Covers (HQ): "Written by Jane Espenson, penciled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, covers by Jeanty and Adam Hughes.
"Retreat," part 5 of 5. The war between Twilight's minions and Buffy's army rages in the Tibetan mountains. Bereft of their magic, the girls [Wiccans and Slayers] face an epic battle in which they have no hope of victory. Buffy has already done the retreat thing once, plus also put herself and her army into hiding . . . What can she do now that there is no magic to help them escape from another losing battle?
40 pages, $2.99, in stores on Nov. 4."------------------------------------------------------------------- I gleaned this little tidbit off CBR's coverage of the Dark Horse panel at SDCC '09, and it's pretty much confirmation of what fans have been expecting for a while now: Other interesting things to note, just in case you haven't already read the other threads: 1. Joss will write #31 to kick off the next arc; Brad Meltzer will be on writing duties on the rest. 2. Confirming the break month between "Retreat" and the next arc, Allie announced that the Willow one-shot that he mentioned in a recent Q&A will be co-written by Joss for December. 3. Allie knows how S8 will end, and what the framework of S9 will be. All in all... kinda wishing I was at SDCC this year... CLICK for the source. ::PREVIEW::

I'm really excited and nervous about how the season is shaping up. Making fans "freak out and really angry" is good storytelling but the idea is freaking me out already. Man, Scott really knows how to amp stuff up.

Should we be preparing the torches and pitchforks? We love you, Joss. Why must you hurt us so? ETA: The scary thing is, the situation is going to be so bad by the end of #30... and then we've got a whole year (almost) until the end of the season from that point. I wonder how they'll manage to keep up that level of intensity for that long, in 22-page doses every 4 weeks.

i reckon something'll happen to one of the scoobies. I'm expecting either a death or we find out who twilight is. Seeing as i thought we were supposed to find out the identity of twilight this arc (i think, i may have made that up though) my money is now on a scooby twilight. The prediction is Xander

It occurs to me that #30 will hit the shelves the first week in November, with all of its terrible consequences for Buffy & Co... and then #31 doesn't come out until January. So we have to go the entire holiday season leaving poor Buffy in such a predicament.

Wait, is the break before or after Joss's #31?

Wait, is the break before or after Joss's #31? I'd guess before #31 since the this issue is out in November and the Willow one-shot is out in December. It'd be something to fill in the month like Tales of the Vampires did.

Meh, the break doesn't bother me at all because the Willow One-Shot is dealing with season 8 stuff anyway. She's a main character and I'm intrigued about Saga Vasuki so I’m still looking forward to it a great deal.

Im hoping whatever happens makes me freak out because season 8 has been lacking in that department for me. Hopefully it is the Twilight reveal (please be Hank Summers!) and not Willow going off the deep end again.

I have a feeling #31 will be mostly about Twilight, so I wouldn't be surprised if we found out who Twilight was right at the end of issue #30.

I want to know what the "major transformational change for Buffy" will be that Scott mentioned in the podcast.
I wonder if we might see an "Empty Places" type rift between her and all the other members of her group.

It was enough watching it in 'Empty Places' and to see it again would make me wanna tear my comic into tiny pieces.

Giles is really smart, I think he will figure out who twighlight is and then xander will kill giles and i would be all, NO WAY

I have a feeling that the "big shocker" will have to do with Willow considering she will get a one-shot issue. Maybe the one-shot will explain her actions if she does something wrong to one of the Scoobies.

Nah, the Willow one-shot is set way before "Retreat."

Nah, the Willow one-shot is set way before "Retreat." While the one-shot is supposed to be a kinda exposition piece on where Willow's at this season, it's the very fact that it's an exposition piece that may explain why the big shocker is a Willow moment. Not saying that it is, but placing it that way in the release schedule may be deliberate.

Not saying that it is, but placing it that way in the release schedule may be deliberate. Very true. Willow may do something huge, something that changes everything (like, oh maybe betray Buffy), that then requires some backstory, which her stand alone may provide. I have a feeling that if the issue was just going to explore her relationship with Saga, then they could do that with periodic flashbacks in the regular issues. I think something else is possibly in the cards here.

I'm pretty sure the Willow standalone won't contain anything absolutely necessary to understanding season 8... that kind of stuff needs to all remain within the main 40 issues so it forms a coherent whole, on its own, when it's finished.
I think we'll find out about Kennedy's mystical death, the origins of Willow's relationship with SV and who she is exactly.
But any big boffo information will happen within the main sequence of issues, I'm sure.
