I love seeing Joss Whedon alumni on different shows. I wonder if they give him any credit to their careers. Mad Men is a really great show that has captured the late 50's / early 60's in the US quite well. It is an Emmy award winner as well. So, no wonder I feel like doing the Snoopy Dance when I seen the stars that I saw first on Buffy, Angel and/or firefly. Here are the ones I have see so far: Vincent Kartheiser (Angel): is Pete Campbell, a main character on Mad Men Christina Hendricks (Angel and Firefly): is Joan Holloway, another main character on Mad Men Darby Stanchfield (Angel): is Helen Bishop Andy Umberger (Buffy, Angel and Firefly): is Dr. Arnold Wayne Pretty amazing, I think to have four cast members that have all appeared in Angel.

What is it about though. Okay there is a few Whedon related faces but is it any good. I saw it on the shops and was going to buy it but wasn't sure if I'd like it. Has anyone actually seen it? Can someone give me the jist or compare it to another show that is maybe similar. Thanks Mad Men is easily one of the best show's I've ever watched. I absolutely love it. For a basic breakdown, it is about an Advertising firm in New York City (Madison Avenue, hence the term Mad Men) called Sterling Cooper in the early 1960's; the series starts with a slight focus on the election of Kennedy. The main protagonist is Donald Draper, who is one of the more fascinating leads I have seen in a while. In one episode he can go from a suave, brilliant Creative Director, to a cowardly, weak man in the span of a few minutes; especially in the first season when we learn more about his past. John Hamm plays him brilliantly. As for the rest of the cast, they are all equally good. Vincent Kartheiser and January Jones, in particular, are the other cast stand outs for me. Christina Hendricks is great as well, but she is not featured as much as she should be. If anyone is a fan of dialogue-driven dramas, I would definitely recommend Mad Men.

I'm from Scotland and I think I read somewhere that it starts on BBC sometime in February so I'll keep a look out for it and if it's any good I'll give the first season a look out in the shops. I saw it in HMV just last week but wasn't sure. One quick question though... What show would you compare it too. House with a 60's twist, Life On Mars or am I way off??

Neither fit the description - are you familiar with West Wing (it ended a few years back - and the actress who portrayed Zoe Bartlet on WW is Peggy on MM)? It is more like that in terms of dialogue and reality, but set in the 1960's. It also reminds me of the feel of the movie JFK (with Kevin Costner) in terms of getting the era correct but neither of them really do it justice. I think it stands as an excellent study of middle class America and life in the Big Apple at the time. I am pretty sure that no other country experienced the 50's / 60's in quite the same way. Check it out on Wikipedia where they give a good synopsis. And I absolutely love the opening screen graphics. Wyndam - I'm passing the baton to you to give some other examples to compare it to. You described it perfectly.

Yeah West Wing is a pretty good comparison. Both are similar in that they are purely dialogue driven drama's. It is kind of hard to compare Mad Men to other shows because it is so unique (60's era/Advertising).
And I love the main titles as well! I could listen to that music all day long.

Titles be damed, I came for the Hendricks! And she is great! I remember reading something by the costumer on angel, I think, where she said it was a real treat outfitting an actress with a full-figure. Not the typical size 1 or 2.

I had completely forgotten about this show after reading a very favourable review in The Guardian a few years ago. Must check it out. Thanks for the prod Sagewoman!

I just finished the first season last night, I wanna get caught up before season three starts, and I must say... It was awesome! Sme things were a bit odd for my taste, like Betty giving a piece of her hair to a little boy, but I really liked the first season!

Also, to add to the Jossverse actors in this show, the man in 2.03 is the owner of The Magic Bullet Book Store in Angel season four. Im 100% sure it is him. I thought it was neat to see another person from the show on it.

OMG, I love this show and I can't believe I haven't seen this thread before. The story and characters are just awesome! I'm on season 2 now, and lapping it up. Also, I totally did not know that Christina Hendricks was a Jossverse alum! Yowza, she is a veerrrrrrrryy good reason to watch.

She plays Yolanda/Saffron/Bridget aka YoSafBridg on Firefly. She is also a YOWZA very good reason to watch there as well. I mean, really good reason.

I couldn't disagree more. I've seen the first three episodes of S1 and it is currently riding high as the best thing I'm watching at the moment! I love the lead character, the humour is right up my alley and Vincent Kartheiser has really impressed me (far more than he did on Angel).

A bunch of my cousins were raving about it, so I netflixed it. I was less than thrilled. I don't know if I disliked the premise or the characters or the dialogue or what, since I watched it around Easter, and I have more or less forgotten it, but I didn't watch past the pilot. Maybe one day I'll try it again since everyone seems to love it.
