Covers: (Updated with HQ images from CBR): Written by Jane Espenson, penciled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, covers by Jeanty and Jo Chen.[/i] "Retreat," Part 3. This month revisit Team Buffy and her army of Slayers at Oz's temple in the mountains of Tibet. Among the yaks, the Slayers and Wiccan troops attempt to suppress dangerous Magicks through meditation and hard labor. Buffy embraces this new lifestyle, but not everyone is convinced that leaving Magicks behind will solve any problems: among them, a resistant Willow, a doubtful Andrew, and a concerned Giles.
For Buffy, the world has not been so peaceful . . . so honest . . . so full of feeling . . . in a long time -- too bad it's not going to stay that way!
Release Date: September 2, 2009Preview:______________________________________________________ Chen's cover is wonderful and although I love Jeanty's arc, I'm not big on his cover at all this time. The solicitation sounds really interesting (but probably isn't do the story justice as it never really does) and I think is probably a sign that we're getting into the thick of the whole magic dilemma. In Anywhere But Here the demon tells Buffy that the end of magic is what she's always tried to achieve and we got that panel of Willow looking upset/weary of this. It seems in this issue Buffy's found a way to escape all that life and magic and Willow isn't for it, or Giles apparently. Are we getting to the root of the Buffy/Willow tension all season? Hmm... I also enjoy the idea of Buffy trying to escape the hardships of her life. The phrase "full of feeling" is particularly interesting. Does this mean Buffy's finally feeling connected? Vamps

Wow! Chen's cover is fantastic! Willow's nose is a bit large, but other than that, aces. The faces are a bit off on Jeanty's cover, but I quite like the concept.
The solicitation sounds really excellent. The idea of Buffy embracing this quiet life of little magic will be really interesting to see. I'd imagine Xander and Dawn will fit in well with Oz's lifestyle too. Sounds like there will be tension with Giles and Willow (not with each other, but with the whole No-Magic bit). If that is true, then that will be an interesting parallel to see: both Giles and Willow on the same side when it comes to magic. That hasn't really happened before, as they often had differing opinions about how magic should be used on the show.
This arc looks like it is really shaping up to be something special. I can't wait for a preview!

Cool Chen cover, not sure what the variant is about though. The solicit is interesting, glad to see that Buffy will be taking on a more active role in this story, hoping to see a lot of interesting character development for her. Btw, I'm I am the only one who's sick of hearing about yaks. It's Tibet, there are yaks. We get it.

Jo has done it again with a brilliant cover!! It would have looked even better if it had more magic happening and not a Giles standing in the way and all. Like issue 3 <3

Pure perfection. It's a beautiful cover for sure!! After all that Buff has been through I can totally imagine her dreaming of a secluded, quiet life. Makes sense and it's bound to cause drama.
I will wait for the HQ versions, to make the button for the index.

I think I have a clear idea of what this arc is about now. They retreat because of either, Twilight, or the public's idea on Slayers in general. Either way, they're at the Temple with Oz who takes them under their wing. To stop twilight from figuring out where they are, they decide not to use any magicks, and help Oz out in Tibet. I think we'll figure out who Twilight is in part 4...YAY YAY YEEEEEEAH!
Great covers. Geanty's covers always put a smile on my face because they are so unique and so interesting...Jo's are just amazing!! They get better everytime!!!!!!

The synopsis reminds me of "Normal Again", where Buffy's life was simplified by Sunnydale and everything connected to her life there being a delusion. It sounds like this is going to be a poignant issue, I like seeing Buffy happy but I'm interested to see what conflict this brings to Buffy and Willow's relationship. Glad to see Giles back in the mix!
It appears to be Kennedy behind Buffy on the variant cover. Jo Chen's cover is beautiful, as usual.
September seems so far away.

First post updated with higher res pics in clickable thumbnails. Not sure if those are the highest we will get, but they'll do for now. I disagree that Willow's schnoz looks a little large... it's actually perfectly proportioned, and Chen's best Willow since the #19 cover. Kinda like that whole pastoral scene in Jeanty's cover... Buffy does look pretty serene. Think it's Faith behind Buffy though... it actually looks more like her to me. Kennedy is viable guess, but I'd imagine that Faith would have more cover time than Kennedy.

Both covers are awesome!!! Too bad Willow's nose is completely off on Jen's cover. It's the only detail that bugs me.

aww wow I love chens cover!!
nice to see more buffy/willow like Anywhere but Here.
Not to sure about the variant, its a nice picture but seems more like inside art than an actual cover.
Not sure what to think about faith in an oversized skirt doing gardening however...at least I assume its faith and not dawn etc.

It's something to ask Georges Jeanty next time there's a Q&A. The few times Faith wore a skirt/dress, it was required thematically (Graduation Day) or she still retained her edge (The Prom), I could never imagine Faith wearing that outfit on the variant cover, and the colouring/hair length resembles Kennedy more than Faith, in my opinion. That said, I was CONVINCED it was Willow on Jo Chen's cover for #27, turns out, not so much.

For whatever reason, Comics Continuum is notorious for posting low quality...grainy resolution pictures. I like to wait till CBR posts them up.

Those are Jo's best Buffy and Willow yet.
Gonna be great to see the whole gang together again. I wonder when Buffy will finally figure out that "Running and Hiding" are not really intended to be long-term parts of Slayer strategy.
It looks more and more like Buffy and Willow are destined to be on opposite sides of the battlefield... that they have their backs turned to each other is telling.

Oh wow, I love the art cover! I'm not up to date with the comics, as I am a bit far from comic shop so only go in every few months for my Buffy/Angel and such comics. I think I'm at 23. But I know all the covers and I reckon this is actually my favourite so far.

Buffy can now be in the presence of Faith and Giles without pitching a tantrum... maybe all this meditation is doing her good.
