Finalized cover images are now up at Dark Horse. Click on the bold text to be linked to Carnevale's or Jeanty's covers. And to further tease you, Jeanty claimed that the shite is about to hit the fan and that things will get really intense, starting now. Paraphrasing of course. Well, it would kind of suck if things didn't get intense now. "Hey, I just got a call from Twilight. He says everything's cool. Willow... Amy says hi." And the next 10 issues feature a ferocious backgammon match between Giles and Andrew.

You never know, some people may find backgammon very fascinating...

I just wish I had a comic shop around my corner today. I'll have to order the issue in Germany and wait at least a week until I hold it in my hands ...

ok.......so only read it once but my first impression is I felt kinda let down, I was really hoping for a Twilight reveal......sorry guys...not this time....maybe next MONTH!!! The issue was tense though..WAR. Maybe a Death ( not sure yet) I'll have to re-read it to get my full impression though.

Nah, I knew the Twilight reveal wouldn't be in this issue. I wasn't expecting that. I really, really enjoyed this installment! The character moments mid-battle were strong. And though Buffy didn't say much, I knew exactly where she was emotionally. Jeanty's subtle facial expressions really sold me on the emotions behind this. Just like last month, Xi and I will be co-writing a review for the blog, so expect to see more thinky thoughts there!

Spoilers and stuffs!
Really liked this issue. Not as good as last month's, but stronger than the first two of the arc. We all knew war was coming, but even after seeing Georges' cover and the preview pages, I was shocked to see actual WAR war: trenches, gunfire, explosions... not something I'd expect in the Buffyverse, but things definitely aren't the way they were. Those pages were definitely exciting.
I agree with Emmie about the little characters moments in the middle of all the chaos. The moment where Xander and Dawn were watching Buffy standing alone, saying how strong Buffy really is, which led to hugging and a close up of Buffy's sad eye. Probably my favorite moment. Loved commander-y Faith. And poor Bay, hope she pulls through. Loved when Oz snapped at Buffy.
There were a few writing issues I had though, especially near the end how everything just happened to work so perfectly: "Oh I looked this word up and it means...", "Bay showed me where they are", "just feel angry". The whole Monroe storyline was just weird too, kind of pointless after this. But other than that, this issue was great!
"Will that work? Going from pulling back to... full-throttle forward?" "It does when I punch someone."
Hehe.

Overall, I liked this issue. It kind of felt like the middle part of an episode where nothing HUGE happens but we are leading in to something more. I wasn't thinking :Holy Cow, what a great issue! But more thinking, "I can't wait for the next one.".
There were definitely some good moments. I like the Buffy/Giles interaction, it feels like they are getting better. The Xander/Dawn moments were also interesting, almost like they are truly a couple (without really telling anyone yet, but not hiding it too well either).

So too much action.
I liked the issue, but I didn't think the character moments were enough. I do agree that this issue only exists to take us into the next one (and hopefully a Twilight reveal---FINALLY!!)
So far this arc has really given us a good mix of emotions and genres. Especially the two issues before this one. This one wasn't bad though....I just felt like it didn't hold its own up against its brothers.
On the plus side, though, this really did feel like a big Buffy battle. There were so many characters to follow that it would have been spectacular on screen, but might have been a little too busy for the page. I still liked it a lot, though. Hopefully Bay will pull through.
The Monroe thing DID seem silly. It just all happened so fast. I wish that it had made a little more sense, but it's okay.
Buffy had some good one liners. I think I have to go home and read the issue again.

the issue was pretty striaghtforward as far as everything that happened no real mysteries except the thing about where the magic went. What do you suppose those giant...things are gonna do lol?

Okay. I'm sorry. I love Joss Whedon. Out of every writer I've ever worshipped, his work has just GOTTEN to me. It's great. They played Dr. Horrible today in my New Media class, and I basically cheered. And my favorite Whedon work? The Buffyverse. It's close to my heart, and, in my opinion, one of the best stories ever told. And I've had my issues with Season Eight since #17, that's for sure. It's see-sawed from bad to really great, but it's been consistently (at least) good for a while now. But after reading this issue, I don't know what to think. It felt like BUFFY as done by Michael Bay if Bay had a slightly better ear for dialogue. It was a mess of action, melo-drama, and people who resemble the characters I've come to love fighting and killing faceless humans. What was the big end to the whole getting rid of magic thing? Not showing the world that the slayers were demons. It was to start using guns and torpedos against an army. What was the RESULT of the whole getting rid of magic thing? Colorful goddesses coming out of the ground. What? Super cartoony, and utterly non-Buffyesque. In tone, characterization, and even down to the ever changing, maybe non-existent theme, this is not the Buffy I've grown to love for seven seasons and a whole bunch of wonderful comics. I don't know what to think. It's the same team. Is Whedon spread too thin? Maybe. Dollhouse is great. Maybe that is taking up all of his time. But what about Espenson? Her last two issues were very good, and the one before that was also decent. And "Briar Rose" was phenomenal. What is going on? I'm just left scratching my head. Are the flaws inherent in the plot? Is the story just too big? Whatever it is, my suspension of belief was completely blown, and it's breaking my heart.

So godesses coming out of the earth broke yor suspension of disbelief more then Giant Dawn versus Mechadawnzilla fighting in the middle of tokyo?
The comic-book medium is on a bigger scale than a TV show. Sure, if you liked Buffy because of it's grounded basis, you're not going to find what you seek in the comics. It's like Firefly vs. Serenity. Serenity is an awesome movie, but the medium impose limitations the TV show did not have and remove some the TV show had, giving a very different feel to it.
To conclude, I don't think it's the story or the plot you don't like. It's just that you can't identify with the new medium. It's ok, it happens to me sometimes. Th X-files movies, for example, never did it for me, prefered the TV show format.
P.S.: Dollhouse isn't great, IMO. It's good sometimes, but not great. Buffy, Firefly, Dr. Horrible. Those are great.
