It's not that the book is out of order it's that its so obvious that it wasn't intended. Spike Atf wasn't meant to even be apart of Angel After The Fall, hence why Joss's name isn't on it. It was sputr of the moment from Brian. Dru's arc just came into the equation when Julliet Landau showed interest in writing a few issues herself. I know first night was always meant to be told in flash back order but it's the chnage in artists that bugged me. So the story over all came out a bit flooopy. However, flooopy doesn't always=bad. Angel After The Fall is a fantastic piece of work and apart from the out of order issues I LOVE it!

It certainly was not spur of the moment.

Gunn was out for the count at the end of ATF, and Aftermath shows him randomly driving around. Brian came in to explain the sudden change with issue 23. Oh. I guess that didn't bother me, since I knew he ended up in the hospital in issue 17. *** I agree that First Night should have been a spin off, it took us away from the main story for too long. I have no problem with the Dru story being created so recently. I don't know when else it could have been released. Maybe as a spin off being released right after Angel after the fall? But then again, it's not like Brian and Landau could have travelled back in time, could they? I think it would be nicer if we could get more of a "red thread"(a expression in Sweden, not sure if you guys have it too) through the main series, but as long as we get good comics, it's fine if the characters are all over the place, interacting more or less well. I've given up on trying to imagine any other comics than Angel after the fall as being "true" canon, so I don't really care if the comics that pop up are a bit "out of the blue" or "filler", as long as they're good. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't mind comics that fill in the blanks between the shows episodes. I might dislike Angel as a character, but I still want to know what happened to him during the summer beteen season 2 and 3 of Ats. I would love a Xander story written by Brian too, with a The Zeppo feel to it. Or a Wesley story. Man, I miss that guy. He was my favorite character on Angel for three seasons (season 2-4). Then came Spike and pushed him down to second.

First Night could have been broken up and placed into story in more of a Lost-like fashion for the sake of flow, but I don't see much of an issue with it as it is to be honest. I don't think it had to be 3 issues, I don't feel I got much from Gwen/random civilian.

I dunno, I get the feeling that if First Night had been used flashback-style in the story it would have been distracting to the immediate story. Better in a comic book to just have one big grouping of mini-flashbacks than try to incorporate them into the main story. Especially given the scope of the ATF story.

I just re-read all of ATF last night including Spike ATF ( I read it after the first night arc) and it was a completly coherent and engaging read, a really well paced and well put together story as a whole when you read them in that order. Well done to Brian and the whole team who put the story together a worthy tie up to Not Fade Away. Dont suppose Brian has any info on when this collected edition will be released

Sigh. Just when I got all of the individual HCs. Dude, I know exactly how you feel. I have all of them except for Angel: After the Fall - Volume Four. Darn you IDW! Darn you! *is broke*

I bought them when they first came out, I'm so happy that I did, I love the story/art to death and can very much deal with buy 2 sets of different hardcovers when the new one comes out. (Greatest comics of the greatest TV show after all. )

Shoot now I've wasted all my money on the hardcovers because I just know I'll want to buy this one too, and I don't get people getting so hung up about a few spelling errors- it's the story that matters

I hate when this happens: I get all the HCs, then something better shows up. xD
I'm gonna have to get this. I just love the story too much.
I hope it includes After the Fall 1-17, 23-25. For sure! It would also be nice to have Last Angel in Hell, 26-27, and Spike: After the Fall included, but that seems like a lot.

Shoot now I've wasted all my money on the hardcovers because I just know I'll want to buy this one too, and I don't get people getting so hung up about a few spelling errors- it's the story that matters The spelling mistakes are a problem because this isn't a fanfic, where your beta may or may not catch those kinds of things. This is a professionally-produced, supposedly-canonical continuation of the series, and those kinds of things shouldn't slip through. I honestly can't remember the last fanfic I read that couldn't even spell some of the characters' names correctly! (Wyndham-Pryce? Wyndam-Price?) But the real problem with those mistakes is that they're just indicative of sloppy editing. Throw in the editorial decision to take the lead art team off the main project for the entire middle chunk of the series so that they could work on a spinoff, and I really question what the folks in charge over at IDW are doing. Maybe the fans shouldn't have been so surprised that the creative people they tabbed for "Aftermath" weren't quite up to par. I've stopped reading S8 for reasons related to the story, but I think Dark Horse has done a much more professional job with the "Buffy" license than IDW has with "Angel". Starting with not soaking their fans to the tune of $100+ for 5 hardcovers of a 17-issue series. Although given the almost total lack of outrage over that, apparently IDW understands the fanbase a whole lot better than I do, 'cause I sure as hell don't get it...

The Hardcovers were nice, and the numbers seemed to have been governed largely "First Night". It never bothered me, they all came very nicely presented and with fun extras.
I do tend to agree with the rest though. As much as I love Spike: ATF, I grow more and more troubled by the decision to move Urru over to that and away from the main title. It would have been nice to have the art be consistant throughout.
The spelling errors do bother me. Surely a simple spell check should have taken place somewhen, and by the second printing there are no excuses. It's not going to ruin the series for me, but it does drag me out of the moment to notice bad grammer.

Well this is just me, but I never pay full price for the HC's, and no one else should either. $25 is way too much (especially when we get to 5th and 6th volumes), but you can get them for around $16 at Amazon, which is much more manageable. $16 is actually cheaper than some TPB's I've seen, when looking at a book store. Plus IDW is putting out TPB's, just at a much slower pace. I'm the type of fan though, where I want the best available release of my favorite comics, and that usually means HC's, so the Angel HC's are exactly what I want. For all of the series I love ( Y: The Last Man, The Walking Dead, Locke & Key, Runaways, etc.) I only buy the HC's, even if only one is released every year. It's that reason why I have only bought the single issues of Buffy, I want HC's, not TPB's when I can avoid them. I actually wish Dark Horse released more HC's, because I read their various Star Wars series as well, and they always get released in TPB, unfortunately.

Oh, believe me, I know exactly where you're coming from. I have a complete collection of all 7 novels of the "Dark Tower" series in HC that I've never even read--they're just there to sit on my shelf and look awesome. ;D When I wanna re-read the series, I have paperback copies for that. My problem with the way IDW has done things is that there was really no need to release a series this short as four HCs. Two should've been plenty, and since I think the series was more than half over before the first HC came out, they could've even waited and just released this one single large volume, rather than piece it out the way they did. Not only would it have been a lot cheaper to buy, but the whole idea of having collections like that is to have multiple issues inside one cover, so you can sit down and read the entire series (or at least a large chunk of it) without having to constantly put one volume down and pick up the next. Now like I said in an earlier post, IDW is a business, and they have the right to try to make as much money as they can, but I'm just really surprised that there hasn't been more criticism of them by the fans for the way they've done things, because I'm sorry, but 4 HCs of a series that wasn't even 20 issues long is excessive...

Do we know/have a deadline for this to come out? Nope, we haven't heard anything. It won't be out before June, at the earliest, since we have solicitations up through May. Also, since HC Vol. 6 and 7 are out in May and July, I bet we don't see the complete collection before September.

I myself haven't heard anything. I hope SPIKE:ATF is included, I think it fits with the story. I also hope Franco's cover to issue 1 of ANGEL:ATF is the cover.

I think Urru's #1 cover is a good choice; iconic for the series.

As much as I love Urru's #1 cover, I think Alex Garner's #1 cover (the one used for the first HC) is fancier.
