Hey all!
Sorry about the lateness... long day at work pretty much sums it up.
Anyway, new issue, new Q&A with Jeanty.
Anyway, rules are simple: Maximum of three (3) questions per member until your previous questions are answered. This is to account for the possibility that there may be a delay. Keep it clean, keep it civil. Simple right? Entries are welcome until I post a closing post. ALL QUESTIONS THAT MAY SPOIL TWILIGHT'S IDENTITY FOR THE UNINFORMED MUST BE POSTED IN SPOILER TAGS[/SIZE][/B].
Anyone who's reading this and not a member, I'm accepting questions at wenxina@slayalive.com. Feel free to send me your questions and I'll add them to the queue with credit to you.
Alright... GO!
*NOTE: Before you ask your question(s), you may wanna check back HERE to make sure that that they haven't been asked before.
Oh, and since Emmie and I enjoy pimping each other's work out, please do check in on the Q&A with Scott Allie for Issue 31.
Also, check out my short e-mail interview with Jeanty HERE.
1. Hellbound Hyperion: Georges, #31 "Turbulence" was outstanding, both for you and for Joss. So I'm just gonna ask a simple question about it: did you have any favorite panels from this issue? Because I wept openly at the panel when Buffy takes to the skies in front of Xander, Kennedy, and Dawn. In my opinion, it's one of your best panels from S8.
Georges: Wow. Thanks. It's always a goal of any artist to move the viewer through art, and by those kind words, it sounds like I've done my job. It was an emotional issue and with Joss at the helm you know it's going to strike that resonance. I really enjoy doing the Joss scripted issues. These are his characters and he knows what they say (or maybe they tell him?) it was my charge to make sure I could get the point across visually. At this point in our working relationship there's very little description from Joss about the characters. All you have to do is read his script and, I think if you're familiar with the Buffyverse, you can see what and how these characters are supposed to act like. It really is a great joy to illustrate these books and I think at this point I'm getting the hang of it, if only I had this from the beginning, I would have done those first few issues much more differently.
2. Hellbound Hyperion: What was your favorite moment writing-wise (for #31)? Joss scripts are full of gems, of course, but which one shone the most to you in this issue?
Georges: Like everyone else, I'm sure, it's the dialog. I knew when I got to the point where Buffy and Xander are talking in the courtyard that I had my job cut out for me. The emotional resonance was there in the script and Joss had written little notes to me in the script that this should have an emotional impact. As a fan I was hanging on Xander's every word because I kept thinking this is what he's waited for years and know it's there and he's into another Summers girl! I especially like the part where Xan comes off as a little offended. You want me, now? I rate right under being gay for a potential romantic interest! I don't know where Joss houses all this history for his characters, whether he has them on cue cards or saves them on a file, but he always manages to inject the history of these guys in a way that makes you go, 'oh yeah, that's right!'
3. bamph:
Georges: Well, worried seems a little heavy handed. There is a reason that Twilight is who he is and because of that it will affect the ending of Season 8. I think after all this is said and done, the question of who Twilight is isn't as important as what that means for the future of vampires and Slayers. This is cataclysmic stuff we're talking about here. Like I've said, you're really going to want a Season 9 after Season 8 is over. This is going to take the Scoobies in a whole new direction, I promise you.
4. bamph:
Georges:
5. bamph: What's your thoughts on how the Buffy/Xander/Dawn triangle was resolved in today's issue?I thought the whole thing was handled really well.
Georges: That's one of Joss' specialties. He's so good at the character dynamics. I thought it was handled really well, if for nothing else to show that Xander has grown up. Could you imagine the Xander of Season 1 having a conversation like that with Buffy? It reminded me when Xander had the talk with Dawn about being extraordinary in Season 7. Joss handled it in just the way where it didn't make Buffy look bad for saying what she says and Xander doesn't come off as condescending for saying what he says. Great piece of writing. So you can imagine how intimidated I was to have to illustrate it.
6. AndrewCrossett: Does the Twilight symbol hold any clues as to what's really going on, and if so, are they clues we would be able to figure out based on what we already know?
Georges: Yes. Maybe.
7. bishopcruz: Loving your work on this and Manhunter as well (Manhunter has been really, really good). Considering how hectic it has been to just get Buffy out regular, how has it been having to do a few more pages each month? How do you get all of it done with your schedule? Do you do Buffy and Manhunter at the same time, one then the other?
Georges: Well, I didn't. I started off the Manhunter back ups in DC comic's Streets of Gotham, but because my scheduling was so tight there was no way I cold have sustained the Manhunter story. I had to give it up after 3 issues. I felt so bad. I really liked the character and was getting into the story, but it really was affecting my Buffy commitment. I hope some time down the line DC invites me back for something else, I had loads of fun with the Editors, Mike Marts and Janelle Siegel, and there was the slightest hint of Buffy in the Manhunter character, don't you think? Some people can do 2 books a month. Sadly, that is not me.
9. collex: Hi Georges. This week I cracked open (for the umpteenth time) my copy of Watchmen and began to read it. Funnily, it dawned on me suddenly how much similarity there is between Twilight's costume and Rorschach's one. Especially the mask. Am I seeing an inspiration were there is none, or am I on something?
Georges:
10. bamph:
Georges: That is a great idea! I wouldn't be against it. I would love to see that sort of thing, and not all the covers have been done yet, so who knows!

