Xi, We few, we happy few...
Andrew, the far back of her neck shouldn't be in shadow. It shouldn't be there. It should be forward, the slope down beginning underneath her ear. Instead it extends further back.
Ok, please anyone else who sees this proportion argument chime in so I'm not alone with Xi here.

You're not the only one Emmie, after my initial reaction of Holy Jumbo Boobs, Batman! My second reaction was, why does Willow look so.... weird? And unnatural? I think its a combination of having a what looks like a line-backer's neck and an extra long torso. Just looking at the proportion of Willow's mid-length, it looks like Willow would be a very tall girl standing up.
And dude, what's up with her fingers? There all.... pointy and weird.
But other than that, its a pretty picture. For some reason, I feel like breaking out in Wicked show tunes though.
And is it me or are the symbols in Jeanty's art spelling something? Its kinda like looking into your alphabet soup and trying to figure out what the soup gods are trying to tell you, except this times freaky old ancient letters.

The variant is by Karl Moline, who's doing the interiors, not Jeanty. And about Wicked... it finally hit me that Saga Vasuki=Elphaba. Glad we're on the same page. EDIT: As for Willow's fingers... they are kinda weird looking... but due to the awkward positioning of them in front of her girl bits, it kinda looks like Willow's doing a "spell" on herself...

Oh, right. Karl Moline, I forgot he was doing this issue. My bad. Thanks for the clarification.
And maybe my before analysis on Willow's neck being a line-backer was a bit strong, but it definitely looks thicker than AH's or at least, a weird angle.

I really don't like this cover, at all. While it's pretty to look at and all, colors etc, the proportions are off, as well as the angling of Willow's body.
I'm not trying to sound like an art snob but as an art student myself it doesn't look like Jo drew Willow with proper angles in mind. It doesn't look like any real human could be in that position frankly. From how her head is directed, and especially her shoulders and curvature of her back.
With that said, Jo has had small errors like this in a few other covers too so I'm not gonna fault her too badly. This cover is really pretty, flaws and all.

I guess at times I'm glad not to know anything about art, except that I know what I like.
I just love this cover.

Hi-res covers subbed in the clickable thumbnails. They're slightly bigger than the previous ones, but bigger=better, right? ;p Found them on CBR this morning. Oh... and according to the CBR solicits... the price tag on this one is $3.50. Hmmm... for the same standard 40-pages? Why? Unless some of the ads are removed, there's no real reason to jack up the price... yeah, it's the Scrooge in me popping up early.
EDIT: It seems that they are really hoping that tacking on the Whedon tag will sell more issues. Look at the last two lines of the updated solicitation... if that's not redundancy, I need to look up the definition again.

it is of course, beautiful!!!! i just don't know how my mom is going to react when she spots it. Probably that her youngest daughter is buying mythological lesbian porn...... lol my mom just saw my new desktop image which of course is this new chen cover and well she said to me: sue if didn't know you i will say that the owner of your computer is a lesbian... i love both covers i know chen is no alex ross. personally i believe that it would have been better if the characters did not resemble the actors. they are just people doing their job. Don't get me wrong i love me some sarah michelle any time and sometimes i do called her buffy :S but comics and tv... they are just two different medias. and i like them both...

These solicits are cool, and I can't help looking at them... but it occurs to me that the ones for #31 will be coming out when we still haven't seen #30 yet.
I wonder how they can possibly do the solicitations for that issue without spoiling #30.

I think it's sad how much people criticise Jo Chen's artwork. Her work is beautiful, yet all people seem to do is complain that likenesses and proportions aren't perfect. It's like they're angry at her for not producing flawless, photorealistic images. She's a human, not a camera. This Willow cover isn't perfect, the proportions are slightly awkward. But the overall piece is still gorgeous and powerful, not many comics are lucky enough to have covers like this. It's not my favourite Buffy cover but I still love it. EDIT: It seems that they are really hoping that tacking on the Whedon tag will sell more issues. Look at the last two lines of the updated solicitation... if that's not redundancy, I need to look up the definition again. Oh, don't get me started on the whoring of Joss Whedon's name. Marvel are guilty of it with Runaways and X-Men. Check out these covers, I find them downright obscene. The actual series title plays second fiddle to Joss Whedon.

Jo's cover reminds me of Greek goddesses. It's very picturesque, very beautiful. I don't mind the weirdness so much when I look at it like that. Moline's cover doesn't do much for me, although I like it better than most of Georges's covers. Who knows, I may pick up a copy of both.

Paul: I've noticed that before too... but I just found the triple mention of Joss' name rather beyond the usual point of redundancy.

Paul: I've noticed that before too... but I just found the triple mention of Joss' name rather beyond the usual point of redundancy. It's the fact they repeat themselves one sentence after the other as well. "Joss Whedon and his Fray co-creator Karl Moline reunite for this special one-shot! Joss Whedon returns!" Do you think Joss Whedon was involved in this?

Oh wow The proportions might be off, though they are sometimes in Chen's work. The product is beautiful, even if realistically flawed. Oh, speaking of realistically flawed, when did Willow get a boob job? But really, I love it. Now I'm just wondering if this cover fits a "PG-13" standard........... I may just want to use it for a sig And as for the variant, it seems kind of "meh". Can anyone tell me the significance of the runes?

The runes are probably significant in the story... but I really hate the style of the cover. It may work for interior work, but that's not what a cover should look like. You can technically show an exposed boob and still have it be PG-13. Some butt too. And if the comics are considered PG-13, this cover should be no different, considering the scene shown here was first seen in Richards' #10 interiors.
What is it with Willow and snakes anyway? First she coughs up one in "The Bargaining, Pt. 1" and now she's all wrapped up in snakey love. Makes my skin crawl... I've an inexplicable fear of snakes...

I think it's safe to say Willow's frog fear doesn't extend to snakes.

This one-shot is part of Dark Horse's "One Shot Wonders" compaign thingy, and it was announced at SDCC that they would be $3.50, so I doubt it's permanent or just because of Whedon's name. That'd be ridiculous.

In defense of critiquing art, one of the most basic lessons is how to draw the human form. And Jo Chen is cooed at for her realistic likenesses. When her covers so blatantly ignore the human form that it borders on inhuman (and not talking Vasuki here) then hell yeah, I'm going to criticize. It's still beautiful work...the other areas that aren't so majestically flawed.
Like Rebecca wanting to use it as a sig, I would want that too if not for the linebacker neck. As it is, I can't look at the cover without zeroing in on it and it ruins it for me. Meh.
What's shocking to me is that fan artists who lack Chen's talent don't make this sort of mistake with the dimensions of the human body.
Now compare Chen's work to Alex Garner's for Angel - especially the cover that has Angel half-dusting as he disappears. Both Chen and Garner do their art on the computer. Knowing that, I'd say I vastly prefer Garner's finished product for that Angel dusting cover over this Chen one. Because they both strive for a realistic depiction, yet Garner actually achieves it imo.
