Covers: (Hi-res image courtesy of CBR) Written by Jane Espenson, penciled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, covers by Jeanty and Massimo Carnevale.
"Retreat," part 4 of 5. Oz's temple in the Tibetan mountains is no longer a safe retreat for Buffy and her troops. Discovered by Twilight's magical agent, Amy, and bereft of their own magic, the army is preparing for a human war with guns, grenades, missiles . . . and manpads -- it's not a laughing matter. People are about to die. But even without her own magic, Buffy is still a Slayer -- the Slayer -- and she has to lead the way to victory. Or at least . . . live to fight another day.
40 pages, $2.99, in stores on Oct. 7.::PREVIEW::

Wow.
Issue #30: Body count. We're going to be saying goodbye to some friends.
So if Twilight has already found them, what reason do they have to continue avoiding magic? They've actually destroyed their own magic, not just suppressed it? Sounds to me like Willow has left, and possibly taken the Wiccans with her.
So Buffy is still a Slayer even though she has no Slayer magic?

Brilliant cover. Love the colors and the detail on Twilight. I am assuming that is Oz's temple in the background, which doesn't bode well for anyone. Looks like we are in for another great battle, like in WATG.
Heh, Twilight is wearing 3 belts. Can't he find some pants that fit? ;D

Blegh. Hate how spoilerific the solicit is, but it has gotten me extremely excited for what's to come. An actual human war? With guns? It's finally happening. Poor Oz. I'd be pissed at Buffy.
And that cover rocks! I'm sad Jo is taking another break, but this cover is just so good.

So don't mock us with your monkey pants.

For a story that takes place in Tibet/China, there's an awful lot of Japanese "rising sun" imagery in this story so far.
Glad to see Twilight has mastered the classic Supervillain Pose: fists clenched at all times, even when there's no reason.
I was trying to figure out Twilight's identity by studying the outline of his face in the mask, but I'm guessing it's very unlikely Massimo Carnevale is privy to his secret identity.
I wonder how many people in the world have the inside info on who Twilight is?

I wonder how many people in the world have the inside info on who Twilight is? My guess? Joss, Scott, Jeanty, Jo and all of Season 8's writers/upcoming writers. Maybe a few other people at FOX and Dark Horse, but I doubt many do. I'd say no more than 20 people.

Hmm... Exploding/burning train, looks bad for Buffster and c/o.
It looks like he's screaming and clenching his fists.

Hmm... Exploding/burning train, looks bad for Buffster and c/o. That's not a train... it's a mountainside monastery. Which looks even worse for Buffster & Co.

I actually really love this cover. I mean I'll always be Team Jo, but that doesn't mean one can't appreciate a damn good picture of Twilight. I'm not so keen on the background, but the colour on Twilight's clothes etc just looks fantastic. Weird that Twilight is flying off with the sun high in the sky (all his previous outings have been AT TWILIGHT), but maybe that's the point... maybe he's flying away from the sun or something. VAMP!! The issue itself - sounds brilliant, but I too wonder why the guys are actually "bereft" of magic. Either the magic folk have gone or maybe Buffy & co have just made a conscious decision to go cold turkey no matter what.... yeah cause that'll end well.... that's what the First wanted Will to do!!

I was really surprised it was not one of Jo Chen's. I think that Jo should have finished all five covers and THEN take a break. Have someone else paint the covers for the next arc, but whatever. It is very well done, I must admit. Kudos to Massimo Carnevale. I wonder how the 'rising sun' symbol and the 'twilight symbol' connect to one another. Why can't people just leave the Slayers alone? They're living in some monastery with the absence of magic for crying out loud! Is it me or does Twilight look like he's laughing? Douchebag.

Whoa, love the cover. The three belts thing seems like an interesting detail - why do that if it doesn't mean anything? Or else it's just random artistic depiction. But if it does mean something, let's think about all the other three's for this season - Dawn's 3 transformations, 3 is a magic number...
The style of this cover is brilliant, especially the top half with the sun that looks like an ancient cracking mosaic. Fantastic symbolism calling back to the first panel of Season 8 with the sun rising/falling over a view of Earth. Saying that the bright new world Buffy had created with her Slayer army is cracking under the pressure and literally burning up.
"bereft of their own magic" - Willow's gone from Tibet or Willow's been depowered?
"human war" - Ruh roh. Finally good to see some follow-up with humanity's involvement. I'm assuming it's the army contingent that's been working with Twilight all along.
"people are about to die" - This makes me think of Anya calling all the Potentials cannon-fodder. All the Slayers are cannon fodder for this epic fight. Is this the way Twilight stops the Slayer line? Isn't this kinda what the First wanted all along? Because now all the Potentials are Slayers and if you kill all the Slayers, then does the power dissipate without any Potentials (of the right age or whatever circumstances) to become a Slayer?
