I agree. I still feel Buffy went through a lot of development in seasons 1-6. Actually, in Season 6, Buffy went through more development than in any other season, IMO.

In a lot of ways, Season 6 is like its own completely separate character arc for Buffy. Almost like there's one arc that runs from "Welcome to the Hellmouth" through "The Gift," then a season-long derailment before the arc picks up at a very similar place.

I'm not sure which out of Buffy and Willow would get my vote for most character development, but the core scoob that definitely wouldn't get my vote is Xander. A character that is introduced in the first season as a guy with insecurities who can't really face the future for fear of his own shortcomings ditching the obvious love of his life at the altar six years later because of his inability to reconcile his insecurities and face his future cannot win "Most Growth in the Series" award for my money.

if i had too chose i would definitely choose Anya, because her development went strength to strength, she was a demon then she was a human. Anya has trouble conversing with everyone , most likely because of her new human feelings. She was mixed in to a society that she doesn't know and she need to adapted in our society. Chosen especially when she inspired herself that she was fighting with humans against the Turok Hans. When Anya dies royalties of fighting against the humans. Brilliant.

For the most dramatic turns, I'd say Spike. He went in so many radical directions in a short space of time. He grew very quickly compared to the rest of the cast.
The major characters all got good material. Willow and Xander basically had the same growth into adults. Xander was definately slower and less eventful, but it was probably the most realistic arc on the show. Willow really grew through the first 5 seasons, then we saw her turn into a twat before regressing into a a shy girl again. Season 8 is making her her own woman again, which is nice.
Buffy had a fairly simple arc of coming to terms with being alone in the world, going through phases of of trying to fit in, looking for companions, trying to seperate herself to eventually taking her own initiative and making girls like her by sharing her power (doesn't it seem far more selfish when you say it like that? lol).

My personal opinion is that Spike grew the most during the course of the show. He went from trying to kill Buffy to getting the chip implanted in his brain to falling in love with Buffy to enduring the demon trials and getting re-ensouled to fighting by Buffy's side to saving the world in chosen.
I know SO many characters grew in BTVS, But Spike is such a rich character. There are so many layers to him. He is a vampire, a demon..but for a demon to do what he did even if it was for Buffy and Buffy alone..that takes alot of "stones" as Spike would say. He was willing to give up the dark side to be a better man..to fight on the side of the warriors of good.
