I like the old comic style of the variant cover. I like willow's pose in the first cover, but I'm not a fan of that Tibetan demon thing trying to break through her frocefield (or whatever the hell it's doing). I agree that the look of the demon is an acquired taste, but she had to go off a designs by ancient Tibetans so it's not her fault.

i truly love chen's cover. i do find the the demoness quite breath taken. it is an awesome picture.
and i want to print the variant cover and make a big poster to hang it on my living room or something.
maybe i already have the so called taste for that type of art (for the demon). because my mother in law is a born jewish hare krishna by conversion and the art in that religion is pretty similar.

Apprently this issue is called Retreat: Epilogue and is not a one shot but is part of the next arc hence why it is issue 31

The way I understand it is that 31 would be a one-shot, Meltzer's arc was remaining 5 issues rather than being cut to 4, and Joss's arc would remain at 5 issues (thus resulting in a 41-issue season).
Calling it "Retreat: Epilogue" seems kind of inappropriate, since it will actually be starting off the next TPB (or maybe right after the Willow one-shot). I think it's more likely to be a junction between the two arcs (like a landing on a flight of stairs) rather than just a reference back to 26-30. It sounds to me like it will be a chance to explore the psychological effect on Buffy of what happens in #30.
I'm not sure Scott would be keeping the title a secret if "Epilogue" was all it was.

Maybe, maybe not. Apparently there may be a two-parter thrown in after Meltzer's arc: So if they keep to 41 issues, assuming that Meltzer's arc is 5 issues long, then Joss' closer will have to be only 4 issues long. I think I remember an interview or something saying that Joss is doing #31, and Meltzer was going to do #32-#35. But if his arc is as complicated as it sounds, then perhaps it's still 5 issues long, but with Joss penning the bridge. Details... apparently we won't get those until #30 comes out. At the very least.

I don't really know how I feel about these new covers... I guess I'll have to come back to them tomorrow. It's 2:00am and I can't think straight.

At the very least. I assumed the two-parter would be outside the regular numbering, like the Willow one-shot. Probably because Joss will be hard-pressed to get five scripts completed, and the art team will need some extra lead time with the last arc.

That is a possibility. Guess it's a good question to keep for Scott for next round, considering some of the spoilery bits will be out by then.
EDIT: Or not. According to the Wizard magazine article, Meltzer's arc will be 5 issues, and so will Joss'... so I guess #31 is the extra issue. Guess Meltzer's arc couldn't be simplified to a 4 issue arc as was planned at one time, so he still gets 5 books to tell his tale.

Holy smokes! Those covers are awesome. I wonder why the Goddesses turned on Buffy and the gang, could it be that they're angry at them for tipping the balance of good and evil? Speaking of Goddesses, weren't the elements or whatever in issue four Goddesses? I hope we see more of them, they were really interesting. I can't believe I missed this, I didn't see this posted on Whedonesque.

The Elementals (or whatever it is they were) were never established to be goddesses. I took them to be more like different facets of magic.

If there's a 1-shot and a 5 issue arc coming up, TPB #7 is likely going to be massive. Allie has already confirmed that the Willow 1-shot needs to go in there as well.

No, Allie said that they're keeping those under wraps for now. The title for the next arc will also be withheld in the solicitation for #32, so as to not be too spoilerish.

wow so then it wouldnt be to far off as to say we might get a reveal in the first issue and have the better part of the arc exploring some facets of who he/she/it is. Well I'm crossing my fingers

The whole "secrecy of the titles" thing is too much for me (as in, exciting). They were so spoilerish they can't even be revealed until the release? But that's Joss/Scott for ya.
