise). Sure Mad Men and Breaking Bad are critical darlings (for good reason), and get decent ratings for cable, but TWD shows the network can set the bar a bit higher for rating potential.
The show is very different from the comic, as it should be. As a massive fan of the comic, I'd have been disappointed if the show was a carbon copy with minor differences. So far, the differences are working for me, more than I imagined they would going in.
And like HH said, after Episode 2 (which was my least favorite episode so far, although I enjoyed it tremendously), the show delivers on every front (and even humanizes Merle).

As I've said before, Andrea is easily my favorite in this show. I love her actress too! I've read the first dozen comics, and really don't mind her age-change; I actually like her as an older woman. Her scenes in Episode 5 with Amy were so sad, and just plain amazing. And it looks like she's getting shot up with something in the finale? o.o I'm worried... Please, don't die, Andrea! My favorites always die! No! ... And there's that shot of her in the shower, which I'm very interesting in. Haha. And is anyone else wondering about Merle? I mean, he's MIA. Did he just up and leave?! He stole their van for God's sake, and I figured he'd be right back at camp wanting a fight... But he's still gone. I figured he'd pop back up at an unexpected timing, but now I'm wondering if that'll even be in this season.

There's a lot of speculation that Merle might end up becoming the Governor. Kirkman already kind of debunked that though. I'd rather see Merle redeem himself, or at least become less crazy, as that is always more fun.
Hopefully he and Daryl stick around for season 2, especially Daryl has his character has been much more realized than Merle's.

I never knew it was a comic book series...
Anyways, I LOVE the show. The second season has already been ordered, but the moronic exec-producer fired the entire writing team...