13. wenxina: I'm throwing my last one in as a book keeping question, so we all kinda know how far along things are on the production side of things. Just heard that the script for #35 isn't even in yet, but that you had turned in pages for #33. Does that mean you're hard at work on #34 now, or is there still some tweaking going on for #33?
Georges: Nope, I'll be done with 34 by the end of next week. Wouldn't you like to come by the studio right about now..? I should be starting #35 soon after. So you can see when I tell you Twilight's reveal was really just the tip of this Buffyverse iceberg! Prepare yourselves, people this ride is gonna get intense!

3. bamph:
I'm sure you know that the leak that Angel is Twilight has cracked the Buffy fandom. I think most of us are waiting to see how the story actually plays out. As Scott said in interviews, there is a lot we don't know and wrong questions are being asked. We know Angel is Twilight but we don't know why or how and what that actually means. But should fans really be worried?
Georges: Well, worried seems a little heavy handed. There is a reason that Twilight is who he is and because of that it will affect the ending of Season 8. I think after all this is said and done, the question of who Twilight is isn't as important as what that means for the future of vampires and Slayers. 4. bamph:
Joss having you draw Buffy leaning into Angel more than Spike in issue 3. Was this setup for Twilight being revealed as Angel since it would hurt Buffy so much because she still loves him and what's your opinion of Angel being Twilight?
Georges:
I think that situation in issue 3 was more aesthetics. IMO, it's no secret that Buffy loves Angel more than Spike so having her lean into him just made more sense. It wasn't a set up per se, but more a visual treat as to what goes on in the mind of Buffy Summers. I was disappointed about the premature reveal. This was a really cool secret that all of the people involved with Season 8 have kept for like 3 years! And just 2 months shy of its reveal, this happens. How could you not be disappointed? The greatest thing about the reveal was that was all anybody talked about was "Who's Twilight?!" When in fact the real questions are going to come after he's been revealed. It was almost like having the reader look one direction while all this other stuff was going on and you don't know that until you read the remaining issues. It was a great set up. While there's still chills and thrills in store, people are more ready for it.
5. bamph: What's your thoughts on how the Buffy/Xander/Dawn triangle was resolved in today's issue?I thought the whole thing was handled really well.

Funnily, it dawned on me suddenly how much similarity there is between Twilight's costume and Rorschach's one. Especially the mask. Am I seeing an inspiration were there is none, or am I on something?
Georges:
Rorschach's mask is constantly changing. Like the ink blots, it's a different form every time you see it, so I think you might be reading in a little more on that one. What Joss wanted for the Twilight costume was something that would obscure his face like a mask. We talked about having a mask over the eyes but it was apparent Angel is distinctive in so many ways you guys would have figured him out as soon as you saw him. Joss mentioned the masks that Wrestlers wear and from there I started designing different types of masks (some of which found their way in the Buffy Sketch Book #2 that you can still get at www.kabalounge.com! Shameless plug!) It was just something that I played around with until Joss saw something he liked. With the mask as it is I did something very simple. I just outlined the human face with a line starting form the top of the head then around the eyes and mouth. Like I said, deceptively simple.
10. bamph:
Since Angel is Twilight and Twilight is wearing comic book superhero/villain garb and Angel is always compared to Batman even on his own show, any chance we'll see a homage cover to a Batman cover featuring Twilight/Angel?
Georges: That is a great idea! I wouldn't be against it. I would love to see that sort of thing, and not all the covers have been done yet, so who knows!
11. wenxina:
Assuming that you had to draw some Buffy/Twilight talky scenes, did you go back to previous seasons, like S2 and S3 for reference material? Body language? Facial expressions? Are there any easter eggs that fans should be on the lookout for?
Georges:
Yes, I dug up a lot of photos when Angel was on Buffy and on his own show. I have had to get very acquainted with 'the Dark Avenger'. There are a lot of scenes with Angel and Buffy and it's all pretty intense. I'm really interested to read what people have to say once they pick up the issues where Angel comes into the fold. Easter Eggs..? I think the great thing about doing that sort of thing is when you find it on your own and not expecting to, or reading after the fact that there was something you might have missed and going back to read the issue. So let's table this question for a later date, shall we? (Menacing laugh inserted here) Bwhaaa haaa haa!
12. wenxina:
And going back to that joke about you always drawing Angel with too much forehead (I think it was Joss who did that... can't believe he actually threw that out there all that time ago... don't have the reference handy, but he did jest about something to that effect), would you say that drawing tall, dark, and broody is easy, or do you struggle with his manly features?
Georges:
I always struggle with new characters to the book. I'm involved with drawing Angel right now and I think he's getting easier for me as I go on. I'm sure by the end of Season 8 I'll feel like I could draw Angel in my sleep, but right now it's a little bit of a task, and none of it is because of his forehead! Joss' jest just shows you how mischievous the man can be. He knew all along what he was saying and while he joked about it he never said Angel wouldn't be in the comic!
13. wenxina: I'm throwing my last one in as a book keeping question, so we all kinda know how far along things are on the production side of things.
